13th Sunday in Ordinary Time June 30, 2013

In today’s Gospel, the Samaritan villagers refuse to receive Jesus, going against sacred Middle Eastern traditions of hospi-tality to travelers. They did this because Jesus was going to Jerusalem, which they did not regard as the true center of worship. The disciples James and John were outraged! Refus-ing to practice hospitality was terribly wrong, and refusing Jesus, whom they knew to be the Messiah, was even worse. “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to con-sume them?” Most of us know the feeling! Sometimes people behave in an appalling way. Wouldn’t fire from heaven be a great solution to these people? But Jesus rebukes the disciples for even suggesting this. And this is where we see the wisdom and patience of God. God does not rush in and punish immediately. He gives people time to grow, and time to repent. In the spiritual warfare we are all engaged in, we cannot take shortcuts. Good will cer-tainly triumph over evil in the end. But quick vengeance, the “fire from heaven” option, is not the answer. Jesus and his disciples certainly suffered from the moral fail-ure by the villagers: perhaps they had nowhere to rest their heads that night. And we also suffer from the bad choices of others. But God does not want us to take revenge. The Lord Himself is our hope. We trust in Him to right wrongs. We know that, in the long run, God is not mocked. He will not allow lies to stand; sure, they may hurt us and in the worst cases (like Our Lord’s case) even kill us. But God sweeps the evil up, and miraculously transforms it into a means of grace! That’s God’s specialty. Good overcoming evil. We see this so clearly in the conspiracy of evil that resulted in Our Lord’s death. The good that came from the crucifixion so far out-weighed the evil that went into it. We can be a tiny part of the miracle of grace too, by refusing to take vengeance into our own hands. When people make choices that hurt us, like the Samaritan villagers in today’s Gospel, we can move on, trusting in God’s protection, sheltering under the shadow of his wings. We can even offer our sufferings for the salvation of souls--perhaps the souls of those exact people who have refused to help us. That way evil is doubly defeated and good doubly wins! Fire from heaven-no. Good overcoming evil-yes! Reflection by Dr. Sarah

Sarah

CHÚA NHẬT XIII THƯỜNG NIÊN THIRTNTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIM
