This past week I came across a bulletin article I wrote a couple of years ago, regarding Independence Day and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Even though we celebrated Independence Day last week, I thought these little tidbits of information could bear repeating. We all know that Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence which took place on July 4, 1776 and declared the United States’ independence from Great Britain. The legal separation of the original Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the
Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by the Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, and finally approved it on July 4. Fifty-six delegates to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia signed the United States Declaration of Independence, announcing that the thirteen American Colonies, which were at war with Great Britain, were now independent states, and thus no longer a part of the British Empire. Although the wording of the Declaration was approved by Congress on July 4, the date of its signing has been disputed. Some historians have concluded that it was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed. Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams however, all wrote that the Declaration had been signed by Congress on July 4, 1776. Furthermore, the Journals of Congress, the official public record of the Continental Congress, also supports the July 4 signing.
Interesting facts about the 4th of July… Did you know that of the 56 delegates who signed the Declaration of Independence, two of them, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson served as the second and third presidents of the United States respectively? Did you also know that three presidents died on the 4th of July? Both President John Adams and President Thomas Jefferson died on the same day, July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Also, President James Monroe, although he was not a signer of the Declaration of Independence but a Founding Father and fourth President of the United States, died on July 4, 1831. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872. The most famous signature on the Declaration of Independence is that of John Hancock. John Hancock was never president of the United States but he was President of Congress and was the first to sign the Declaration. Hancock's large, flamboyant signature became iconic, and the name “John Hancock” to this day is still synonymous for the word "signature". We truly live in a great country, and we’ve been blessed to have the freedoms we enjoy. With freedom, however, comes responsibility. This means we have the obligation to respect this country, which gave us our freedoms, and to respect each other as we live and share this land together. Let us never take what we have for granted, lest we lose it. That which is precious to us must always be taken care of. In His parable this Sunday, Jesus likens us to seeds that are sown. Some seeds make it, some seeds don’t. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the Word and understands it, and bears fruit and yields a harvest of a hundred, sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.
J 12, 2020 F S O T - 3
First Reading — My word will achieve the end for which it was sent (Isaiah 55:10-11). Psalm — The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest (Psalm 65). Second Reading — We, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan within ourselves awaiting the redemption of our bodies (Romans 8:18-23). Gospel — Some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit (Matthew 13:1-23 [1-9]). An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus,
I believe that You are present
in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and
unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen. https://www.ewtn.com/catholicism/devotions/act-of-spiritual-communion-339
