Dear good people of Our Lady, As we enter Autumn the weather is beautiful, farmers are harvesting their fields and we are on the verge of an explosion of color in the forests. As the earth prepares for its 5-month slumber that is winter, the readings at Sunday Mass are focused more and more on the Kingdom of God (or Kingdom of Heaven if you prefer). With this in mind, I would like to ask a seemingly simple question. When it comes to heaven or the kingdom, how do you enter it? I have asked this question of several hundred adults over the past two decades and the response is nearly universal – be a good person, don’t do bad things, etc. While these are vague answers, what is apparent to most Christians, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, is that entering the Kingdom of God is directly tied to one’s moral behavior. At least that is how entering the Kingdom is initially viewed. When asking if specific people who have committed crimes would be excluded, then the responses typically turned toward reconciliation. The offender would need to be sorry and ask for forgiveness. It is only when specific heinous acts such a violent abuse or murder occur that people then become unsure of how to respond. In the gospel, Jesus dismisses the first line of response outright by pointing out to the chief priests and the elders that the lowest in their eyes, tax collec-tors and prostitutes, were entering the Kingdom ahead of them. This revelation is tremendously damaging to anyone who wishes to believe that their self-righteousness puts them above anyone, or that the lack of this righteousness would lead that person to be cast out. In fact, it was those who adhered most devotedly to the letter of the Mosaic Law that were being criti-cized. The statement Jesus issues next addresses the second, more refined response of the need for recon-ciliation. Sin is not bad because it makes God angry. Sin is bad because it doesn’t work. Sin is a failed at-tempt on the part of the sinner to find joy and meaning in a behavior that brings internal division within the sinner him/her self, division within their relationship with God, and their relationship with all other people.
Since the compassion and mercy of God on display in the Christ is, in fact, the point of the incarnation, Jesus delights in the repentance of sinners. The story of the prodigal son and the parable of the lost sheep are prime examples of this. Regardless of who sins, how they sin, how of-ten they sin, we remain God’s daughters and sons. God’s desire is for us to use the Law, the teachings of the Church, to help direct us to conversion and assist us in helping others to conversion. Neither the Church, nor her teachings, should ever be used as a means to separate people from God or the worship-ping community. The Kingdom (already here) is predicated on the truth that Christ calls us to be one body. No one is expendable, yet no one is to be ex-cluded from accountability for their actions. Jesus in no way endorses harmful behavior that is sin, but also sees healing from its wounds as always possible. We are works in progress to be sure. The com-passion Jesus offers us is a needed help to our growth, and it is this compassion we need to learn to share with those who bring injury to us. Have a blessed week! Blessings Revealed – This largely parish-based con-temporary Christian music group will be performing on Saturday October 3rd at 7:00 p.m. on the parking lot of Surdyke Motor Sports on Highway 61 across from Mercy Jefferson Hospital. Concessions will be available (Hotdogs, snacks, and soft drinks). They have performed each year for the past few years. Their performance is top-notch and will delight all who have the time to join us.

Gospel - Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you (Matthew 21:28-32).

The Our Lady Council of the Knights of Colum-bus Developmental Disabilities Drive, commonly called the “Tootsie Roll Drive”, will take place the weekend of October 10th & 11th. Due to the Coronavirus, we will not be collecting in our usual
manner. The state goal is $700,000.00. The proceeds of the Drive (last year we collected almost $3400) will be equally di-vided between Next Step for Life in Jefferson County, who uses it to send athletes to the Special Olympics, and to support the KC Wing for Developmentally Disabled children at Cardinal Glen-non Hospital. Under the present circumstances, both groups are in need of our support. We are going to conduct a different type of Drive this year. You will have two (2) ways to donate, any amount is appreciated: 1. There will be buckets in the back of church where you can
place your donations after Mass or at any time. Tootsie rolls will be there for you to pick up.

Our Lady Parish Council Meeting Summary – September Parish Council met on September 10, 2020. Agenda was pre-sented and minutes approved from the August 13th meeting with a correction. *Committee Reports: Youth Ministry reported that they reached out to the CYC contact person and there had been no activity in regard to sports due to COVID. Fr. Greg encour-aged the committee to reach out to Matt Collins to sustain a collaborative effort. Public Relations and School Collabora-tion Committees had nothing to report. The Picnic Committee report consisted of discussion about a raffle. A sample from another parish was presented as a sug-gestion that we might follow. In the end it was decided to have a raffle with the following prizes: a Quilt, $2500 cash and a 1/10 ounce gold coin. Cost of the tickets are 6 for $25. These could be picked up at church on weekends, distributed to school families through school packets and picked up at the parish office. No tickets will be sent through the US mail. Tickets distributed the first week of October and the drawing held on the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving. The Knights and the Ladies Auxiliary gave a $400 dollar contribution to help defer the income loss of not having a picnic. *The first draft of the first annual stewardship report for 2020 was presented and revisions suggested. The committee will create a second draft and present it to the council. *The Flow Chart of Parish Organizations under their respec-tive commissions will be sent to the parish council for the next meeting. *The policy on Non-parish Organizations being able to post information and place items in the bulletin was approved. *The council approved the resignation of Chris Parker from the parish council due to his heavy work load and family responsibilities. Thank you Chris for serving. * In regards to church envelopes and adding additional enve-lopes. Fr. Greg will write an article for the bulletin about the envelopes in our stewardship set and clarify what they are for. *The parish council members should come prepared to the next council meeting with what group or groups we have an interest in being a liaison for. As liaison the parish council member would contact the leader of an organization or com-mittee and let them know they are their contact person and would act as a conduit of communication regarding activities, concerns between their group and the parish council. * Next meeting the parish council should come prepared to discuss different option for the parish for the Christmas/Advent season. *The yellow caution tape being used to indi-cate what pews cannot be used in church will be replaced with a narrower blue ribbon. *There is a need for a President of our St. Vincent de Paul Society to replace Brenda Fischer who is resigning. The re-placement needs to be trained by December. *There is a need for a coordinator of our parish picnic to re-place Dianne Hicks whom resigned. A deep appreciation and accolades to Dianne for her service. A new chairperson needs to be named by January. Submit names to Fr. Greg for sug-gestions. Perhaps 3 couples could be co-chairs. *RCIA this year has two candidates and probably three. *Fr. Greg say he see new faces coming back slowly to Mass. 9 am Mass has the largest attendance. Next council meeting will be October 8, 2020, 6 pm at the school design center.

K of C Ladies Auxiliary Raffle Date Changes - Thank you so much to all supporters every year of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary Raffles. However, our Spring 2020 Raffle which was postponed to this fall, must be postponed again. The proceeds are earmarked to purchase a new parish Holy Water Pot and Sprinkler to replace the bent one.
