In the past few years, Catholics who pay attention to what is going on in the Church have surely heard about what is being called “the New Evangelization.” This is a specific call to people who are nominally Catholic to re-engage in their faith, to cultivate a fresh relationship with Jesus Christ, and to do what they can to spread the faith to others. The Catholic research organization CARA discovered through various surveys that “the most common reasons given by Catholics who do not regularly attend Mass are not related to controversial issues. The reasons given instead point to a gradual slipping away from the faith. Most Catholics stop attending Mass because they (1) have busy schedules or a lack of time, (2) have family responsibilities, (3) have health problems or disabilities, (4) have conflicts with work, (5) do not believe missing Mass is a sin, or (6) believe that they are not very religious people.” The Church, whose mission, of course, is to bring souls to salvation in Christ, must do everything possible to reanimate the Spirit given to the Apostles at Pentecost, a Spirit that has kept the Church alive for these twenty centuries since the death and resurrection of Jesus. Spiritual renewal in the Church can only happen through an individual conversion of heart, a coming-to-believe on the part of inactive Catholics everywhere. Our first readings at Mass since Easter have been from the New Testament book, Acts of the Apostles. Here we get a vivid picture of how the early Christian conversions took place. What the first missionaries would do when they arrived in a new city was to go wherever the people were praying – it didn’t matter what religion they were practicing, whether the Jewish faith or some pagan religion. The response to the charismatic message of the missionaries was overwhelming. Acts tells us that on one occasion, hearing St. Peter speak, “about three thousand persons were added that day.” Initially, these groups of believers would gather at the home of one of the members, probably the one with the largest house, where they would pray together and share the Eucharistic meal. It was only once these communities grew to hundreds that they began to first borrow, and then to build large public buildings for worship. A similar Evangelization must continue today, and it will take the effort of all of us, the ordained clergy, catechists, and Catholics from all walks of life who have the opportunity to witness to those around them, by their words and by their acts. The more we grow in our own love and trust in Jesus Christ, the more the Holy Spirit will fill us with the gifts we need to share our faith with others. Keeping ourselves open to the action of the Holy Spirit allows us to not just hear the word of God with our ears, but with our hearts, so that we can take it in and be enlightened by it, and made more perfect disciples of Christ. And we should be assured, that every soul we bring to Christ, everyone we help to find his or her way back to God, will be a special credit us on our own road to salvation. Fr. Ulysses

P. Ulises

PEOPLE OF HOPE Throughout this Easter season the readings have drawn us into the experience of the early church. We have tasted the excitement and zeal of the first Christians. Now, with them, we listen to the words of Saint Peter, who reminds us that when people notice that we are people of hope, we should be ready to explain why. This challenges us. Do others even notice that we are people of hope? In a world often marked by cynicism and hopelessness, do we stand out as people who offer hope and reassurance to others? In today’s Gospel Jesus promises that when he leaves the earth he will not leave us orphaned. Today he promises to send his Advocate, the Spirit of truth who will be with us always. Let us acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and ask the Spirit to make us people of hope.

It’s very appropriate that this month of May, a month dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, should conclude with a special feast in her honor. The Visitation of Mary, celebrated on May 31, is spiritually connected with the feasts of the Annunciation and the Birth of John the Baptist. After all, it was the announcement of the angel Gabriel that

prompted Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth. And it was John the Baptist whom Elizabeth had conceived in her womb. Some of the Marian feasts in the Church calendar, such the Feast of the Assumption of Mary in Heaven, refer to Church doctrines concerning the Blessed Mother. Others, such as the Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe, or Fatima, or Lourdes concern Mary’s various appearances over the centuries. But the Feast of the Visitation, like that of the Annunciation, celebrates an actual event recorded in the Bible. St. Luke’s Gospel tells us that after being told by the angel Gabriel that her cousin, Elizabeth, had conceived a child in her old age, Mary ‘hastened to the hill country, to a town in Judea where Elizabeth lived.’ There the two women greeted one another in great joy. This meeting is not only the encounter of the two holy, but also of their unborn infants, the future John the Baptist and Jesus himself. This Joyful Mystery of the Visitation indicates the importance of Mary in the history of our salvation and the reason we honor her with so much devotion. Fr. Ulysses
