PASTOR’S VIEWPOINT

I received unexpected comments on last week’s viewpoint. There was also a ‘surprise’ element. Most comments came far from parish boundaries, but connections through friendships and relatives south of the border. The line attracting the most comments dealt with the report of dismay of some because I was to drive alone on a rather long journey. I received advice of all kinds; others memories that caught my mouth with a smile. The story of my grandfather’s last drive, driving so slow as to stop traffic. I like to think that I will rely on cruise control and keep the pace, or maybe at times, be ahead of the convoy. Then, on a day like today, I think I should leave sooner than later. Calls are coming in, and if I am not careful and say ‘yes’ too many times, I will book myself out of a trip I have been anticipating with hidden glee. If I have it my way, I will flee like a thief in the night. I have consulted the travel experts the way one examined his conscience and covered all the bases that I could remember to cover. The rest will be complete trust in God’s Providence. A few bounces, a click here and there, and a night followed by sunrise, then a lost weekend, and as pre-planned I will be back in the office writing a report on the anticipated trip that happened in spite of all the advice I could have taken into consideration and celebrate who I am. Somewhat a risky thought. The spirituality of the past week has been so uplifting, maybe like enjoying an ice cream cone some quiet evening I have been reading the same scriptures for many years, one day at a time and now I seem to be understanding some of it for the first time. God works in ways that can baffle a clown. Maybe I should learn a lesson from the ice cream cone comparison. There is always more to come. God’s love is quite like that. Enjoy it thoroughly, driving East or West, knowing that there always will be some more and it is sure to be good. Sweet dreams and a prayerful awakening to all of you.
