Mass Intentions Message from Our Pastor

Our second installment is from Adrienne: A different Camino experience… My Camino experience was miserable. I began the first day of walking to climb the Pyrenees Mountains. The first four hours were beautiful. Walking through pastures amid herds of horses and sheep, I felt a great deal of peace. Stone fountains quenched my thirst along the way. I drank from grottos and streams. I was happy. By hour 11, I lay down in the middle of the forest and gave up. The sun was be-ginning to set, and I didn’t relish the thought of walking through the forest in darkness. I had run out of water and there were no sources to be found. If it hadn’t been for my sister who threatened to stop walking if I didn’t get up, I would have stayed put. So I got up and we trudged along for 3 more hours to our destination. The next day I felt aches and pains and wrote them off, because, who wouldn’t? Fourteen hours of hiking over mountains I suspect would give any unseasoned hiker aches and pains. Each day after that, I was finding it increasingly difficult to walk and my frustration was mounting quickly. The brunt of the problem lay in that I could not move my legs well. I kept waking up throughout the night with pain in my legs and I kept writing it off as part of the Camino process. It wasn’t. I met two doctors who informed me that I had pulled a muscle that first day of walking and should have rested for 3 days. Since I did not, I had subsequently torn 8 muscles in my legs and, should I continue, would very likely fracture my femur and require surgery. I took the news hard. Why had this happened to me? Staying behind while my sisters continued walking the next day was even harder. I took a bus to the next town. Arriving at a hostel which wouldn’t open for another 2 hours, I sat down on the sidewalk of this small, seemingly, deserted village and resolved to wait until it opened. Before I knew it, blood came pouring from my nose and mouth. I tried and failed to get air. I looked frantically down the sidewalk for anyone and saw that I was alone. Unable to scream, I silently coughed and choked, my shirt and pants drenched in blood. I believed I would die, the pain in my lungs increasing as I struggled to breathe. Distantly, I heard a woman scream and seconds later I saw a man above me who knelt down and held me as he cleaned my face with a towel. The bleeding slowed and then stopped. “You’ll be alright. You’ll be al-right” he kept repeating. I saw him try to keep the fear on his face from me. After losing what I learned was about a pint and a half of blood, I fainted and woke up in an ambulance. I was told I had had a hemorrhage caused by the elevation and the heat. I mentioned the pain in my legs and, after a quick exam, the doctors told me my Camino was over. After a tearful goodbye to my sisters, I got on a plane. I was preoccupied with my thoughts. What was the significance of this journey? Was this a complete waste? I remembered the words of a pilgrim I had met who had walked this Camino 7 times: You need to walk for the right reason. If you don’t, you’ll never make it. Why had I done this walk? I knew all along, I did it only because my sisters had asked me to and I didn’t want to miss this opportunity to bond with them in what might be the last time because I was leaving for college. That was the sole reason. It wasn’t a spiritual journey for me. It was a touristic one. I hadn’t even prayed much on the walk. I have since decided to go back to Spain and begin again with faith in my heart.

“Closeness to Christ in
silence and contemplation does not distance us from our contemporaries but, on
the contrary, makes us attentive and open to
human joy and distress, broadening our hearts on a global scale. It unites us
with our brothers and sisters in humanity,
particularly with children, who are the Lord’s dearly
beloved. Through Adoration, the Christian greatly
contributes to the radical transformation of the world,
according to St. John Paul II.”
Santo Juan Pablo II "
God our Father, in your wise and loving providence
you raised up St. John Paul II as shepherd and universal father of your pilgrim Church on earth.
Through him you called your Church to walk in justice,
to taste your mercy, and to face in worship the Son whose fiery rays illumine the splendor and dignity of
each human life.
...you give to be a blessing.”
