SACRED CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE

OF THE FAITH

DECLARATION ON EUTHANASIA

“Human life is the ba-sis of all goods, and is the necessary source and condi-

tion of every human activity and of all society. Most people regard life as something sacred and hold that no one may dispose of it at will, but be-lievers see in life something greater, namely, a gift of God's love, which they are called upon to preserve and make fruitful (…) It is necessary to state firmly that nothing and no one can in any way permit the killing of an innocent human being, whether a fetus or an embryo, an infant or an adult, an old person, or one suffering from an incurable disease, or a person who is dying. Furthermore, no one is per-mitted to ask for this act of killing, either for himself or herself or for another person entrust-ed to his or her care, nor can he or she consent to it, either explicitly or implicitly. Also no au-thority can legitimately recommend or permit such an action. For it is a question of the viola-tion of the divine law, an offense against the dig-nity of the human person, a crime against life, and an attack on humanity.

It may happen that, by reason of pro-longed and barely tolerable pain, for deeply per-sonal or other reasons, people may be led to be-lieve that they can legitimately ask for death or obtain it for others. Although in these cases the guilt of the individual may be reduced or com-pletely absent, nevertheless the error of judg-ment into which the conscience falls, perhaps in good faith, does not change the nature of this act of killing, which will always be in itself some-thing to be rejected.

The plea of gravely ill person who some-times asks for death is not to be understood as implying a true desire for euthanasia; in fact, it is almost always a case of an anguished plea for help and love. What a sick person needs, besides medical care, is love, the human and supernatu-ral warmth with which the sick person can and ought to be surrounded by all those close to him or her, parents and children, doctors and nurs-es”.

Q. How do we explain dreams and the Spirit World ?

A. We can witness the spirit world in our dreams. Often times we are out of our bodies and in the spirit world while dreaming. We can witness the dead and some of the powers of that world. Sometimes, a person can witness the spirits of deceased friends and family members. And the spirits of living people as well. An angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream to tell him that the child was of the Holy Spirit and not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife. Mathew 1:20. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. Nightmares have demonic influence. The devil tempts the recovering alcoholic by putting a can of beer in his or her hand in a dream. What we are dealing with is a complex hidden battle between us and demonic forces on a sub-conscious and unconscious level in our dreams. They prey on our weaknesses.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eucharistic Prayer II is a popular choice for Mass since it is both simple in structure and short. It is written with a pref-ace, which is the section after the dialogue “The Lord be with you . . . Lift up your hearts . . . Let us give thanks,” which in-troduces all the Eucharistic Prayers. The preface states the rea-son for the eucharistic assembly on that occasion, and there are dozens of them covering almost every imaginable gathering for prayer, some specific to feasts, others for Masses for the dead or for other needs. The preface attached to the second Eucharis-tic Prayer may be dropped in favor of a more appropriate choice, especially one of the prefaces for weekdays. The Gen-eral Instruction of the Roman Missal says that Eucharistic Prayer II is best suited for weekdays or “special circumstanc-es.” In practice, however, it has become the common Sunday prayer because of its brevity and its comfortable familiarity. It also includes an optional phrase for adding the name of a de-ceased person remembered in the Mass, and therefore is often prayed at funerals. Article 50 of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy specified that the rites are to be simplified and restored “to the vigor they had in the tradition of the Fathers.” The re-birth of this ancient Roman prayer is a worthy response to this call.
