Liturgical Year C

First Reading

Sir 3:17-18, 20, 28-29

Gospel

Lk 14:1, 7-14

For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.

Reflections of Today’s Gospel

Meals played an important role in the society in which Jesus lived. More than a time for sharing nourishment, they were a time to share ideas and to model different aspects of social rela-tionships. In Luke's Gospel, the places that a person ate (at the home of a tax collector, 5:29), the people with whom a person ate (sinners, 5:30), whether a person washed before eating (11:38), and, as is the case here, the place that a person sits while eating are all im-portant. The narrator says Jesus tells a parable, but it is really wise advice to both guests and hosts about finding true happiness at the heavenly banquet.

Jesus warns guests to wait before taking their places at the table lest they be asked to move if someone more important arrives. This is more than just a lesson about dinner etiquette. It is advice on how to find your true place in the Kingdom of God. Jesus advises hosts not to in-vite people who would be expected to repay them to dinner but to invite those who could not repay: the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. This is where real blessings can be found.

In these sayings, Luke gives us not only advice on how to ap-proach the end times but also on how to live according to Jesus' vision of a good society. Luke's Gospel also advises us how the Church must be part of bringing about this society. It is yet an-other example in Luke's Gospel of the reversal the kingdom brings about.

Parish Vocation Support Club

There are many ways that you can support the awareness, development, and increase in vocations to priesthood, consecrated life, and marriage within our parish. Here are some of the various ways:

1. Pray the Prayer for Vocations daily. You can do this individually, as a family, or as a parish community. 2. Participate in your Parishes Vocation Cross program. 3. Pray a rosary daily together as a family at dinnertime or bedtime, or individually; for vocations. 4. Write letters to the seminarians, remembering that they are still in the process of discerning whether

God is calling them to the priesthood. 5. Contribute to the Seminarian Collection Fund which provides the support our seminarians need and

helps us cultivate a culture for vocations. 6. Visit the Blessed Sacrament Chapel to pray for vocations. 7. Invite a priest, seminarian, or consecrated person to dinner and ask them about their vocation. 8. Celebrate the feasts of the saints. 9. Read about the lives of the saints and talk about them together as a family. 10. Set an example for one another of prayer and holiness, following God's call. Discuss the importance

of and how to follow God's call every day. 11. Pray for the priests and consecrated persons that you know, and for those who are discerning their

vocation. 12. Live a life of service to others. 13. Encourage those you know who might be called to priesthood

or consecrated life to consider such a vocation. 14. “Adopt” a retired priest or consecrated person – send them

cards or letters, invite them to dinner. 15. As parents, be a witness to your children, encourage them to

consider a vocation to priesthood or consecrated life. 16. Consider whether God might be calling you to the priesthood

or consecrated life. https://www.catholicnh.org/worship-and-sacraments/vocations/priesthood/support/16ways/

Holy See-Vietnam Joint Working Group con-cludes talks

A two-day meeting of the Vietnam-Holy See Working Group concluded in the Vatican on Thursday. The Group on Friday issued a joint statement regarding the issues discussed.

The Viet Nam-Holy See Working Group that met in the Vatican, August 21-22, issued a joint statement on Fri-day about the issues discussed, including relations between the two states, the status

and issues regarding the Catholic Church in the south-east Asian nation and setting up of the Office of the Resident Papal Representative in Vietnam. The meeting was co-chaired by Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, To Anh Dung, who headed his country’s dele-gation, and Vatican Under-Secretary for Relations with States, Mgr. Antoine Camilleri, the head of the Holy See delegation.

Please find below the text of the joint press communique: The two delegations had in-depth discussions on Vietnam-Holy See relations, including on matters related to the Cath-olic Church in Viet Nam. The two sides noted with satisfac-tion the positive developments in the bilateral relations in recent years, especially the frequent contacts between the two sides following the seventh Meeting of the Viet Nam – Holy See Joint Working Group held in Ha Noi in December 2018 and the consultations between the Viet Nam Inter-agency Working Group and Archbishop Marek Zalewski, the Non-resident Papal Representative to Viet Nam.

The Vietnamese delegation reiterated that the State of Vi-etnam has been increasingly improving the execution of the consistent policy of respecting and ensuring freedom of belief and religion, creating a conducive environment for the activ-ities and development of the Catholic community in Viet Nam. The Holy See expressed its appreciation for the assis-tance of the State to the Catholic Church, and reaffirmed the desire of the Catholic faithful to live up to their vocation to be good Catholics and good citizens in order to contribute validly to the development and well-being of Vietnam, in fi-delity to the teaching of the Church and with due respect to the applicable laws of the country.

The two delegations also discussed issues related to the ec-clesial situation in Viet Nam. They reached agreement on ways to promote further the relations between Viet Nam and the Holy See in the immediate future and, in particular, on the main principles underlying the Regulations on the status of the Resident Papal Representative and the Office of the Resident Papal Representative in Viet Nam, in view of the setting up of the Office at the earliest possible date.

The two sides also expressed their commitment to continuing dialogue based on trust and respect for the mutually agreed principles governing the bilateral relations. They under-scored the importance of further promoting contacts, includ-ing at high levels, between the two sides.

On the occasion of the visit to the Vatican, the Vietnamese del-egation was granted an Audience with His Holiness Pope Fran-cis, and paid courtesy calls on the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and the Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher. These meetings were held in a cordial atmosphere of goodwill and mutual respect.

St Teresa Of Calcutta - Sept 5 Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the tiny woman recognized throughout the world for her work among the poorest of the poor, was beatified October 19, 2003. Among those present were hun-dreds of Missionaries of Charity, the order she founded in 1950, as a dioce-san religious community. Born to Albanian parents in what is now Skopje, Macedonia, Gonxha (Agnes) Bojaxhiu was the youngest of the three children who survived. During her years in public school, Agnes participated in a Catholic sodality and showed a strong interest in the foreign missions.

At age 18, she entered the Loreto Sisters of Dublin. It was 1928 when she said goodbye to her mother for the final time and made her way to a new land and a new life. The following year she was sent to the Loreto novitiate in Darjeeling, India. There she chose the name Teresa and prepared for a life of service. She was as-signed to a high school for girls in Calcutta, where she taught history and geography to the daughters of the wealthy. But she could not escape the realities around her—the poverty, the suffer-ing, the overwhelming numbers of destitute people.

For the next four decades, Mother Teresa worked tirelessly on behalf of the poor. Her love knew no bounds. Nor did her energy, as she crisscrossed the globe pleading for support and inviting others to see the face of Jesus in the poorest of the poor. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. On September 5, 1997,

God called her home. Blessed Teresa was canonized by Pope Francis on September 4, 2016.
