PASTOR’S VIEWPOINT

We have experienced the Octave of Christmas, liturgically speaking, but still, find ourselves in a time identified as ‘Christmas time’ till we arrive at the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord. One way to experience daily the spiritual dimension of the prayer life of the Church would be to consider it as ‘gift.’ It seems to me that having navigated those waters for many a year, I should be saturated with all the external dimensions of such celebrations. Yet I am unceasingly amazed at the newness discovered every year. Even to consider prayer itself as a gift to oneself is a new way for me to look at prayer. The risen Christ makes Himself present to us in so many different way, yet in personal prayer, there is room for an intimate conversation with the Creator and the whole experience is gratifying. Then there is the challenge that follows that particular encounter; that is to reveal in actions, words and whatever way imaginable, the fact that Christ is truly with all of us and we have been designated as disciple-friends to share His presence, to underline or point out His presence, wherever we have had the opportunity to grasp it ourselves, mostly during intimate prayer time, or having been part and active in a broader liturgical action with two or three, and sometimes many more, and filled with enthusiasm and strength to discreetly share the experience in our own personalized way of living life. For me, that is the meaning of Christmas; and so every day can become that very same experience. The ups and downs, the calm atmosphere and stormy struggle, are lived in tandem with Love and Mercy within the very experience itself. It is truly the beginning of a New Year, because every day is a new day, a gift of life and love, and we are carried securely as a lamb on the shoulders of the Good Shepherd. We will arrive together and the same place. The anticipation of that moment is a mystery in itself. Have a blessed sacred time, every day, all year round.

January 5, 2020: The Epiphany of the Lord

“We three Kings…” Sing for a minute, then ask yourself, “Who decided there were just three of them or that these wise pilgrims from the East were kings?” those are just two of the details tradition has added to Scripture for this feast. When we pay more attention to the Gospel than to our crèche sets, we’ll see that Matthew simply tells us that they were “Magi,” that is, astrologers or magicians, maybe Zoroastrian priests. They came from the East—literally, from the place of the rising sun, a reference to the territory we call Iran. —Mary M.McGlone of National Catholic Reporter (Sunday Resources)
