A PRAYER IN TIME OF PANDEMIC

O God, whose Only Begotten Son bore the weight of human suffering for our salvation, hear the prayers of your Church for our sick brothers and sisters and deliver us from this time of trial. Open our ears and our hearts to the voice of your Son: Be not afraid, for I am with you always. Bless all doctors and nurses, researchers and public servants; give us the wis-dom to do what is right and the faith to endure this hour, that we might gather once again to praise your name in the heart of your Church, delivered from all distress and confi-dent in your mercy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR ST. PADRE PIO OF PIETRELCINA BY POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II

“Teach us, we pray, humility of heart, so that we may be counted among the little ones of the Gospel to whom the Father promised to reveal the mysteries of His Kingdom. Help us to pray without ceasing, certain that God knows what we need even before we ask Him. Obtain for us the eyes of faith that will help us recognize in the poor and suf-fering, the very face of Jesus. Sustain us in the hour of trou-ble and trial and, if we fall, let us experience the joy of the sacrament of forgiveness. Grant us your tender devotion to Mary, mother of Jesus and our Mother. Accompany us on our earthly pilgrimage toward the blessed Homeland, where we too, hope to arrive to contemplate forever the Glory of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

We had our first Miraculous Medal Novena celebration this past Tuesday and we had an excellent crowd. Our second celebration is this coming Tuesday, Septem-ber 8th at 7:00 pm. Our guest preacher will be Mon-signor Robert K. Johnson, pastor of Holy Family and Saint Stephen Parishes.

Monday is Labor Day. It’s hard to believe we are into September already. We will install the officers of the Mount Carmel Council- Knights of Columbus at the 10:30 Mass on Sunday, September 13th. The follow-ing Sunday, September 20th , we will celebrate First Communion that had to be rescheduled from last May due to covid-19 issues. Joan is organizing our reli-gious education program and she will be in communi-cation with the parents of school age children. We will be utilizing somewhat of a hybrid program with face-to-face classes and the use of Zoom to provide class virtually. We have installed internet in the church that will allow us to broadcast events from the church. So much will be happening so you need to stay tuned, and more importantly, join us.

The church building continues to be sanitized after every Mass and event, thanks to Glen MacGregor and our custodian Howard Green. Thank you for practicing social distancing, wearing face masks and purifying your hands upon entering the church. If you forgot you face mask, we have extras on the table in the vesti-bule.

Thank you for your continuing generosity to our par-ish. Your contributions allow us to keep operating.

Finally, I want to commend to your prayers the soul of Joseph Bellino, a long time member of our parish, who passed away on Friday, August 28th. Joe was part of the team that organized the Capital Campaign in 2007 in an attempt to save Our Lady of Mount Car-mel Church. More recently, he served as Chair of our Parish Property Committee. I want to thank him for his dedication to our parish. May his noble soul rest in peace. Our condolences to his family.

Summer blessings!

Monsignor Pedone

Parish PRAYER FOR PARISH SPIRITUAL RENEWAL

Lord God, You love us with an everlasting love, and You choose us to share Your love with others. We ask that You rekindle in our hearts a new spirit of faith, of prayer and of reconciliation. Inspire us to search out and find ways of bringing one another closer to You. We pray for all who form our parish

community, that we remain faithful to Your teaching, that we remain steadfast in our prayer, both personal and communal, that together with You and the Holy Spirit, our parish may be renewed and transformed. All this we ask in the name of Jesus and through the

power of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Please cut out and pray daily.

The Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 6, 2020

Have an awesome day, and know that someone has thought about you.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS We are still waiting for any decisions by the diocese regarding our options for scheduling Religious Edu-cation classes. We will keep everyone informed as soon as we have more information. At this time we have plans in place for both remote learning and face to face teaching. Once we have more information from the diocese we will have a Zoom meeting in September inviting par-ents, students, and guardians who are interested to join us in discussing the options that are available and work best for everyone. First Penance for the 2020 class will be on Saturday, September 19 at 8:30 a.m. First Communion for the 2020 class will be on Sun-day, September 20 at 10:30 a.m. We are thinking of hosting a weekly Bible Study via Zoom for all those interested. If you are interested please email Joan D’Argenis at [email protected] or call Lisa at 508-753-5001.

Keep in mind:

While we are happy to be back in the Church for Mass, there are many who are still choosing to wait before coming back. It is comforting to know that there are several stations on television where we can find a con-nection to our faith:

SPECTRUM/CHARTER: Channel 193 in Worcester which televises from St. Paul’s Cathedral, EWTN (channel 18), CATHOLIC TELEVISION (channel 101 from Boston)

All have wonderful programs and can also be accessed via the internet: Mass, the Rosary, as well as other in-teresting programs. Try them. NOTE: If you do not have Spectrum/Charter as your cable pro-vider, call your provider and ask what channels televise EWTN and CATHOLIC TELEVISION.

QUESTIONS ABOUT HOMESCHOOLING?

Given the closure of some our Catholic schools, and the uncertainty of what public schools may look like come September, you may be considering home-schooling for the first time. When I first considered homeschooling, I was blessed with others explaining to me all the different options available. Perhaps you don’t know anyone who homeschools. Feel free to call me, Alessandra, at 508-754-4588, to ask questions; I’d be happy to speak with you. It’s certainly doable, and no, you don’t have to come from a teaching back-ground. Just a willing heart and love of your unique child! You can also visit https://sites.google.com/view/homeschooling-in-worcester-ma/home

Are you interested?

If you are interested in the Knights of Co-lumbus at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and Our lady of Loreto Parish, please visit the parish website and click on the link to the Knights of Columbus, where you can watch a 5 minute video presentation by one of its members. Thank You, Rick Annunziata

GOLDEN YEARS CLUB

We are trying to see if there would be in interest in cur-rent members of the Mount Carmel Golden Years Club resuming their Tuesdays meetings. There would be, of course, some changes so that we could meet and still remain safe and follow the guidelines regarding social distancing and the wearing of masks and or face cov-erings. If you would be interested please contact June Carelli at 508-752-0337 or Leona Mazzamaurro at 508-852-4375.

SEASON OF CREATION—Sept. 1– Oct. 4

The Season of Creation spans five weeks between the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation (September 1) and the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4). This “time for creation” offers, in the words of Pope Francis, “individual believers and com-munities a fitting opportunity to reaffirm their personal vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which he has entrusted to our care, and to implore his help for the protection of creation as well as his pardon for the sins committed against the world in which we live."

Through a recent flocknote, you can access several web-sites concerning this Season of Creation, or simply search for Season of Creation.

The Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 6, 2020

Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow—a day at a time.

Sunday, Sep 06, 2020 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Strive for rugged interdependence

Individualism—rugged or otherwise—has it perks. But what’s more rugged and infinitely more fruitful is the spirit of communal inter-dependence. Jesus tells us not merely that there’s safety in numbers, but that Christianity itself is in the balance. A loner Christian simply can’t be found. Even a hermit lives in communion with the greater church. Our gathering hymn at the start of each Mass tells us why we come together, whether in person or online: because Jesus is present in the love that passes between us. Practice your Christianity in all of your daily contacts.

TODAY'S READINGS: Ezekiel 33:7-9; Romans 13:8-10; Matthew 18:15-20 (127). “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

Monday, Sep 07, 2020 Stand for work This year’s Labor Day is a difficult one for our country, with so many workers unemployed, underemployed, or employed in high-risk settings as a result of the pandemic. In these tough times, let’s remember the church’s teachings on the dignity of work and workers. The U.S. bishops have stated, “All people have the right to economic initiative, to productive work, to just wages and ben-efits, to decent working conditions, as well as to organize and join unions or other associations.” Stand up for workers’ rights today and every day.

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Corinthians 5:1-8; Luke 6:6-11 (437). “Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?”

Tuesday, Sep 08, 2020 FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Find hope in Mary One of the most beautiful prayers of the Catholic Church, “The Litany of Loreto” dates back to the 1500s and uses poetic language to proclaim the many titles and symbols of Mary. One of those symbols—Mary as Morning Star—describes Our Lady’s relationship to Jesus and her role in salvation history. Just as Earth’s morning star, Venus, emits the day’s first light ahead of the dawning of the sun, so too does the birth of Mary provide a glimmer of hope ahead of the birth of her son. Turn to Mary today with anything you might feel hopeless about.

TODAY'S READINGS: Micah 5:1-4a or Romans 8:28-30; Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23 (636). “Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.”

Wednesday, Sep 09, 2020 MEMORIAL OF PETER CLAVER, PRIEST Care about body and soul Saint Peter Claver (1581-1654) was a Spanish Jesuit missionary to the Americas who preached the Good News by first caring for the physical needs of the people. When slave ships docked in the port city of Cartagena, Colombia, Claver came with food and medicines to care for the African people who survived the journey, because he believed that, “We must speak to them with our hands before we speak to them with our lips.” In four decades in Colombia, he baptized more than 300,000 people, proof perhaps that compassion borne of faith is the best means of evangelization. May compassion for everyone be the means of our own saint-hood.

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Corinthians 7:25-31; Luke 6:20-26 (439). “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude and insult you.”

Thursday, Sep 10, 2020 Bible banter While we may quote the Bible now and then, Catholics in general are less likely to quote scripture than many Protestants, not be-cause we don’t value scripture but because Catholics rely on tradition and teaching alongside scripture. Individual Bible quotes tend to be emphasized less. Most believers will spend a lifetime coming to understand and embrace their faith deeply. Next time you read the Bible, see it as one more step on the journey to God.

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Corinthians 8:1b-7, 11-13; Luke 6:27-38 (440). “Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you.”

Friday, Sep 11, 2020 What would Jesus do? Religion has too often been weaponized. Criticism and even attacks on others are justified in the name of “God.” Many a “holy” war has been fought with little understanding of a God who can be expressed as compassion, mercy, and love in many and varied ways across religious traditions. As Christians, we are called to measure our words and actions by the gospel of Jesus the Christ. This standard should guide our choices, whether confronting injustice, voting for political leadership, or encountering a stranger. As we pause to remember the victims of 9/11 and other terrorist acts today, let’s pledge to resist all efforts to weaponize religion. How can love incarnate your entire being?

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22b-27; Luke 6:39-42 (441). “Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?”

Saturday, Sep 12, 2020 MEMORIAL OF THE MOST HOLY NAME OF MARY Your litany of personal saints Tony in West Side Story wasn’t the first to sing the name of his beloved, and the word “Maria” barely contains his wonder. One of the first words heard by newborns is their name, reverently whispered by parents. What name best will fit this little person? Throughout scripture, names carry significance: from John the Baptist to Cephas/Peter to Jesus at the burial site calling Mary Mag-dalene after his Resurrection. So is it any surprise that those who revere the Virgin Mary have cherished her name for centuries? Take a moment to create a list of names, your personal litany of people who have nourished or inspired you. Then pray it in thanks-giving for them. TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Corinthians 10:14-22; Luke 6:43-49 (442). “No good tree bears bad fruit . . . for each tree is known by its own fruit.”
