Liturgy Notes The Scripture Readings for the next two (2) weekends are a little on the heavy side. It is most common at this time of the year, and in the Church’s Liturgical Cycle, to have reminders of the end times, the
Second Coming of Christ, and why we should think of amending our lives. This has been well expressed at through homilies over the years at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Seasonably speaking, the Church also refers to this as harvest time. Our Lord is the “Lord of the Harvest”. We come each weekend to the Celebration of the Eucharist to listen, share, express, give thanks, and praise the Lord in what is considered our (as Catholics) highest form of worship. The Anthem at the 10AM Liturgy is a text of celebration, thanks, praise and tribute to God’s creation, gifts and generous love he sus-tains us with. ”We Plow the Fields and Scatter” was written by Ger-man poet Mattias Claudius in 1782. Of German origin, this text was commonly associated with harvest festivals and celebrations. Claudius became ill and returned to Christianity after leaving it in his 20’s. Through the period of his illness, he wrote a number of poems. This particular text is based on Psalm 144. It was translated in Eng-lish by Jane Montgomery Campbell in 1861. Other hymns this weekend, “We Gather Together”, “For the Fruits of this Creation”, “Gift of Finest Wheat”, and “For the Beauty of the Earth”, all acknowledge, in their own way, our gratitude of our lives, being strong in our faith together, despite the advisory trying to pull us away from the love of God, and finally, the harvest of our labor and appreciation of our temporary earthly home. ~Ray Murphy, Music Director

The Sadducees in Sunday’s Gospel challenge Jesus to take a stand on resurrection, a notion they did not accept. They cited a law that required a man to marry his brother’s widow in order to preserve the brother’s
name. The law assumed a physical notion of living on through one’s children. Jesus argues, “God is God of the living.” He quotes God’s words to Moses, “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Ja-cob” (Exodus 3:15) to emphasize that these people are alive to God. God is God of all who have lived as well as all people living now. The lesson here is to trust the future to the God who has given all life and who raised Jesus from the dead. Pray Together: When your conversation about today’s readings is over, pray for those people you know who have died and who now experience life everlasting. Honor their memory by praying the Our Father together. At the beginning of November we celebrated All Saints Day fol-lowed by All Souls day. Our church has a rich history of great men and women who became saints! This week vis-it www.catholic.org, and learn more about your namesake Saints. Thanksgiving is coming soon. Take a few minutes this week to write down a person that you are thankful for having in your life. Say a special prayer for them!
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Scholarship
This scholarship is open to registered parishioners that are high school seniors and have received a formal letter of ac-ceptance from accredited 2 or 4 year college, or, a presently enrolled college student. Application forms can be picked up from the Parish Office. The Scholarship Review Board will consider the completed applications when making their selec-tion. All applications for this scholarship are due in the Parish Office by December 31st. (Please note new due date.)

Thanksgiving Food Collection : NEXT Weekend The Social Justice Ministry will be collecting food on the Weekends of November 16th & 17th as well as November 23rd & 24th to prepare Thanksgiving baskets for those in need. Donations of Thanksgiving type food would be most appreciat-ed. Items that we will collect for the baskets are: frozen turkeys, stuffing mix, jar and canned gravy, canned cranberries, canned vegetables, canned fruit, juice, instant potatoes, soups, pasta, pasta sauce, pie crusts and pie fillings, cookies and other packaged desserts. The food items can be placed at any entrance to the church on the weekends of November 16th/17th & 23rd/24th. Holy Hour in Honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be prayed from 6:00-7:00PM NEXT Wednesday, November 20th in Church. Holy Hour includes Exposition of The Blessed Sacrament, Respect Life Rosary and Benediction.
Faith formation
Sister Ann’s Recipes - (Irish) Bubble & Squeak Hash 3 tbsp. butter or margarine 1 small onion, diced 2 c. shredded cooked cabbage 2 c. mashed potatoes 2 c. diced cooked roast beef Melt butter over low heat; add onion and saute until tender. Combine cabbage, potatoes and beef. Add to skillet pressing with fork to form large cake. Cook over moderate heat until well browned. Loosen cake with spatula; slide onto
plate. Flip back into skillet, uncooked side down. Cook until well browned. Cut into wedges to serve. You can make this for supper with rye bread. Serves 4, as the hash fries in the skillet it bubbles and squeaks- hence its unique name.

The doctrine and practice of indulgences in the Church are close-ly linked to the effects of the Sacrament of Penance.
What is an Indulgence ? “An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal pun-ishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints.” “An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin.” Indul-gences may be applied to the living or the dead. ~ Catechism of the Catholic Church 1471 The spiritual treasury that the Church draws on in granting an indulgence is the infinite merits of Christ’s redeeming actions in the sight of God. In 1967, Pope Paul VI, clarified the Church’s teaching on the practices of indulgences (Indulgentiarum Doctrina).
Some Means of Gaining a Partial Indulgence:
Praying the Magnificat or Hail Holy Queen Praying the Acts of Faith, Hope, and Love and the
Creed Making the Sign of the Cross Visit to the Blessed Sacrament Visit to the Cemetery
Conditions for Gaining Plenary Indulgence: Sacrament of Reconciliation Reception of Communion Prayer for the Holy Father, Pope Francis
Some Means of Gaining Plenary Indulgence: Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for at least one
-half hour Scripture reading for at least one-half hour Way of the Cross Rosary prayed in a Church or family group or reli-
gious community, etc.
