Have you ever been out and about and gotten truly lost? I mean really and truly lost, such that you didn’t know where you were or where you would wind up if you kept on going in the direction that you are headed. It happened to me once. In my younger days, and over a period of about 10 ten years or so, I hiked up all of the peaks 4000 feet high or taller in New Hampshire. There are 48 of them. Most of them I hiked with someone – which is really the safer way to do it; but a couple of those peaked I bagged on my own. Now this was in the day when there were no cell phones to call for assistance and no GPS’s around to tell you where you were. I had my trusty trail map. Wasn’t smart enough to carry a compass. And all I had to call for assistance was a whistle, which I did make sure that I had with me. But on one of my treks I hiked up the mountain, and after checking it off my list looked around, and wouldn’t you know it, there were a few trails around leading off the summit. Which was the one I hiked up. Well, I thought I knew the answer, but about an hour into the trek down I came across a tree that had fallen over the trail and that I would have to climb over. Well, climbing over the tree was no problem. The problem was I was absolutely sure that I had not climbed over this tree on the way up. To say the least, I was not a happy camper. I had no idea what trail I was on. I did not know where it would lead, but I was pretty sure that I would not find my car waiting for me at the end of the trail. Nor did I know how long it would take to get down, and it was already somewhat late in the day. What if it turned dark? I was not very happy. And I was getting increas-ingly concerned. A little adventure was one thing, being lost was quite another. Well to make a long story short, I got to the end of the trail before dusk, and I found a pay phone (remember those?) and called the police who, fortunately, had had a good deal of experience with lost hikers, and they picked me up and brought me to my car. All’s well that ends well. When people take a journey nowadays, they are likely to rely more on their GPS than on maps. With maps, we studied the route. We made note of landmarks we would pass along the way. We could picture the route before us. With a GPS at our beck and call, a lot of thinking and planning does not go into the process. We don’t have to picture our destination before us, because the gal or guy on the GPS will announce to us that we have arrived. Without a companion in the car, that means a lot of looking down at a device while on route. Not really the best plan. Relying solely on our GPS with little or no preparation tells us little about our jour-ney or our destination. Jesus invites His disciples to take a journey. To follow Him where He is going. To the Father’s house. A journey that will lead them to Him. Christ declares Himself to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Not one among many alternatives. He describes Himself as the gate to the sheepfold. And all sheep and shepherds are called to enter through this one gate. Christ is more than a roadmap to the Father. Christ is not only the way, but the destination. He is a sacrament of the Fa-ther. Through His Incarnation, Jesus makes the Father visible to us in His own actions and teaching. He Himself gives us the life of the Father through the gift of the Holy Spirit, which proceeds from both the Father and the Son, and is the Love that they share. When we imitate the pattern that Christ sets out for us, most importantly by loving the Father by seeking always to do His will and by loving others as He has loved us, then we come to share in His divinity, which is our ultimate destination. Jesus is the true way to eternal life. The journey He invites us to take with Him is not a commute. It does not shuttle us between the ordinary and the mundane and the worldly. It is a genuine spiritual journey to the Father. And at the end of a true jour-ney we are never quite the same as we are at the beginning, both because of where we’ve been and where we’ve come to. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we meet the Truth along the Way, and it turns us 180° around from where we might ordinarily have gone on our own. And our destination is eternal Life.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

We ask that you prayerfully consider using online giving—especially if you currently manage your bills or banking online. For more information about ParishSOFT Giving, please visit the church website at www.olmv.net, or email Father David your ques-tions at [email protected].
