Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church
Erected in 1936, the entire structure reflects the architectural style developed by missionaries,
combining the building patterns of the Pueblo Indians with Spanish-Colonial design. Even the landscaping, with carefully selected shrubs and
trees, is typical.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
EYEWITNESSES
Today, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the
Lord, is a day of eyewitness accounts. The first, a
vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well
known to Jesus and his apostles. The vision account
was written in quite mystical and figurative
language. It is a vision of heaven, powerful and
memorable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels,
the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel
saw something. But was it a dream? Was it real? Was
it merely a clever myth?
Peter wants no such confusion about his vision!
We are told in Matthew’s Gospel what he and his
friends James and John saw when they went up on
the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the
three witnesses to tell no one until “the Son of Man
has been raised from the dead” (Matthew 17:9). Lest
readers of one of the Gospels discount the story or
simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his
own account of the Transfiguration of Jesus in his
second letter to the church. He writes with authority,
as an eyewitness. He reports this message from God
concerning Jesus: “This is my Son, my beloved, with
whom I am well pleased,” and he assures us that the
message is “altogether reliable” (2 Peter 1:17, 19). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
Whole Community Faith Sharing
Gospel - Matthew 17:1-9 Reflection: Today’s mountain walk was a huge experience for the three who would always be with him. They saw Jesus in his glory. Somehow they knew the real identity of Jesus – beloved son of the Father: more to him than meets the eye. We all know we don’t live on a mountain top. Lots of our lives are lived in the valleys, where we hope the clouds will clear. Sometimes we might feel like we are in a fog, searching for answers, unable to see them. When we climb the mountain we see new views. We notice beauty and joy from a new vantage point. Faith Question: We were created to be in the world, even when it is hard and does not seem glorious. How can I transform myself to show that God is within me? Faith Response: This week I will reflect on the words of Mother Teresa: Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary. What we need is to love without getting tired.

Pastoral Council
Looking Back at the Year First, Father Lawrence and the Pastoral Council are happy to announce three new appointed members to the council: Jack Stratford, Nick Teti, and Frank Umanzio. They will add greatly in serving the parish.
2016/2017 has been an exciting year for the Pastoral Council and the entire OLMC parish. It began last July with the Council hosting a Welcome Luncheon for our new pastor Father Lawrence following his Installation Mass. Many family, friends and parishioners were there to welcome Father and enjoy delicious food, music, fellowship -- even Bishop Barron joined in the festivities.
Last fall the Council conducted a Parish Music Questionnaire, soliciting your input to improve our music liturgy. We also hosted two more of the now popular Wine and Cheese Receptions after the Saturday Vigil Mass. The main purpose of these mixers is to introduce new parishioners to the parish family.
The Parish Christmas Potluck, coordinated and hosted by the Council, had its largest turnout yet. Between the toasts, caroling, and eating scrumptious food and wine, it truly was a festive holiday evening.
During Lent we hosted the last Stations of the Cross and Soup Night. It was very well attended and the amazing cioppino, prepared for by our own “chef in residence" David Crooks, was not to be forgotten!
Besides the spring Wine and Cheese Reception, the Council, under the inspiration of Father Lawrence, also hosted and coordinated the very first parish Mass on the Grass and Potluck BBQ. Parishioners and families enjoyed worship, fellowship and the delicious food, with many request to have more.
In addition to these many hospitality events, the Council continues to advise Father on parish matters, support OLMC school and our various ministries, and to further grow the Sunday Greeters Program.
This coming year promises to be another exciting one — all under the visionary and energetic leadership of Father Lawrence. We’ll keep you posted!

91st Annual Religious Emblem Recognition Mass Ad Altare Dei—Pope Pius XII
A special Mass was held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels to celebrate and recognize many fine young men in our Archdiocese for their outstanding achievements in Scouting. Our parish community is blessed to have three of these young men— Matthew Helkey, Sam Krautmann and Luke Williams. Matthew was awarded the Pope Pius XII emblem. The Pope Pius XII program is Catholic Scouting’s church-related ministries and vocation program. Sam and Luke were awarded the Ad Altare Dei emblem. This program helps Catholic Scouts develop a fully Christian way of life in the faith community. Congratulations again Matthew, Sam and Luke and thank you for your time, hard work and dedication to not only Catholic Scouting but to our parish community.
St. George, Soldier & Martyr -Patron of Boy Scouts St. George, soldier, you fought the good fight and won the victory of your salvation.

Did You Know? Talk to Your Teens about Dating
High school may be a time when teenagers begin to think about dating, making communication between teens and their parents even more important. Consider having an open, honest conversation with your teen about dating and appropriate relationships. Talk about what they want out of a relationship, and what their values are. Make sure they know how to communicate what they feel comfortable with, and what makes them uncomfortable. Talk with them about Catholic morals, and make sure they know you are always available. To request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Talking with Your Teen about Dating Safety” email

Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel There is a tradition–which may not be historical—that Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Mary’s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The scapular reminds us of the gospel’s call to prayer and penance—a call that Mary models in a splendid way.
Volunteers Needed The Catholic Charities of Santa Barbara is seeking volunteers to assist in their Food Pantry, Thrift Store and Administrative office. If interested, please contact Yolanda Vasquez@ 805/964-7045. Applications are now being accepted and training will be provided.
