Una Fe puesta en la Practica

El evangelio de este domingo comienza con una petición concreta de los apóstoles. “Auméntanos la fe.” Esta petición se da en un contexto en que Jesús previene a sus discípulos de no ser ocasión de pecado o tropiezo para los pequeños, y da algunas recomendaciones sobre el perdón.

Si nos vamos más atrás, podemos ver a Jesús dedicado de tiempo completo a instruir a sus discípulos que advierte sobre la seriedad y los riesgos de seguirlo, que enseña a orar, que previene contra la hipocresía y la levadura de los fariseos, que advierte sobre el peligro de las riquezas, que insiste en la misericordia y el perdón. Muchas han sido las recomendaciones y exigencias de Jesús a sus discípulos desde que tomó la determinación de subir a Jerusalén. Los discípulos se sienten limitados, con muy pocos recursos y con necesidad de tener más fe. Por eso su petición. Lo curiosos es que Jesús no responde a esta petición de manera directa sino con una oración condicional, con la comparación: “Si tuvieran fe, aunque fuera tan pequeña como una semilla de mostaza, podrían decir a ese árbol frondoso: ‘Arráncate de raíz y plántate en el mar, y los obedecería.’” Lo que parece decir Jesús es que el asunto de fondo no es tener más o menos fe sino tener una fe firme. Aunque esta sea pequeña. Dios se compromete con nosotros, nos da su amor y el don de la fe; pero quiere que sea una fe comprometidas, una fe puesta en práctica. Para ejemplificar esto, Jesús utiliza la imagen del criado laborioso que cumple su jornada de trabajo. Así como se aprende amar en el ejercicio del amor, la fe se aumenta o fortalece al ponerla en práctica: al hacer todo aquello que Jesús he enseñado con su vida.

Jesús no quiere terminar esta instrucción sin tratar el tema de la gratuidad de la fe. La comparación parece dura: “¿Tendrá acaso que mostrarse agradecido (el amo) con el siervo, porque este cumplió con su obligación?”. Hay una invitación a hacer las cosas con humildad sin esperar nada a cambio; a reconocer que la fe es ante todo un don y que la capacidad de vivir la fe, de cumplir lo mandado, no es sino gracia. Por eso Jesús termina: “Cuando hayan cumplido todo lo que se les mando, digan: ‘No somos más que siervos, solo hemos hecho lo que teníamos que hacer.’”

A Faith put into Practice This Sunday's gospel begins with a concrete request from the apostles. “Increase our faith.” This request is given in a context in which Jesus warns his disciples not to be the occasion of sin or stumbling block for the little ones and gives some recommendations on forgiveness.

If we go further back, we can see Jesus dedicated full-time to instruct his disciples who warns about the seriousness and risks of following him, that he teaches to pray, that prevents against hypocrisy and the leaven of the Pharisees, who warns about the danger of riches, which insists on mercy and forgiveness. Many have been the recommendations and demands of Jesus to his disciples since he determined to go up to Jerusalem. The disciples feel limited, with very few resources and in need of having more faith. This is why they make this request. The funny thing is that Jesus does not respond to this request directly but with a conditional sentence, with the comparison: “If they had faith, even if it was as small as a mustard seed, they could say to that mulberry tree: ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. '” What Jesus seems to say is that the bottom line is not to have more or less faith but to have firm faith. Although this is small. God commits to us, gives us his love and the gift of faith; but he wants it to be a committed faith, a faith put into practice. To exemplify this, Jesus uses the image of the hardworking servant who fulfills his workday. Just as you learn to love in the exercise of love, faith is increased or strengthened by putting it into practice: by doing everything that Jesus has taught with your life.

Jesus does not want to finish this instruction without addressing the issue of faith. The comparison seems hard: "Will he have to be grateful (the master) with the servant, because he fulfilled his obligation?" There is an invitation to do things with humility without expecting anything in return; to recognize that faith is first and foremost a gift and that the ability to live faith, to fulfill what is commanded, is nothing but grace. That is why Jesus ends: “When you have accomplished all that was commanded, say: ‘We are but servants, we have only done what we had to do.’”

On the day that would have been his 27th anniversary of being elected Pope, Benedict XVI honored the memory of his successor, John Paul II during the Angelus prayer, recalling his influence to both Christians and non-Christians. "On a day like today" the Pope told pilgrims gathered in St. Peter‘s Square, "the Lord called Cardinal Karol Wojtyla, archbishop of Krakow, to succeed John Paul I, who died just over a month after being elected." Benedict recalled that, "John Paul II, 'who came from a far country,' was recognized as a moral authority even by many non-Christians and non-believers, as was clear from the many moving expressions of affection on the occasion of his illness and of profound condolence after his death.” “At his tomb in the Vatican Grottoes,” the Pope said, “the pilgrimage of the faithful continues uninterrupted, and this too constitutes an eloquent sign of how much the beloved John Paul II entered into people's hearts." He continued, saying that, "We could define John Paul II as a Pope completely consecrated to Christ through Mary, as was clear from his motto, 'Totus tuus.'“ “He was elected in the heart of the month of the Rosary and the Rosary he often held in his hands became one of the symbols of his pontificate." Speaking on the nature and beauty of the Rosary itself, the Holy Father explained that, "The Rosary does not run counter to meditation on the Word of God and to liturgical prayer, rather it represents their natural and ideal complement, especially as a form of preparation and thanksgiving for Eucharistic celebration.” “Christ, encountered in the Gospel and the Sacrament, is also contemplated with Mary in the various monuments of His life, thanks to the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries." "Contemplative and missionary”, the Pope said; “this was the beloved John Paul II. He achieved this thanks to his intimate bond with God, daily nourished by the Eucharist and by prolonged periods of prayer.” "At the moment of the Angelus, which was so dear to him," the Holy Father concluded, "it is a pleasure and a duty to remember him on this anniversary, renewing our thanks to God for having given the Church and the world such a worthy successor of the Apostle Peter. May the Virgin help us treasure his precious heritage."

San Juan Pablo II & el Rosario

"El Rosario es mi oración preferida. Oración maravillosa en su sencillez y en su profundidad. En esta oración repetimos muchas veces las palabras que la Virgen María escuchó de boca del ángel y de su prima Isabel. A estas palabras se asocia toda la Iglesia.

Se puede decir que el Rosario es, en cierto modo, una oración-comentario del último capítulo de la Constitución "Lumen Gentium" del Vaticano II, capítulo que trata de la admirable presencia de la Madre de Dios en el misterio de Cristo y de la Iglesia. Sobre el fondo de las palabras "Dios te salve, María", pasan ante los ojos del que las reza los principales episodios de la vida de Cristo, con sus misterios gozosos, dolorosos y gloriosos, que nos hacen entrar en comunión con Cristo, podríamos decir, a través del corazón de su Madre.

Nuestro corazón puede encerrar en estas decenas del Rosario todos los hechos que componen la vida de cada individuo, de cada familia, de cada nación, de la Iglesia y de la humanidad: los acontecimientos personales y los del prójimo y, de modo particular, de los que más queremos. Así, la sencilla oración del Rosario late al ritmo de la vida humana".

Permanent Deacon Candidate

Last Tuesday, October 1st, at the parish of St Peter the Apostle in Parsippany, our Deacon Candidate, Gilberto Martinez, was

accepted into the ministry of the Acolyte by Bishop Arthur Serratelli as part of his formation into the diaconate. Gilberto (Gil) has been studying at the seminary of the Immaculate

Conception at Seton Hall University for the last four years as part of his diaconate formation. The ministry of the Acolyte

brings him closer to his diakonia (service) ministry. Let us keep him and his family in our prayers so that he and his group will

continue his formation and reach ordination as Permanent Deacon next summer and so that he will continue to receive the

support from his family and his parish, Our Lady of Fatima.

Los adultos en el grupo de R.I.C.A. empezaran sus clases en Octubre 18, esta semana se comunicaran con ustedes las personas a cargo de esta clase.

Candidato a Diacono Permanente

El pasado 1o de Octubre, en la Parroquia de St. Peter the Apostle, en Parsippany, nuestro candidato al diaconado, Gilberto

Martinez, recibio el ministerio del acolitado, por el Obispo Arturo Serratelli, como parte de la formación hacia al diaconado.

Gilberto se ha estado preparando en el seminario de la Inmaculada Concepcion de la universidad de Seton Hall por los últimos 4 años en su formación para el diaconado. El ministerio

de Acolitado lo acerca más a este ministerio de diakonia (servicio). Tengamos presente en nuestras oraciones a este

servidor y su familia para que él se mantenga firme en su formación y llegar a su ordenación como Diacono Permanente el

próximo verano y que nunca falte el apoyo de su familia y su parroquia, Nuestra Señora de Fatima.
