PASTOR’S VIEWPOINT

I hate wars. While the snow keeps on coming and piling up here and there, I remember that the Word of God is like the rain and snow that come down and do what they do best and never return without having accomplished their creator’s given duties. Sitting in a quiet office of an empty church on a weekday evening, the thought that human persons can fabricate, at a great monetary cost, weapons and devices useless but to kill other human beings. How can such depravation ever enter the mind, the heart, the being put together in a womb, by love and for love.? Those weird thoughts find themselves in my own mind because of the Lenten spirituality that can be refreshing, encouraging, uplifting, even though the Cross seems to be in the way, yet just a certified passage to the fullness of Love. I suppose, looking back in time, that death became somewhat natural for me because of the experience of bereavement, the loss of loved ones. Being so fond of peoples’ lived stories, I am amazed at myself for not paying enough time studying history. I convinced myself that what was past remained there, somewhere, and the present was the only reality worthwhile trying to captivate and store it for no apparent reason. And just now, as darkness takes over outside the comfort of my evening zone, God is ever more present, yet no one around. He is present in the other, which includes the whole humanity. Somehow the baptized are shaped into a temple of God and so He is present, yet never alone within. No wonder these moments of truth just keep on coming, like the rain, like the snow, like the dark. If I stay long enough in the dark, light will show up for another day. Sometimes I wonder why I like hockey and baseball. No need to spend time wondering. Those were the only games my dad played. I even learned about ‘kick the can’ on my own, from my friends. There were my teachers of many facts of life I had to unlearn and relearn a few times as my canoe on river life hit rapids a few times. The experience of monastic life and a few days flipping cheese in a damp cellar or learning to heat steel to the right temperature so as to find the right tint before a mad dash in cold water, tempered just right to come out a genuine plow share. All that atmosphere and journey was needed to put a bit of a dent on a heart that would become soft enough to hear and see the God who make Himself present in the other…in or out of any liturgical season, whether Lent, or a plain ordinary evening cheering the Jets, or listening to a love story coming out of the mouth of an old timer whose past became a present for me. I hate wars. I love, Love and all her friends.

Newsletters were distributed last weekend. If you are on the email list and didn’t receive it, please contact me at

[email protected] and we can resolve the issue. CWL 2018 National Convention Fundraising raffle books are still available. If you are able to take a book (or two) to sell, that would be appreciated. Please call Janet Brunger at 204-837-3318, and she’ll get a book to you. Please return all tickets and money by April 10th, since we are required to turn all tickets and money at our Winnipeg Diocesan Convention on April 13th – 14th. We are asking those who took books to return the sold books and money by placing them in an envelope and putting them in the collection plate, and the office will return them to us. Many thanks for all your help with this! Registration Deadline for Winnipeg Diocesan Annual Convention is fast approaching! It will be held at St. Michael’s Parish in Gimli, on April 13th and 14th. I encourage everyone to come out to support the 2 resolutions being presented from our own Council! Please contact any member of our Executive for more info or to reserve your space. We’re requesting that anyone interested in praying for a youth and their family that is undergoing First Communion or Confirmation to call Christine Brezden at 204 832 6314 to receive a name of a child & their family.

The Scrutinies This weekend at the 9am Mass Kevin Heming, our newly elect, will experience the second of 3 Scrutinies. The scrutinies are for the unbaptized, those who will

receive the forgiveness of all their sins at baptism. The purpose of the scrutinies is to help the elect let go of anything negative holding them back, to help the elect see as God sees, what’s truly important. “The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal, all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out to strengthen, all that is upright, strong, and good. For the scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life.” —RCIA. Please continue to pray for Kevin and each other, as we walk together in this time of Lent.

Stations of the Cross Stations of the Cross at 6 pm Friday evenings during Lent.
