"At the name of Jesus every knee must bend, in the heavens, on the earth, and under the earth, and every tongue proclaim, to the glory of God the Father: JESUS CHRIST IS LORD! “ (Philippians 2:10-11) This Sunday brings the current liturgical year of the Church to an end. Throughout this entire year, through the observances of various feasts and seasons, the Church has tried to help us to know Christ better and to come into closer communion with Him. As we bring this liturgical year to a close, we do so with a celebration that befits the greatness of Jesus Christ and who, in fact, He is. This last Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year is celebrated as the Solemnity of Jesus Christ the Universal King. The Solemnity of Christ the King acknowledges that Jesus is the sovereign ruler of the universe and that we are all subject to Him. St. Paul tells us that “Christ must reign until God has put all enemies under His feet, and the last enemy to be destroyed is death” (1 Cor 15, 25-26). Although the accusers of Jesus tried to present Him as a political king so that the Romans would find Him guilty of treason, which is punishable by death, Jesus’ sovereignty has nothing to do with politics. On the contrary, the Kingdom of Jesus has to do with love, truth and righteousness. In speaking to Pontius Pilate, Jesus said, “…the reason I came into this world is to testify to the truth. Anyone committed to the truth hears My voice” (Jn 18, 37). During his papacy from 1922 to 1939, Pope Pius XI observed an alarming rise in secularism throughout much of Europe. He realized that this was bringing about an increasing denial of Christ and His Gospel. People who claimed to be Christian, including Catholics, were increasingly doubting Christ’s authority and even His existence. To hopefully turn people back to Jesus and His sovereignty, in 1925 Pope Pius XI established the Feast of Christ the King through his encyclical Quas Primas (In the First). This feast was to be observed and celebrated by the Church throughout the world Therefore, at the close of this liturgical year, we honor Jesus Christ as our Sovereign King. He is truly our Lord and Ruler. His rule is love, and He calls each of us unto Himself because He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. We are all part of His Kingdom, which will never end. To belong to His Kingdom takes nothing more than our desire and will to belong, and to be faithful to His commandments of love. In fact, Jesus points out that the greatest and most important commandments are “love of God and love of neighbor”. Let us give true honor and glory to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, our Universal King!

The solemnity of Christ the King is also the patronal feast day of the Society of Christ, the order of which Fr. Tom, Fr. Rich, Fr. Ted Winnicki (the pastor of St Joan of Arch) and myself are members. The Society of Christ was founded in 1932 by Cardinal August Hlond and approved by Pope Pius XI to serve the pastoral needs of Polish communities in various countries around the world. The priests and brothers of the Society of Christ, as well as our sister order, The Missionary Sisters of Christ the King, serve the pastoral needs of the Church in 23 countries on five continents of the world. Here in the United States we have 43 priests serving 27 parishes in 20 dioceses as well as an additional 11 priests serving 5 parishes in Canada. We ask for your prayers that we may continue in our mission of serving Christ our King.

Everyone who took part in the Harvest Festival this year can agree that it was a success and a fun time had by all. Many people are now asking about results of the festival. I too am anxious to know the final numbers, but unfortunately it takes time to process all the income and expenses. Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, I had to submit this article for printing on November 16, and at that time, there were still several receivables and payables pending. It appears, however, that we will have a net profit between $80,000 and $90,000 from the festival. This is a great amount and is very much needed by the school. We will have a final report on the festival very soon. Thank you again to everyone who helped to make this year’s festival a great success!

Office of Victim’s Assistance Help is available to you or anyone who has been abused or victimized by someone representing the Roman Catholic Church. Contact the Victim Assistance Coordinator at 702-235-7723.

Please be mindful of not shaking others’ hands for the Sign of Peace when you are sick and could pass on germs, especially during flu season. No

one is obligated to shake hands at the sign of peace. As an alternative to shaking hands, you may simply bow to those around you and say, “Peace be with you.” If your fellow parishioners decide upon this option, do not be offended, as it is merely for sanitary concerns and is not personal.

You may also want to consider not taking the Blood of Christ while you are sick.

WARNING - EMAIL SCAM There seems to be a scam circulating that sends emails to selected parishioners and ministry leaders requesting $200 in specific gift cards to be copied and returned to the sending email. The sender uses the name of the Pastor and explains they are for a terminally ill individual. This is troubling because the sender knows the name of the Pastor and has some parishioners’ and ministry leaders’ email addresses. It’s not clear how the sender obtained this information but it is disconcerting.

Q: WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE OPLATEKI CHRISTMAS WAFERS?

A: Just before the Christmas Eve meal (in Polish called Wigilia) the entire family will gather around the table with the Oplatki. Generally the eldest member of the family will begin the ritual by breaking off a piece of the wafer and passing it to another family member with a blessing. This blessing can simply consist of what you desire for your loved one in the upcoming year - whether it be good health, success, or happiness. The wafer is passes from person to person until all have had a piece and all have been given blessings. The purpose of this act is primarily to express ones unconditional love and forgiveness for each member of his or her family.

Simeon Gallagher, OFMCap will help us explore the fundamental aspects of spiritual development as reflected through the lens of relationships: Faith, Prayer, Conversion and Community. All four are intricately linked one to the other. The end result of the mission is a ‘spirituality’ that will enable us to recognize God in each other.

CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It’s easy to understand today’s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus’ words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now.

By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he “has made us into a kingdom” (Revelation 1:6)—one people united in love and peace for all eternity. Copyright © J. S.
