NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary This feast is a very old so-lemnity in the church. It has been celebrated throughout the church from the sixth century on. Originally cele-brated in the East, the an-cient title is the Dormition of Mary, or the Falling Asleep of Mary. The earliest writing we find of this feast is from the fourth century and it is written in the voice of St. John, whom Jesus entrusted Mary to the care of as he hung upon the cross.
The teaching is that Mary was assumed into heaven after her "falling asleep in the Lord" before her body suffered any decay. This doctrine of the church--even though the church has been celebrating this belief for centuries--was not declared a dogma until November 1, 1950 by Pope Pius XII. While the Eastern Orthodox call this event the "dormition," the Roman Catholic Church calls it the Assumption. Roman Catholicism is silent on the details of the Assumption. Therefore, Roman Catholics legitimately can believe that Mary did not die before the Assumption. The holy day has always been celebrated in the church on August 15.
La Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María Esta fiesta es una solemnidad muy antigua en la Iglesia. Se ha celebrado en toda la Iglesia desde el siglo sexto en ade-lante. Originalmente celebrado en el este, el título antiguo es la Dormición de María, o el Dor-mir que cae de María. La escri-tura más antigua que encontra-mos de esta fiesta es del siglo IV y está escrita con la voz de San Juan, a quien Jesús confió a María mientras colgaba en la cruz. Show others the way to God
God has called all of us to follow him but we are also called to lead. Aiding another’s spiritual growth in simple ways can lead others to Christ.
Be on the watch. Ask God to reveal to you those who don’t know him. Record their names and commit to praying for them daily.
Go to Mass together. Inviting a fr iend or someone seeking a spiritual home to attend Sunday Mass with you is a great way to spend time together and show commitment to the faith.
Offer prayer cards. Promote prayer and a devotion to the saints by sending an occasional prayer card fea-turing a saint relevant to his or her life issues.
Build bridges. Spend time with those seeking God. Show them what a life with him looks like. Invite seekers to dinner, go for coffee, listen to their prob-lems. In other words, be a friend.
Share his love. God’s love breaks down barriers and removes prejudices. Act with love toward others. A little kindness may open the door for the Gospel.

Dios llama a cada uno de nosotros para que lo siga-mos, pero también nos llama a que guiemos. Al ayudar con sencillez el crecimiento espiritual de otra persona puede conducir a los demás hasta Dios.
Preste atención. Pida a Dios que le permita descu-brir a quienes no lo conocen. Anote sus nombres y comprométase a rezar por ellos a diario.
Vayan juntos a misa. Invitar a un amigo o a algui-en que busca un hogar espiritual a que vaya con usted a la misa dominical es una forma estupenda de pasar tiempo juntos y de mostrar su compromiso con la fe.
Ofrezca tarjetas de oración. Promueva la oración y la devoción a los santos enviando de vez en cuando una tarjeta de oración relativa a la situación de cada uno.
Tienda puentes. Pase tiempo con los que buscan a Dios. Muéstreles cómo es la vida con Dios. Invíte-los a cenar, vayan a tomar café, escuche sus prob-lemas. En otras palabras, sea su amigo.
Comparta su amor. El amor de Dios destruye las barreras y elimina los prejuicios. Trate a los demás con amor. Un poco de bondad puede abrir la puerta al Evangelio.

church will receive the other half. This is a small fun
way for the parish to raise money.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEP-ER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE August 12, 2018 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Have you ever approached a hushed group and were certain they were talking about you? It's an uncom-fortable feeling to catch people murmuring about what you did, said, or didn't do. It breeds division and ex-clusion. In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to just the opposite. The reading opens with the crowds "murmuring" their doubts about Jesus after he has proclaimed himself the Bread of Life. "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph ? how can he say 'I have come down from heaven'?" In his response, Jesus brings up the Israelites and the manna God brought them in the desert. If you turn back to the story in Exodus, you'll see another similar word: murmuring. As the going got tough, the Israel-ites doubted Moses and God's plan to protect and care for them as a chosen people. Here, Jesus proposes a difficult theological concept. Jesus himself is "the liv-ing bread" and "flesh for the life of the world." This is not an exclusive concept. "Everyone who lis-tens to my Father and learns from him comes to me." Why? Because "the Father who sent me draw[s] him." The next time you're at Mass, take a few moments to watch the communion line. Young and old, families and singles, diverse races and cultures and stories ? we are all drawn to the Eucharistic table. Catholic doctrine may require faith, but it is a faith possible for anyone who seeks truth. Christianity does not hide behind locked doors in an exclusive clubhouse, whis-pering behind the backs of nonbelievers. Jesus com-pels us to share the love of God the Father for his chil-dren, that we one day be joined with Him and "live forever."
MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR EN-TENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ES-CRITURA (Gospel Meditation) 12 de Agosto de 2018. 19º Domingo del Tiempo Or-dinario Los judíos murmuraban porque Jesús había dicho: "Yo soy el pan que ha bajado del cielo". Y decían: Conocemos a su padre y a su madre, ¿no es cierto? Él no es sino Jesús, el hijo de José, ¿Cómo puede decir que ha bajado del cielo". (Juan 6:41-42). En este Evangelio, seguimos leyendo el discurso del pan de vida. Jesús mismo nos enseña el misterio de que él es el Pan de vida. Él es el único que se da de sí mismo a nosotros para darnos vida eterna. Sin embargo, ante la falta de fe de los que murmuraban ya que dicen saber el origen de su familia, conocían a sus padres y a sus amigos. Se dejaban llevar por la simple apariencia de la familia, sabían que era hijo de José y de María. Ellos, no veían más allá, no escuchaban que Jesús hablaba de su Padre del cielo. ¡Estaban ciegos y sor-dos a la gracia de Dios!
En nuestra vida, en nuestro caminar como discípulos de Jesús. ¿En que se basa nuestra fe, cómo la alimen-tamos? ¿Qué nos atrae de Él, de sus enseñanzas? "En consecuencia, toda la celebración litúrgica, por ser obra de Cristo sacerdote y de su Cuerpo, que es la Ig-lesia, es acción sagrada por excelencia, cuya eficacia, con el mismo título y en el mismo grado, no la iguala ninguna otra acción de la Iglesia. Jesús es el Pan de vida". (Vaticano II, Sacrosanctum Concilium 7). Sin embargo, el reto es no criticar o murmurar en contra de la Iglesia y su tradición apostólica. Creer y vivir el misterio del pan de vida, es ser como Jesús, darse sin medida a los que lo necesiten.
¿Por qué creen los católicos que la Iglesia es apostólica? Decimos que la Iglesia es “apostólica” porque está fundada sobre los Apóstoles a los que Jesús designó para que continuaran su misión. Antes de ascender al cielo, Jesús encargó a los Apóstoles que bautizaran y que predicaran el Evangelio en su nombre (Mateo 28:19-20). Los apóstoles ordenaron a otras personas para que continuaran esta misión y ellos ordenaron a ot-ros. La fe católica ha sido preservada y trans-mitida hasta nosotros desde los Apóstoles me-diante sus sucesores, nuestros obispos, cuyo “linaje sacerdotal” se remonta a los Apóstoles.
Why do Catholics believe the church is Ap-ostolic? We call the Church, “Apostolic,” because it is founded on the Apostles whom Jesus appoint-ed to carry on his work. Before he ascended, Jesus commissioned the Apostles to baptize and preach the Gospel in his name (Matthew 28:19-20). The Apostles ordained others to carry on this mission, and they ordained oth-ers. The Catholic faith has been preserved and handed down to us from the Apostles through their successors, our bishops, who can trace their “priestly lineage” back to the Apostles.
