St. Vincent de Paul Society 10/22/17 = 377.00

In this Sunday’s Gospel we find the truth that loving God isn’t merely a matter of fervor in our hearts, but that it must be expressed in doing good for the sake of others.

This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to show that we indeed love our neighbors by assisting many families, providing help with food, utilities and rent bills, etc. As always, we thank you for your continued generosity.

Thank you for your generosity to our parish. Please realize how important it is that you use your envelopes and that you “make-up” your weekly contribution when you are not present at Mass for a particular weekend. We appreciate all that you do for our parish.

Dear Parishioners, We are getting closer to the end of the Liturgical Year and we can detect subtle shifts in the tone of the readings. We’ve been reading from Chapter 22 in Matthew’s Gospel which contains the stories of the wedding feast (the one that the invited guests would not come to), last week’s reading of the taxes (render unto Caesar what is Ceasar’s), then the question about the resurrection when seven brothers had married the same woman, followed by this weekend’s Gospel reading from Matthew 22:39-40 contains what we call teaching on “The Greatest Commandment”; although we won’t hear them in Church chapter 22 concludes with Jesus asking the question if the Messiah was David’s son then why would David have referred to Him as Lord. What Jesus is doing is teaching us about the Kingdom of God, but we are also witnessing so many conflicts people have with Jesus and His teaching. The last three weeks of the Liturgical Year will shift again, focusing more deeply on the Four Last Things… Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell. So this week and next week are opportunities to contemplate how faithful we are as God’s disciples, doing the work He has charged us with, loving God above all else and our neighbor as our very self. The Gospel paired with the first reading from Exodus which contains the rules for how to treat resident aliens gives us a particularly relevant reflection for our contentious times. In our day we are debating immigration from all angles. Some of the debate has been disturbing, and many people from various sides have said nasty things. There is room for debate and differences among people of good will, but what we must do is to make sure that we are not sinning in the attitudes we develop or in the things that we say and do. God leaves little doubt of His view on things when He says in Exodus "You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt. You shall not wrong any widow or orphan. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry. My wrath will flare up, and I will kill you with the sword; then your own wives will be widows, and your children orphans.” Consider what Pope Benedict wrote in his article published April 8, 1986 in the German Catholic Newspa-per Deutsche Tagespost and entitled Instruction on Christian Freedom and Liberation: “The love of God that is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit includes the love of neighbor. When Jesus reminded his hearers of the first commandment, he immediately added: “And the second is like it. ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets’” (Mt 22:39–40). And Saint Paul says that love is the perfect fulfillment of the law. Love of neighbor knows no boundaries, it applies even to our enemies and persecutors. The perfection for which the disciples should strive in order to be perfect as their heavenly Father is perfect consists in love. The parable of the charitable Samaritan shows that love, if it manifests itself in a compassionate service of the neighbor, destroys the prejudices that ethnic and social groups erect against one another. The letters of Saint Paul show in an inexhaustible fullness the dispositions that are characteristic of Christian charity. By its nature, Christian charity stems unencumbered and all-embracing from the love of Christ who gave his life for us: “Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another” (Jn 13:34). That is the “new commandment” that he gives his disciples.” The fact is that we must use the Greatest Commandment, Love of God and Love of Neighbor, as the first and final filter of what we say and do. First Filter meaning that I must screen everything I hear and think, and the opinions I form as a result by the Greatest Commandment, “is this reflecting the love of God and neighbor in my life.” Our Final Filter is a filter on my actions… are my ac-tions, the things I am saying and doing the best expression of my love for God and my neighbor? Discipleship is hard work. I don’t necessarily do that work because I want to, or have to, but instead, I do it because I love God. Father Chris

Mission Statement Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish

Lawrence ~ Methuen

Our Lady of Good Counsel is a diverse multi-cultural parish serving the Catholic community

of Methuen and Lawrence. We are committed to building a community of faith intent upon God, in unity of mind and heart. We are a family of believers, joined by our Baptism, and nurtured by the Eucharist. As children of God, we endeav-or to bring the love of Christ to all we meet. We are com-mitted to be the Body of Christ, rooted in the tradition of the Catholic Church. Together we worship and praise our God. Guided by prayer and the counsel of the Blessed Mother, we minister to the community through faith for-mation, fellowship, and service. With diligence, compas-sion, and love we endeavor to help others come to know and love Jesus. Empowered by grace, constant in our mission, we strive to be led by the Holy Spirit.

The Increased Offertory Campaign: PROGRAM BEGINS THIS WEEK

This week you will receive another letter from Father Chris. You will be asked to consider a specific increase to your regu-lar parish giving. Please pray about this request. The Increased Offertory Cam-paign is a program about celebrating our blessings, about giving back to God with a grateful heart, and about strengthening the future of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish. While this particular request comes in the form of financial commitment, other op-portunities to practice stewardship pre-sent themselves on a daily basis. You could commit a portion of your time and ability to the Increased Offertory Cam-paign as a Parish Advocate. To find out more about this possibility, call the Parish Office at 978-686-3984 or join us at the Parish Advocate training and Assignment meeting on Wednesday, November 1st at 7 pm in the Parish Office. Our current weekly offertory is approxi-mately $5,000. In response to the In-creased Offertory Campaign, our goal is to increase this to $6,000. Program Advocate Orientation Meeting:

November 1, 2017 at 7 pm Stewardship Link: 2 Corinthians 8:12,15 “For if the eagerness is there, it is ac-ceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have… As is written: ‘Whoever had much did not have more, and whoever had little did not have less.’” Electronic Giving You can make all of your contributions to Our Lady of Good Counsel via automatic payment from your checking account or credit card—just as you may do now with your household bills. Please contact the parish office at 978-686-3984 to receive more information.
