Religious Education News Saint Maria Goretti – Feast Day – July 6
Patron of youth, purity and victims of rape.
Born: October 16, 1890
Death: July 6, 1902
Canonized by: Pope Pius XII in 1950
St. Maria Goretti is the youngest canonized saint in the Church.
Her father died when Maria was nine years old. To help support her
mother and five siblings, Maria worked as a maid for the Serenelli family
that lived nearby. A member of that family -Alessandro Serenelli –
developed an impure liking for Maria and attempted to rape her. Maria was 11 years old and
Alessandro 20 years old. Though she prevented him from violating her, Alessandro brutally
stabbed her and she died the next day from her injuries.
Maria Goretti appeared to Alessandro while he was imprisoned and forgave him. From that
moment, he lived a life of holiness and became a Franciscan brother. Alessandro wrote the
following testimony dated May 5, 1961, as his spiritual legacy:
“I’m nearly 80 years old. I’m about to depart. Looking back at my past, I can see that in
my early youth, I chose a bad path which led me to ruin myself. My behavior was influ-
enced by print, mass-media and bad examples which are followed by the majority of young
people without even thinking. There were a lot of generous and devoted people who sur-
rounded me, but I paid no attention to them because a violent force blinded me and pushed
me toward a wrong way of life. When I was 20 years-old, I committed a crime of passion.
Maria Goretti, now a saint, was my good angel, sent to me through Providence to guide and
save me. I still have impressed upon my heart her words of rebuke and of pardon. She
prayed for me, she interceded for her murderer. I hope this letter that I wrote can teach
others the happy lesson of avoiding evil and of always following the right path, like little
children. I feel that religion, with its precepts, is not something we can live without, but
rather it is the real comfort, the real strength in life and the only safe way in every
circumstance, even the most painful ones of life.”

Definition: Hospitality is the friendly and generous reception of guests, visitors, or strangers, welcoming them as we would welcome Christ.
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 13: 2 Do not neglect hospitality, for through it
some have unknowingly entertained angels.
Prayer of Reflection: Lord Jesus, bless me with a heart of hospitali-ty. Let me see others as I would see you. Let others see in me the warmth of your love.
Amen.

PRAYER FOR FAMILY LIFE
God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and
daughters in the family of the Church. May your grace and love help our families in every part of the
world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family, with
the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of com-
munion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your love, through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Pray for us !
How to Go to Confession…
1. Preparation—Before going to confession, the penitent compares his or her life with the Ten Com-
mandments, the Beatitudes and the example of Christ and prays to God for forgiveness.
2. Going to Confession—After the priest welcomes you, both make the sign of the cross. Then you
may wish to indicate facts about your life, the time of the last confession, difficulties in leading the Chris-
tian life and anything else that may help the priest.
3. The Word of God—You or the priest may read one of the suggested scriptural passages
4. Confession of Sins and the Act of Penance—Confess your sins. The priest then offers suitable advice and imposes an act
of penance or satisfaction, which may include prayer, self-denial or works of mercy.
5. Prayer of the Penitent—Pray a prayer expressing sorrow for your sins and resolving not to sin again. One suggestion is: My
God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom
I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me
to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His name, may God, have mercy.
6. Absolution—The priest extends his hands over your head and pronounces the formula of absolution, making the sign of the
cross over your head during the final words. You answer, Amen.
7. Proclamation of Praise—Praise the mercy of God and give him thanks in a short invocation taken from Scripture, such as
“Rejoice in the Lord and sing for joy, friends of God or The Lord has remembered His mercy or Blessed be God who chose us
in Christ.
8. Dismissal—The priest dismisses you with the command to go in peace. Continue to express your conversion through a life
renewed according to the Gospel and more and more steeped in the love of God.
Why Use Church Envelopes?
Because it enables us to recognize you as a practicing Catholic and contributing member of our parish. Very often we receive requests for letters of verification for purposes of acting as sponsor at Baptism, Confirmation or for school subsidy purposes. Without having a record of giving, it is difficult to do this. The parish office tracks your contributions if you use your registered parishioner envelopes. Your registered envelopes (you receive bi-monthly) are personalized with your envelope number as well as your name and address. We ask that you provide the entire envelope and please do not cut up the envelope. If you use the envelopes provided in the church (in the pews), please write your Name, Address & Telephone # clearly on the envelope to receive proper credit. For more information please call the Pastoral Center Office at (321) 636-6834.
