BAPTISM AT MT. CARMEL CHURCH Parents must be contributing members, regularly attending weekly Mass, for at least 6 months. In preparation for the sacrament, a one-hour class for parents must be completed prior to the baptism. MARRIAGE ARRANGEMENTS should be made with the pastor at least six months to one year before the proposed wedding date. One member of the couple must be a registered, practicing member and contributor of record at Mt. Carmel for at least six months. Couples sharing the same abode will be asked to live separately prior to their marriage.

Religious Education

Religious Education starts on September 10th - Grades 1-11 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) classes are one dimen-

sion of faith formation and religious education for Catholic students

in grades 1 – 11. The program teaches Catholic history and doctrine,

fosters community, and prepares students for Christian service. This

program is available to all who do not receive religious education

classes on a regular basis at a Catholic School. As a reminder,

receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion (grade 2) requires two

years of faith formation. The Sacrament of Confirmation (grades 9-

11) is a three year faith formation.

Elementary grades are 1st to 6th Grade & meet on Sundays, 11:00 -

11:50 a.m.

Middle School & High School grades meet on Sundays from 6:30-

8:00 p.m.

Volunteers needed for Religious Education

There are several opportunities to share your talents and faith with

the Religious Education program at Mt. Carmel Parish. Volunteers

are needed to teach grades 3 and 4 class. There will be training ses-

sions provided. Each of us, both as individuals and as a parish com-

munity, are called to bear witness to the Good News through our

words and actions. Consider sharing your faith. For more informa-

Catholic Replies: re Tai Chi & Girl Scouts of America by James J. Drummey

Q. Getting old comes with a lot of aches and pains, but I recently picked up a book on Tai Chi. The stretching exercises seem okay, but

the book recommends a system of breathing and meditation, etc. Will this conflict in any way with my Catholic beliefs? — D.H., Iowa.

A. Sometimes described as “meditation in motion,” Tai Chi was originally developed in ancient China for self-defense, but is now used

as a form of exercise for reducing stress and improving health. It is a system of gentle physical movements, performed in a slow and

graceful manner, that keeps the body in constant motion. The movements are coordinated with breathing to help a person achieve an

inner calm.

Dr. Roger Jahnke, a practitioner of Oriental medicine and author of a book on Tai Chi entitled The Healer Within, says that Eastern

wisdom speaks of the body’s ability to heal itself. He contends that normal exercise produces chemicals that allow muscles damaged by

the exercise to heal. But he says that the movements of Tai Chi are so gentle that the muscle isn’t damaged, and the chemicals produced

can be used to help other parts of the body. He claims that Tai Chi healed a man who had an incurable brain cancer.

Jahnke is also author of The Healing Promise of Qi, which promotes the healing of back and joint pain. “Tai Chi and Qigong literally

means life force and mastery,” says a description of his books. “Long kept as a carefully guarded secret from the Chinese public, Dr.

Jahnke brings it to the west as a health enhancing self-improvement program. Ancient tools for self-improvement and a safe, gentle, and

proven approach to treating pain and disease.”

The problem with these “life force” or “life energy” techniques is that they promote healing through human efforts and not through

divine power. In a 2009 document about a related technique known as Reiki (Guidelines for Evaluating Reiki as an Alternative Ther-

apy), the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Doctrine said that some of Reiki’s teachers “argue that it is not the Reiki practitioner personally

who effects the healing, but the Reiki energy directed by the divine consciousness. Nevertheless, the fact remains that for Christians the

access to divine healing is by prayer to Christ as Lord.”

The bishops said that “some practitioners attempt to Christianize Reiki by adding a prayer to Christ, but this does not affect the essen-

tial nature of Reiki. For these reasons, Reiki and other similar therapeutic techniques cannot be identified with what Christians call heal-

ing by divine grace.” They cautioned that “a Catholic who puts his or her trust in Reiki [or Tai Chi] would be operating in the realm of

superstition, the no-man’s-land that is neither faith nor science. Superstition corrupts one’s worship of God by turning one’s religious

feeling and practice in a false direction. While sometimes people fall into superstition through ignorance, it is the responsibility of all

who teach in the name of the Church to eliminate such ignorance as much as possible.”

It seems to us that one could use stretching exercises to help alleviate aches and pains without getting into superstition or into the

shadowy world of the New Age Movement.

Q. I was surprised to learn at our last Catholic Daughters of the Americas meeting that our parish Catholic school has a Girl Scouts of

America troop. I understand that the values taught by the current Girl Scout leadership are not the values of the Catholic faith. Is there

an alternative to the Girl Scouts for our young Catholic girls? — R.D., Pennsylvania.

A. While there are local Girl Scout troops that are headed by persons promoting the values traditionally associated with scouting, the

national leadership of the GSA is involved in promoting contraception, abortion, and gender ideology through its ties with Planned Par-

enthood and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). Girl Scouts USA belongs to WAGGGS and pays an

annual membership fee of $1.8 million, while WAGGGS partners with International Planned Parenthood and advocates for contracep-

tion and abortion.

GSA also holds up as role models for young girls Margaret Sanger, Betty Friedan, and Gloria Steinem, all of whom have crusaded for

contraception and abortion, and in 2013 it shared a recommendation for “Woman of the Year” of pro-abortion activist Wendy Davis of

Texas. It also promoted as a woman of “courage, confidence, and character” former pro-abortion Secretary of Health and Human Ser-

vices Kathleen Sebelius.

There are many outstanding female role models who are pro-life, but apparently they would be frowned upon by the GSA.

When he cut ties with the Girl Scouts in 2016, Archbishop Robert Carlson of St. Louis said that “Girl Scouts is exhibiting a troubling

pattern of behavior, and it is clear to me that as they move in the ways of the world it is becoming increasingly incompatible with our

Catholic values.” Similar concerns have been voiced by Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, Mo.

Parents seeking alternatives for their daughters can turn to American Heritage Girls, which describes itself as “the premier national

character development organization for girls ages 5 to 18 that embraces Christian values and encourages family involvement.” You can

SANCTUARY RENOVATION:

PHASE I COMPLETE; PHASE II TO FOLLOW

Our new altar is in (Phase I) and looks beautiful (the adoring angels will be in next week, with some additional altar lighting).

Our parish set aside $130,000 of parish funds for the altar fabrica-

tion, the total cost of which was $156,000. The remaining balance

($26,000) has been paid through individual donations.

Individual donations at this time total $77,260. If we subtract

$26,000 for Phase I (altar fabrication), that leaves us with $51,260

for Phase II.

The estimated cost for Phase II is $140,000. That means we need another $88,740 to pay for Phase II. We ask that people

who may have been waiting to donate toward the project wait no

longer. Here are estimated costs of the artwork/painting to be done,

which make up most of the cost of Phase II:

- painting two big murals at sides of altar: $20,000 each*

- painting the mural behind the altar (angels): $10,000*

- painting ten Carmelite saints: $5000 each

*One can donate part of the funds needed for these

paintings; any donation is most welcome!

And the estimated cost of removing the two statues in the sanc-

tuary (St. Francis and St. Catherine of Siena, patron saints of Italy)

and the marble backdrops, and mounting them on columns, is

$10,800.

Let us pray for the intercession of the great Italian artist, Bl. Fra

Angelico, that this project may give glory to God & Our Lady of

Mount Carmel!

Troops of St. George 2017-2018

The Kenosha Troops of St George is kicking off its

fifth year with a sign-up on September 22nd. The

Troops of Saint George is a

father and son group that aims to use the outdoors as

our canvas and the sacraments as our path to light the

way for the formation of Holy Catholic men and

boys. The troop is for fathers with sons from 1st -

9th grade interested in camping, canoeing, hiking, fish-

ing and other outdoor activities.
