Holy Week - The Celebration

of the Lord’s

Paschal Mystery For all Christians Holy Week marks the highpoint of our faith

and our worship of God. It is in Holy Week that we commemorate the

time when Jesus Christ, Our Lord, spent his last days of his mission on

earth and brought it to completion with his Passion, Death and

Resurrection. This week ought to be a special time for prayer for all of

us. The liturgies of Passion (Palm) Sunday and the Sacred Triduum offer

us the opportunity to live more deeply the Paschal Mystery.

Passion (Palm) Sunday. Holy Week unfolds with the

Commemoration of the Lord’s Entrance into Jerusalem. The blessing

and procession of palm branches dates back to the 8th century. The palm

branches serve as a symbol of life, hope, and victory. What dominates

this celebration is the redemptive suffering of Jesus. He is the “Suffering

Servant of God (Is. 50:4-7). Jesus was exalted on the cross from his

obedience amid suffering unto death. Quickly, the liturgy moves from

the welcome of Jesus into Jerusalem to his rejection, trial, passion and

death.

Reflection. How do I understand that when I commit sin I turn

away from the love of Jesus for me? Yet, he offers me mercy, love and

forgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The Easter Triduum. The holiest three days of the Catholic Church’s liturgical worship begins on the evening of Holy Thursday and

ends on Easter Sunday. These are special days of prayer, fasting,

reflection, and meditation on the Paschal Mystery of Christ.

Holy Thursday. The Sacred Triduum opens with the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper which commemorates the Last Supper Jesus

had with his Apostles. There are three principal mysteries presented to us

in the liturgy: the institution of the Eucharist, the institution of the

priesthood, and the command of Jesus for his disciples to show brotherly

love to one another. This command of charity is exemplified by the

“Mandatum” or Washing of the Feet of selected men who represent the

12 Apostles. At the end of the liturgy the Eucharist is reposed in a

special place for adoration of the faithful.

Reflection. How thankful am I for my Catholic faith and my

privilege to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus in the Eucharist? Do I

recognize the Eucharist as “the Sacrament of Love” whereby I am called

to share Jesus love with my brothers and sisters in true charity? Do I

pray for all priests that they might be faithful in serving the People of

God in the spirit of Jesus?

Good Friday. This solemn day centers on Jesus’s passion, suffering, and death on the cross for us. The “Cross” becomes the sign of

redemption for all mankind.

Reflection. How do I embrace the cross of Jesus in my life and

the crosses I bear? Do I experience the strength and power of the Holy

Spirit in placing complete confidence and trust in Jesus’ sacrifice on

Calvary?

Holy Saturday &The Easter Vigil. On this holiest of all nights the Church keeps vigil awaiting the celebration of the Resurrection of

Christ. The celebration begins in darkness and ends with the light and

joy of Christ’s resurrection. This liturgy unfolds for us God’s plan of

salvation for all in Jesus. Jesus is light in our darkness (Easter candle)

who calls us to a rebirth in water (Baptism) and the Holy Spirit

(Confirmation) being redeemed by his body and blood (Eucharist) so that

we might have eternal life with him and the Father in heaven

(Resurrection).

Reflection. How do I bear the “Light of Christ” in my life.

How faithful am I do my Baptismal Promises? Do I realize that I have

been given new life by Jesus who rose on Easter and who offers me hope

and eternal love and peace?

An Invitation. To experience the richness and depth of our

Catholic Faith, please consider making every effort to participate in the

celebration of these sacred mysteries of our redemption this coming

week. This is a wonderful opportunity to renew as well as deepen our

faith in Jesus who offers us new hope and eternal life!

OUR LADY OF ANGELS

SCHOOL NEWS

Technology Class News:

Grades 6, 7 and 8th have been learning

how to use the Google for Education

suite of apps for school work. The apps work just like

Microsoft Office; which the students also learn how to

use—but don’t require installation and can be accessed

anywhere with an Internet Connection!

From Italian Sonnet Writing, to researching the

Olympics past and present, to blogging about

important topics using Weebly, our OLA students have

been very busy! They have been learning and doing a

lot, but the students; favorite is coding… While we

learn some basics of computer coding using Code.org

in class, we have a new lunch time club at school

called Code Rush. Code Rush is actually a national

competition to win STEM supplies for school by

competing for “perfect code” with other student teams

at schools and after school programs throughout the

United States. Students play the game Code Monkey,

which teaches the students Coffee Script. It’s similar to

Javascript, a coding language used to program web

applications. Kelly Orlando, PhD., also has graciously

volunteered as a co-team leader and helps students

alongside Technology Teacher, Miss Nancy Perone,

for once weekly team meetings. Many of the

challenges in Code Monkey feature cute, animated

animals and trying to get them from one point to

another while collecting a banana or two.

Students in a variety of grades have been busy

in the Makerspace/STEM Club. So far we’ve made

slime, coded robots with Ozobot, designed Herchey

kiss catapults and performed candy heart experiments.

Our next Makerspace will use Make Makey kits in a

creative project. Makey Makey is a codable invention

kit similar to snap circuits.

Our 5th thru 8th graders are beginning a new

after school adventure. We will be competing against

other schools in a STEM challenge. Students are

separated into groups and their task is to make an

environmentally friendly vehicle with K’Nex. This

vehicle must travel on a flat surface and must

overcome at least one obstacle. We have an

overwhelming amount of interest in this program and

supplies are a premium. If anyone has old K’Nex that

you are not using and would like to get rid of, we

would be glad to take them off your hands. You can

send them in with your child or drop them off at

school during regular hours. Thank you and WISH

US LUCK !
