From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Due to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, and to some vacation time I am taking, I will be out of the office and away from the parish for most of the next couple of weeks, November 20th – 29th to be exact. I will be spending most of this time down in California visiting my dad and siblings, and reconnecting with some good friends still living in the San Jose area where I spent my high-school and college years. I will be back to OLG in time for the start of Advent on the weekend of November 30th and December 1st.

I want to wish all the households and members of OLG a truly happy Thanksgiving. I hope and pray that Thanksgiving Day, and the days surrounding it, will be filled with blessings for all of you and your loved ones. For those who will be receiving visitors and guests, may your time with them be joyous and peace filled. For those who will be traveling, may you go forth and return in safety, and enjoy your time with the family members and/or friends you will be visiting.

If you will be staying home in West Seattle for Thanksgiving, I hope you will join your brothers and sisters in Christ for a special Thanksgiving Day Mass here at OLG. This Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day and will have Father Mike Raschko as the celebrant and homilist. Father Mike will also be covering the weekend Masses at OLG on November 23rd/24th for the Solemnity of Christ the King, the final Sunday of the current Liturgical Year. (Starting in Advent, we move to a new Liturgical Year and to a different cycle of Readings from the Sunday Lectionary.)

Father Mike Raschko was a teacher of mine in my pre-seminary graduate studies at Seattle University, and aided me enormously as the Weekend Assistant Priest for five years at my previous parish, Mary, Queen of Peace, in Sammamish where I was pastor from 2005 – 2019. We were all terribly sad at MQP when we learned that Father Mike was being moved to a new assignment and would no longer be our Weekend Assistant Priest. I want to thank Father Mike for his help once again in filling in for me during my time away. I know you will be in good hands with him here to celebrate Mass and to preach the Gospel.

Happy Thanksgiving to all,

Fr. Kevin

OLG Parish Feast Day Weekend

You are invited to celebrate our parish feast day with singing, praying, dancing and eating! Join us for “Light Up the Night” on Friday, December 6th beginning at 7:00 p.m. where we sing Christmas carols, drink hot chocolate and eat Christmas cookies as we countdown to the moment when we flip the switch on over 10,000 lights. Then, on Sunday, December 8th during the 11:00 a.m. Mass, the Guadalupe story is dramatically retold by our OLG School Student Council. Then, the St. Anthony Guadalupe dancers lead us out in procession to the Walmesley Center where we enjoy a fiesta hosted by the Nights of Columbus. Bring your family, friends and neighbors as we celebrate our parish community!!!

Thanksgiving Mass Thursday, November 28th at 10:00 a.m.

Start this holiday by giving thanks to God for all the bless-ings in our lives. Please bring donated food for our St. Vin-cent de Paul. Also, you are invited to bring any item for your special dinner to be blessed and enjoyed later that day.

Congratulations And God’s Blessings

Last weekend we celebrated the RCIA Rite of Acceptance with Matthew Mihlon and Julia Weidner who are not baptized and were enrolled into the Order of Catechumens. They have shown that the beginnings of the spiritual life and the fundamentals of Christian teaching have taken root in them. They have now pub-licly stated their desire to learn more about the Catholic faith and follow the ways of Christ and will now enter into a more intense time of formation which includes the ancient practice of dismissal following the Liturgy of the Word. Please continue to keep them in your prayers.

Spotlight on Catholic Relief Services Support Fragile Countries

Violence and conflict are now the leading causes of forced migration and displacement worldwide. At a time of great need, it is critical that the United States remains a global leader not only in supporting our suffering human family but also in working to prevent the conflict and violence that cause so much suffering. You can help lead the way to a solution. How? By calling on your Senators to pass the Global Fragility Act. Please visit www.crs.org to send an email to your Senators today to help advance the cause of peace.

Urge Your Senators to Act for Climate Change

In 2017, President Trump announced the U.S. would withdraw from the Paris Agreement, an international treaty signed by the U.S. and 193 other nations to address climate change. The U.S. Catholic Bishops responded saying that they, “along with Pope Francis and the entire Catholic Church, have consistently upheld the Paris Agreement as an important international mechanism to promote environmental stewardship and encourage climate change mitigation. The President’s decision not to honor the U.S. commit-ment to the Paris Agreement is deeply troubling.” The International Climate Accountability Act would help keep the U.S. in the Paris Agreement and ensure it remains a global leader in the effort to prevent climate change. Visit ipjc.org/legislative-action-center/ to take action today!

In 2017, the number of migrants worldwide reached 258 million. Roughly 70 million people were forcibly displaced, including more than 22 million refugees who crossed international borders. The Church believes people have the right to find opportunities in their home countries and the right to migrate when conditions in their country of origin preclude them from providing for the safety and wellbeing of their families. Safe Parking Information Meeting

Don't neglect to show hospitality, for by doing this some have welcomed angels as guests without knowing it. -Hebrews 13:2

Ever since WHEEL Women’s Shelter closed at OLG, we have been hoping to find another way to provide shelter on our campus. We are excited to announce we are making plans to partner with Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle to host several overnight Safe Parking spots in our gravel lot. This will continue our tradition of offering shelter to those in need in our community, just in time for colder weather! Please join us for dinner on Saturday, December 7 at 6:45 p.m. in the Walmesley Center to learn more about this program.

Christmas Wreaths

Jacob and Norene, long time parishioners, are again taking orders for Christmas wreaths made by the farm worker women of Oregon. The money made by the sale of the wreaths augments the families’ income during the winter months. This service project is especially dear to them as Jacob, himself was a farm worker in Oregon some 50 years ago. If you missed placing an order in the vestibule last week and this, you can call Norene at 206-399-6647 and order by November 25th. We will distribute the wreaths at all of the Masses on 11/30 and 12/1.

Shoe Boxes Of Joy - Don’t Forget To Bring Them To Mass Next Weekend

It is that time of year where we create “Shoe Boxes of Joy” for the variety of people served by CCS’ Volunteer Chore Services. Bring your donations in a shoe box that is wrapped with Christmas paper to Mass next weekend . They will be blessed by Fr. Kevin at the 11:00 a. m. Mass. In years past, CCS has told us that OLG donates the most shoe boxes - let’s keep it going again this year!!! Information, Helen Oesterle, 206-935-0358.

We Need Christmas Trees!!!

Our parish has been blessed in the past with parishioners who donated trees from the Christmas Tree farms. Alas, those farms have been sold and we are now looking for another sponsor to help our Arts & Environment Committee decorate our church for the Christmas season. If interested, contact Helen 206-935-0358 or [email protected]

Changes Coming In January To Offering Envelopes

The offering envelopes you receive in January may have a little different look to them. As of January, we are changing our envelope supplier. This change will result in a lower cost to the parish for offering envelopes. If you do not receive your January envelopes, or experience any problem with them, please let Marla, in the parish office, know.

Caring For God’s Creation

As we approach the holiday season, consider where you buy your gifts for loved ones. Consider purchas-ing items from fair trade sources, such as our own Ethical Trade Sale this weekend. Ethical trade changes the ways conventional trade often pollutes the earth and leaves behind the most vulnerable people. By buying ethical trade, you support skilled farmers and artisans who are breaking the cycle of poverty and building stronger communities in environmentally sustainable ways.
