Waiting in Joyful Hope for the Coming of Our Savior

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church ~1~

What are the basic requirements of being a practicing Catholic? The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives five precepts (CCC 2041-2043) thay do not exhaust the Christian life but they are “meant to guarantee to the faithful the very necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor.” 1) “You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor.” This “requires the faithful to sanctify the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord as well as the principal liturgical feasts honoring the mysteries of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and

the saints; in the first place, by participating in the Eucharistic celebration, in which the Christian community is gathered, and by resting from those works and activities which could impede such a sanctification of these days.” (CCC 2042)

Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation are not suggestions or optional. Unless you have a real-

ly good reason, all Catholics need to be there. Also notice the “rest from servile labor” – they are supposed to be days of rest. 2) “You shall confess your sins at least once a year.”

This “ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of Penance, which contin-ues Baptism’s work of conversion and forgiveness.” (CCC 2042)

Catholics are not supposed to receive the Eucharist in a state of mortal sin, and the Sacrament of Pen-ance is the means by which a person can be cleansed of mortal sin. Since all are required to receive the

Eucharist at least once a year (see precept 3), and since the Church is realistic about human sin, Confession is required at least once a year. But that’s just the bare minimum. So that you can receive the Eucharist more often than once a year,

and for the salvation of your soul, most Catholics probably need to be going to Confession with some sort of regularity throughout the year.

During Advent, to help meet this precept, Confessions are being offered in the Church on Monday nights from 6:00 to 6:45. Additionally we have the communal Penance celebration on Sunday, December 11 at 2pm at Immaculate Conception. 3) “You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season.”

This “guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord’s Body and Blood in connection with the Pas-chal feasts, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy.” (CCC 2042)

The Eucharist is one of the main ways God has given to us to apply the grace of the Gospel to our lives. As with Confession, receiving the Eucharist once a year is a bare minimum. A normal practicing Catholic should be receiving the Eucharist far more than that. 4) “You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church.”

This “ensures the times of ascesis (abstinence) and penance which prepare us for the liturgical feasts and help us acquire mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart.” (CCC 2043)

Fasting is a normal part of the Christian life because it helps us to grow in virtue. The Church has pre-scribed minimal fasting during certain parts of the liturgical year. None of it is very difficult, but that’s because it’s a bare minimum requirement. All Christians can and should voluntarily do more difficult and more frequent fasts. 5) “You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church.”

This “means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability.” (CCC 2043)

Because of our human weakness, the Church made providing financial support an obligation of Church

law. Note that the Church doesn’t prescribe a certain amount or percentage, but only says that people give “each according to his own ability.” Each Catholic should prayerfully consider what they can do to support the Church. But they should know that not helping in any way (when one has the ability to do so) isn’t an option.

Advent blessings and be encouraged, we are all journeying with you. I pray our Lord richly blesses you. Always remember that I love you, there is no way I will ever love you less, and I will continue to pray for you every day. ~ Fr. Behrend

As we light our advent candle Light of the world shine on us. As we prepare for Christmas time Light of the world shine on us.

During the Advent Season, students at Mater Dei will start each school week with a mini-prayer service and will reflect on the meaning of each week’s can-

dle. They will then write a response to a question about that week’s candle. Responses will be posted on the large bulletin board in PC Hallway. Additionally, all homerooms have an advent calendar with daily reflections and activities and students in grades 3-8 are participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Thank you for your continued generosity and most especially for your donations during the We Give Catholic campaign.

STEM Designation from the State of Ohio Mater Dei Academy is proud to announce that we are pursuing STEM designation from the State of Ohio.

STEM schools place an emphasis on critical thinking, cooperation, collaboration, creativity and adding opportunities for students to solve authentic problems. Problem solving and design challenges are a great way to engage students and use skills across disciplines to create solutions to real world problems.

In essence, STEM is just good teaching; providing our students the opportunities to grow in an environment that will promote ownership of learning and risk-taking. Our students will also simultaneously grow in our core moral values as we explore our place as citizens of a global community. In our school, STEM would become STREAM as we would naturally integrate Art and Religion into our daily lessons.

On December 6th we invite you to share in the joy of Christmas at our Christmas per-formance featuring our 4th and 5th graders as well as the MDA band. The performance is at 7pm.

May peace, joy, hope, and love fill your home and heart, Loretta Pilla, Principal

PREPARE THE WAY Saint John the Baptist ap-pears on the scene today as Advent enters its second week. The mysterious consumer of locusts and wild honey, John echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah as he calls for repentance in the face of the nearness of the kingdom of heaven. The rhythms of the Christian life are often confounding. Each year we meet the Baptist and hear his calls for repentance. Each year we see him pointing to the one who is coming after him, the Lord Jesus. Yet each year the words and actions of John the Baptist echo anew in our hearts, because we have fallen into old sinful traps again and again. Advent gives us the opportunity once again to turn away from our sinful ways and embrace the gospel way of life. John the Baptist invites us to prepare the way for the Lord, in whom we place our hope. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. WEEKLY READINGS

The earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the LORD, as water covers the sea. —Isaiah 11:9

Lake Life Teen Week of December 4th

Weekly Prayer Intention

This week we pray: for the Church, for its leaders and all its people, for those who seek wisdom, understanding, counsel, and strength. For those who live in places of discord and oppression, for those who are heavily burdened and persecuted for their faith. For bold prophets and humble

listeners, for those whose lives witness the Gospel of Jesus. For young people and for children, for caring adults in whose faces they can see the face of

God. And for our community, centered in one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and for those who live humbly and await the Lord’s coming.

Scripture Reflection Hope is demanding. Hope demands action. Hope is not wishing for a fantasy

to come true hope is something more powerful, more profound than any wish could ever be. Hope calls for an adjustment of our lives so we can do

something about the future. St. John the Baptist came to a people who merely wished that the Messiah might come someday to make everything

perfect, but weren’t doing anything about it. He taught them to change their lives and their perspectives. He told them to repent and reform. He told them that they could not be satisfied with doing nothing, just resting on

their heritage. He told them to transform their lives, and prepare the world for the Messiah. In doing this, he transformed their wishing into hoping. Advent is much more than making believe that Jesus us going to be born again in Bethlehem. Advent is the season of taking action so that we can

attain our hope. Our hope is not just that we all have a pleasant or even a spiritual Christmas. Our hope is far deeper than that. Our hope is that we will join Jesus Christ in the transformation of the world when He comes at

the end of time. To attain this hope, we have to prepare for Christ’s presence right now. Hope demands that kind of action.
