St. Vincent de Paul Society

Each year our parish Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society joins with other Conferences in the Dio-cese of Metuchen to provide First Communion dresses and suits to those families who cannot afford to pur-

chase them. If you have a gently used dress or suit that you would like to donate, please contact the Parish Office. Monetary donations are also acceptable. Thank you.

Donations may be left in the parish office.

It is customary following a synod of Bishops, for the Holy Father to issue a post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation. An Apostolic Exhortation is a magisterial document (i.e., one speaking with the authority of the Magisterium of the Church). It is third in importance, coming behind an Apostolic Constitution and an Encyclical. As an exhortation, it encourages the implementa-tion of certain lessons learned at the synod. In the words of one canon lawyer, “The Synod of Bishops is not binding. It only gives advice. The Pope alone decides what to do with it.” On February 2, Pope Francis issued an Apostolic Exhortation called Querida Amazonia. In spite of a great deal of hype in the press prior to its issuance, the Holy Father did not implement some of the innovations that had been discussed during the Amazon Synod, including the ordi-nation of married priests and the ordination of women to the diaconate. Instead, Pope Francis stressed the right of the peoples of the Amazon to hear the Gospel, and above all the kerygma, the principal proclamation (n. 64). “Without that impassioned proclamation, every ecclesiastical structure would become just another NGO [non-governmental organization] and we would not follow the command given us by Christ: ‘Go in-to the whole world and preach the Gospel to the whole creation (Mk 16:15).’” “Any project for growth in the Christian life needs to be centered continually on this message. …” (n. 65). Pope Francis spoke approvingly of the role of culture (n. 67). He spoke of the importance of a relationship with Jesus Christ for all peoples (n. 74) the importance of the Eucharist, noting that the Eucharist “joins heaven and earth; it permeates and penetrates all creation.” (n. 82). Pope Francis also stressed the importance of the priesthood: “[O]nly the priest can say: ‘This is my body.’ There are other words, too, that he [the priest] alone can speak: ‘I absolve you from your sins.’ Because sacramental forgiveness is at the service of a worthy celebra-tion of the Eucharist (emphasis added). These two sacraments lie at the heart of the priest’s exclusive identity” (n. 88). Accordingly, the Pope stressed the need for all bishops to promote prayer for priestly vocations. At the same time, the Holy Father noted the importance of vari-ous kinds of lay service (nn. 93-94) and “the strength and gift of women.” (nn. 99-103).

Finally, Pope Francis reiterated the Church’s firm belief “in Jesus as the sole Redeemer of the world.” (n. 107)

LENTEN PROGRAMS AND DEVOTIONS

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Fridays at 7:00 P.M.

During Lent, our parishioners are invited to attend Bible Study, Stations of the Cross on Fridays, our Lenten Novena on Monday evenings and our An-nual Lenten Penance Service on March 29, 2020. Certainly it is recommended that we try to at-tend Mass not only on the weekend, but also once or twice during the week as we think about our relation-ship with the Lord.

Baby Shower to Benefit the Pregnancy Aid Center: March 21-22.

Once again one of our Lenten gestures of charity will be the annual baby shower. Volunteers at the Pregnancy Aid Center stress the need for basic items such as undies, receiving blankets, diaper bags, nighties and such items as your imagina-

tion and good practical sense might suggest. But noth-ing fancy. The Center also welcomes gift cards so the mothers can purchase what they need. This "shower" differs from the typical baby shower in that the gifts should be unwrapped . Please place donations in the Blessed Mother Chapel the weekend of March 21– 22.

SPECIAL ITEMS NEEDED FOR THE BABY SHOWER - baby bottles (4 oz.), crib sheets, diaper

bags, infant clothes (0-12 months) and wipes.
