b VÉÅx? b VÉÅx? XÅÅtÇâxÄ4b VÉÅx? b VÉÅx? XÅÅtÇâxÄ4b VÉÅx? b VÉÅx? XÅÅtÇâxÄ4 With the words of this enchanting, ancient hymn, we begin the observance of the season of Advent. The four weeks of Advent begin this Sunday and call all of us to make ourselves ready for the coming of the Lord into the world. Advent is the first season of the new Liturgical Year, which also begins this Sunday. In a liturgical sense, Advent prepares the Church for the celebration of Christmas and the commemoration of the birth of Jesus. The color of the Advent season is purple. This rich, yet somber color, reminds us of the majesty of the One for whom we have

been waiting. It also reminds us that, in order to be ready to receive the Savior into our hearts and into our lives, we must make room for Him. We must clear our lives of all the things that prevent us from welcoming Him. And the thing that keeps us from really being able to welcome Him is sin and our adherence to sin. The purple color reflects our need for conversion through discipline and penance. Advent announces the coming of the Prince of Peace, but as we can see all too clearly, the world is not taking a peaceful path. More than ever people seem to be divided, and this division appears to make it ok to forgo the very fundamentals of courtesy and mutual respect towards others, especially towards those whose opinions differ from our own. The lack of peace is the result of the lack of love. When we fail to love, we reject the most important commandments our Savior gave us: to love God with our heart and soul, and to love our neighbor as we love our self. Jesus’ parting words to His disciples were “As I have loved you, so you should love one another. This is how the world will know that you are my disciples: if you have love for one another” (Jn 13:35-34). How can we claim to be disciples of Jesus or celebrate his birth if we cannot and do not carry his banner of love? Jesus is not talking about love for just a few select individuals. He means love for all people without exception. Without love there can be no peace, and without peace there is no joy. The good news is that Advent continually announces that even a world lost in sin can find redemption in our God who loves us no matter what. God sent his Son to everyone and he offers his grace to everyone. But even God’s grace will only do us any good if we open ourselves up to him, accept his gift and allow it into our heart and soul. Unless we embrace our Savior and pull him close to our hearts, nothing will change. We will continue along the same path. The world will continue along that path as well. Advent announces: Prepare the way of the Lord! And we need to prepare for Him even though Christ was born into the world over 2000 years ago. What good is His coming, or even acknowledging that He is already here, if we ignore His presence and the meaning and reason for His coming? Jesus is our Savior, but if we lose sight of what He came to save us from, then Jesus becomes unnecessary for us. His death and resurrection have no meaning or purpose. So, what have we forgotten? …that we are prone and subject to sin. Sin is everything that pulls us away from God. What’s worse is that we often don’t even realize that we are pulling away from God. Sin does that. It makes us think that we’re all ok. We become like lazy rafters floating down the river unaware of the waterfall just ahead. Advent is our wake up call to welcome, know and appreciate Christ as our Savior. Yes, the real meaning of Advent has to wrestle through this hectic time before Christmas, created by commerce and business. But if Christmas is to mean more to us than just a time of buying and accumulating things no one really needs; of going from one party to another; of decorating our houses with lights that rival the Las Vegas Strip, then we have to focus on the Real Reason for the Season. Let us prepare to welcome into our heart and soul Him who is the Light of the world; Him who gives us the gift of life; Him who invites all of us to the feast of His Kingdom. Let us allow Him to help us change so that we can release our attachment to sin; so that we can learn to love all people as He commands; so that we may, at last, find real and lasting peace in the world… COME, O COME, EMMANUEL!

Fr. Gerry

DECEMBER 2 & 3 Saturday & Sunday Masses

& DECEMBER 4 - 7 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Presented by Rev. Max Oliva, S.J. All are welcome to as many evenings as you wish.

In this parish mission, we will consider mercy in four ways: God, the source of mercy, God to us, we to others, and mercy to oneself. There are seven spiritual works of mercy - works that help our neighbor in his or her spiritual needs and seven corporal works of mercy - those that serve the bodily needs of others. These works of mercy will be considered in the presentations.

DARKNESS AND LIGHT

The Advent candles readily demonstrate the strong contrast between darkness and light. In the Bible, Christ is referred to as the “Light of the World” contrasted with the darkness of sin. Human history spanned long ages before our prophesied Savior would finally make his appearance, and God’s promise to make all things new through him.

As his Advent, or “coming,” draws nearer another candle is lit, with each candle dispelling the darkness a little more. Thus, the Advent wreath helps us to spiritually contemplate the great drama of salvation history that surrounds the birth of God Incarnate who comes to redeem the human race.
