STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 15 / REFLEXIÓN DE LA COR-RESPONSABILIDAD PARA LA SEMANA DEL 15 DE MAYToday is the Solemnity of Pentecost. One of the most ancient feasts of the Church, Pentecost is mentioned and explained in both the Acts of the Apostles and in St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians. The name comes quite simply from the Greek word, Pentekoste, which meant “the 50th day” as Pentecost is 50 days after Easter Sunday.Pentecost is often called the “birthday of the Church” as it was on this day — with the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and about 120 followers of Christ, including our Blessed Mother Mary and other men and women — that Christ’s mission on earth is completed.However, that mission continues with us. We, too, have received the power of the Holy Spirit through Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucha-rist, and other sacraments. It is this Holy Spirit that allows us to be the Lord’s Disciples actively working in today’s Church and today’s society. Nevertheless, we must accept and recognize that fact.In a homily given on Pentecost Sunday, 20 years ago Pope St. John Paul II said, “In the Acts of the Apostles, St. Luke describes the ex-traordinary manifestation of the Holy Spirit. This divine gift is light and power, light to proclaim the Gospel truth and power to infuse each of us with the courage of witnessing to the faith.” Living out this call is the essence of stewardship. I went to a reception for a Confirmation candidate a couple of weeks ago. One of the guests asked him if felt anything when the bishop put on the oil. It kind of caught him off guard and it seemed like he wanted to say yes, but was honest and said no. It also seemed like he wanted to feel something and was disappointed that
he didn’t. I assured him that it was okay and the Holy Spirit is not a feeling, but is real and will be there when you need Him.I reflected later on this, in scripture the Spirit is like fire and wind and moves and causes things to happen. I’ve been to lots of Confirmations and barely a movement of air. Occasionally a teen will mention feeling something, but not doors rattling and tongues of fire. Was the Holy Spirit not there? The Spirit is always there, but I think we clamp it down. The Spirit needs to be free. We have rehearsals and scripts and rules. The kids are thinking more about when to stand and what to say and not mess up, rather than letting the Spirit flow.From time to time I’ve gone to healing Masses, where we encourage the Spirit to flow. We are praying over people and people are being slain in the Spirit and changes are happening. Time seems suspended and we finish three hours after we started and barely notice. The Spirit was set free. I think the Spirit needs more freedom to work. In most of our settings it’s up to the individual person to completely open them-selves to the Spirit and set it free. En cierto modo lo agarre desprevenido y parecía como si quisiera decir que sí, pero fue honesto y dijo que no. También parecía como si quisiera sentir algo y estaba decepcionado de que no lo hizo. Le aseguré que estaba bien y el Espíritu Santo no es un sentimiento, pero es real y estará ahí cuando se le necesita.Reflexioné después de esto, en las escrituras del Espíritu es como el fuego y el viento, se mueve y hace que las cosas sucedan. He estado en un montón de confirmaciones y apenas hay un movimiento de aire. De vez en cuando un adolescente menciona sentir algo, pero no puertas traqueteando y lenguas de fuego. El Espíritu Santo no existe? El Espíritu siempre está ahí, pero creo que atrapamos. El Espíritu tiene que ser libre. Tenemos ensayos y guiones y reglas. Los niños están pensando más en el momento de ponerse de pie y qué decir y no meter la pata, en lugar de dejar que el Espíritu fluja.De vez en cuando me he ido a las misas de sanación, en el que fo-mentan que el espíritu fluya. Join others, regardless of skill level to knit, crochet or sew. Together we can create beautiful prayer shawls for those who need to feel the love of Christ wrapped around them. Our mission is to provide hope, comfort and healing to those who most need a reminder of God’s love for them through the work of our human hands and the prayers in our hearts. At these meetings, we share the stories of the people who have received shawls, discuss successes and challenges with our current projects and enjoy snacks and refreshments as we support and rejoice with one another in our journey. It serves as one of the most important annual fundraisers for the San Clemente Pregnancy Resource Center. The proceeds from previ-ous years helped to purchase a mobile ultrasound unit which will be on display at the dinner. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this year’s event will be allocated to cover the ongoing annual maintenance costs to keep this mobile unit in operation and expand its services to the local community.
