September 3, 2017 - 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, One of the blessings I have found in my priesthood came to me by chance; about nine years ago, while searching for a retreat, one came my way that was directed by a priest whom I had first met as a seminari-an. Over the course of this retreat, I would be introduced to the writings of another priest, the late Msgr. Luigi Giussani, which have guided me in many ways. Something that Msgr. Giussani said years ago, has been on my bedroom mirror, for reflection and direction, it starts off, “To be good priests, you first of all have to be men, to feel what men feel. Live the relationship with everything that becomes present. Live the truth of your humanity.” My priesthood exists because God chose to become a man, to embrace hu-manity, and without humanity, I could not embrace my priesthood. Opportunities arise for us to embrace our humanity, and even though we work because it is a part of who and what we are, when the opportunity presents itself for us to rest, we need to take those gifts of relaxa-tion and interaction with those who we love; those who we spend our time working for. Sundays, the Sab-bath, is God’s gift to us, so that we can rest at least one day a week, so that we can take time to be with family and friends, and with God, because at the heart of being human is being in relationship with others, and with the Other. Society has come to recognize the basic need for rest and relaxation, giving days off from work, maternity/paternity leave in some instances, as a chance for parents to bond with their new child. Even this great weekend, marking the unofficial end of summer, and the return to school, is a cele-bration of the American Worker, which we celebrate by not working. Thankfully, because of family, especially my father, and friends, my living quarters are now actually my living quarters, and instead of living out of boxes, I am living in the pastor’s suite. Knowing that I am firmly installed in my own home allows me to enjoy that security which is fundamental to being human. Many of you have heard the announcements that the parish center is closed this week, that is because an-other friend of mine, Neil McKnight, and his son Brendan, have been busy cleaning, stripping and waxing the floors in the auditorium and hallways. They have already cleaned the carpets in the office, chapel and classrooms, and the finishing touches will be this week, so no one walk on the floors. Between the groups that meet in the parish center, the children who come for faith formation, all those coming into the chapel for Mass and adoration, and the day to day business of the parish office, this was badly needed. Eventually, there will be changes to the church building and other areas of the parish, as funds become available. Currently, the church is cleaned by volunteers, parishioners who give their time to ensure that everything is clean and neat, and that any leaks from above are mopped up; even the lack of leaks has been because someone has volunteered their skills to temporarily repair the roof. For a church campus this large, it is hard to imagine that we do not have maintenance people, or even contractors for repairs. For all those who have been doing so much for the parish, please take this weekend off and enjoy yourselves. Take some time to enjoy being human. Pax,

Fr. Henry

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s interesting to imagine the scene when the changes in our liturgy were first tested. Choices for prayer texts were one thing, but responses from the people were another. In early 1967, secret test-drives of the new Mass were conducted in the Vatican. Pope Paul VI was present, and there was a handful of bish-ops, priests, a few laypeople and two sisters making up the assembly. Everyone had a booklet with every word of the songs, rubrics, and prayers, blank paper, and a pencil for notes. After each Mass, the ordained men in the group met in the pope’s library to share their expe-riences. The laypeople and sisters met separately. Over a week’s time they tested what they called a “read Mass with singing,” a “Mass entirely recited,” and a “Sung Mass.” While the ordained were generally in favor, the lay comments were very clear and insight-ful, and had great impact on the final result. This was a brilliant plan on the part of the pope, who got to see how the reform was going, and to recognize in this small trial run a growing consensus that reform was needed and welcome. Based on his observation, Pope Paul VI called for specific innovations, such as begin-ning the Mass with the sign of the cross. It’s amazing that some of our most familiar rites are really quite new treasures of our tradition! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Labor Day Friday: The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Saturday: St. Peter Claver RELIGION DEFINED I do not know how philosophers may ultimately define religion; but from Micah to James it has been defined as service to one’s fellow human rendered by following the great rule of justice and mercy, of wis-dom and righteousness. —Theodore Roosevelt

FOLLOWING CHRIST If you’ve ever had an unpleasant but somewhat amus-ing practical joke played on you, then you have some un-derstanding of how Jeremiah feels today when he tells God “good one—you duped me.” We can almost see him shak-ing his head with a bit of a rueful smile, but an angry un-dertone in his voice. In similar fashion, Peter thinks Jesus is “duping” him when Jesus starts to explain that being Messiah means suffering and dying, and being a follower of the Messiah means taking up a cross and doing the same. Jeremiah tries to deny God’s will for him by trying to shut up; Peter—who has just been made the foundation of the church—out and out denies the teaching of Jesus, for which he is named “Satan” today. Fortunately for us, Jeremiah comes to realize that to have the word of God placed in your heart means that it will be futile to try and keep silent, even if it means scorn and derision from those around you. Luckily Peter ultimately returned to the faith he professed in last week’s Gospel, and came to under-stand our need as baptized followers of Christ to follow in his way, even when it means following him to our very death. This week we are very grateful that the parish center was cleaned before classes start. We are very grateful to James Reid ( Father Henry’s Dad) for working so hard to finish the Pastor Suite. We are grateful to have him fix our desks and assist Father Henry in Cutting branches from the trees so they can be removed easier. We are so very grateful to Bill Fontaine and the many Scouts who cam to help us move things to get ready for the store in the Rectory, moving prizes for the upcoming Chinese Auction, and moving everything so the floors can be done. A special thanks to Duane Shpak, Kevin Handley and his Son for moving all the items to the rectory and the church. Thanks to Melita and Tony DeFino for moving shelves and hardware to the Rectory store from the Parish Center. As you can see by looking around things are being done, moved and fixed, and we are all excited. Just a reminder that there is a Half Way to St. Patrick’s Day Concert on September 17th, see the flyer further along in this bulletin. On September 17th there is the Catholic Boy Scout Convocation at St. Agnes Cathedral with Bishop Robert J. Brennan awarding Scouts for their achievements. .
