F 10, 2019 2 — O L L V C C

Every February 14, in the United States and in many other places around the world; candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. February 14th is, of course, Valentine’s Day. But who is St. Valentine, and where did these traditions come from?. Information from the History website tells us that, as with many of the special days throughout the year we celebrate, not much is specifically known of the history of why we celebrate them . The history of Valentine’s Day, and who St. Valentine is, is somewhat of a mystery. February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and the observances of Valentine’s Day today come from both ancient Roman and Christian traditions. But the question still remains, who was St. Valentine, and how did he become associated with what we know as Valentine’s Day today?

The Catholic Church recognizes that there were at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus. All three of them are regarded as martyrs. One legend maintains that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform secret marriages for young couples in love. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, Valentine, who was imprisoned, actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl, who possibly could have been his jailor’s daughter. Supposedly she visited Valentine while he was in prison. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter and signed it “From your Valentine,”. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends are unclear, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and romantic figure. Love, of course, is a powerful virtue. In Chapter 13 of his first letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul says that there are three things that last: faith, hope and love; and the greatest of these is love. The problem is that we often associate love with feelings and emotions that have very little to do with the real meaning of love. Love is often associate with things and feelings that are directed at myself: I love chocolate, I love new clothes, I love to travel…etc. Love is even directed at people because they awaken in me some wonderful feelings. Love, of course, has nothing to do with any selfish meaning we often associate with love… things that make me feel good and satisfy my desires. Love is just the opposite. It has little to do with feelings that make me feel all warm and fuzzy… Love is rather a choice, to not think of myself first, but to always put the other person ahead of me. Last Sunday, in the second reading, we heard St. Paul’s discourse on love, taken from his first letter to the Corinthians , chapter 13. St. Paul says “Love is patient, love is kind, love is not jealous, it does not put on airs, it is not snobbish. Love is never rude, it is not self seeking, it is not prone to anger”… etc. During my homily I suggested substituting the word love with Jesus… Jesus is patient, Jesus is kind…etc. The passage holds up very well. Then I suggested that everyone substitute the word “love” with their own name… I am patient, I am kind… to see how the narrative holds up. To say the least, we could all use some improvement. To understand what real love is, look at the cross and see how Jesus offered his life for us so that we could have life to the fullest. Love is never about “me”. It is always about the other person. It’s always about choice and sacrifice for the good of the other. That is what Jesus shows us and what he did for us. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Next Weekend’s Second Collection Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, On the weekend of February 16 and 17, our Diocese will be taking up the national collection for the Catholic Home Missions and the Black and Indian Missions. Our Catholic faith is one of beauty and hope, mercy and joy. But for too many people across the country, there are few opportunities to learn about and deepen that faith. Even the most basic programs are out of reach because of fragile financial situations, tough terrain, or small populations of Catholics. One does not need to go far to find mission territory: it is right here at home. Nearly half of our country is considered home mission territory. This appeal strengthens the Catholic Church in the United States and its territories where resources are thin and priests are few. Proceeds are distributed as grants to dioceses supporting and strengthening evangelization programs which would otherwise be in danger of disappearing among the Caribbean, South Pacific, Black and American Indian communities. Your support helps these mission dioceses form vibrant faith communities and strengthens the Church at home. Monies are used for a wide range of pastoral services including evangelization, religious education, and maintenance of mission parishes, the training of seminarians and lay ministers, and ministry with ethnic groups. Please be generous, and prayerfully consider how you can support this collection. May the Lord continue to bless you and your families, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, +George Leo Thomas Bishop of Las Vegas

GOD’S SUMMONS Confronted with God’s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips,” he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”

Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I am, send me.”

We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won’t lead to anything.

What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God’s messenger? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
