In 1978 Brian Seymour and Barry Rhodes formed B Seymour (Civil Engineering Contractors) Ltd in Hartlepool, with just 20 employees and 3 pieces of plant machinery. The company was renamed as Seymour Civil Engineering Contractors Ltd in 1989.
Within 10 years we had won our first £1m project and were working with clients like the Teesside Development Corporation on regeneration projects, many on former industrial land on both sides of the River Tees and around Hartlepool.
5 years on and our skills were being used at Derwenthaugh Cokeworks, providing heavy earthworks to transform it into the park we know today.

URBAN RENEWAL
The works involved the restoration of Sunniside Gardens in the centre of the city of Sunderland including the replacement of surface materials and street furniture, landscaping works to the gardens, removal and planting of trees, installation of a water feature, diversion of services and installation of artwork, creating a unique feature to this historic part of the city. Construction in the city centre had an immediate impact on residents and businesses fronting the
movement of materials. Particular attention was paid to liaison with the local community and businesses to ensure that any special needs were taken into account and care taken to ensure that construction activity had the minimum of impact on the local environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS
There are historical reports of flooding in the Brunton Park area for the last 100 years. Recent flooding highlighted issues with the surface water and foul sewer networks and how these interact with the Ouseburn. The solution to protect 100 properties included a variety of techniques and innovations, including;
Upsizing of over two kilometres of new surface water and foul sewers and storage facilities within the Brunton Park estate. This was accomplished
flows to the network.
Most ingeniously, the work has involved installing 380 metres of new river channel approximately parallel to the existing channel to divert the Ouseburn river away from the estate. This allowed the old river channel to be used as a new attenuation basin to store surface water flow from the estate at times of high flow and create space for the construction of a cost
and storage basin is the creation of a valuable habitat for wildlife. Elsewhere, the Brunton Park scheme has involved the construction of 300 metres of Environment Agency flood defence
A temporary bridge was positioned over the Ouseburn river for access to the Golf Course area. With the bridge in place the Ouseburn watercourse diversion could be achieved creating a SUDs channel in order to allow the upgraded surface water system to discharge during storm events. Work including bulk earthworks, gabion walls, reinstatement and landscaping in the City of Newcastle Golf Course.

This project was to construct an extension to an existing manufacturing facility and comprised of a steel framed extension to an existing manufacturing unit to house a new vertical laying up machine (VLM) for the manufacture of undersea umbilical cable systems. The building was approximately 28m by 36m by 25m high.
Structural works comprised a significant Steel Portal Framed building with external profiled sheet steel cladding and the construction of reinforced concrete support structures and pits to support production machinery. The floor slab was constructed to suit areas of high production loading of 35kN/m2.
The general ground construction consists of reinforced concrete structures supported by piling, the piling of which was designed by our specialist contractor to achieve up to 500kN working loads.
Drainage works included the surface water drainage diversion and connection to the existing storm water system. The works included installing associated services, fencing, car parking and hard landscaping.

Newland Court is a residential area in South
severe flooding arising in part from the sewerage system, with flood depths reported to be one
The flood alleviation scheme consisted of the construction of a 25 metre diameter storage tank providing 4800 cubic metres of storage. The tank allowed a reverse flow from the surcharges main sewer to be stored until such a time when the storm water could flow back into the main sewer system.
Highlights of the project included;
removed the need for temporary support to the ground and the 25m diameter and 12 m deep tank was constructed in 11 weeks.
Early engagement with the supplier enabled the manufacture and delivery of the units to be tailored to suit the programme. The storage capacity of the tank was the size of 2 Olympic swimming pools!
The use of segmental units has health and safety benefits simplifying construction and removing the need to fix reinforcement steel, fix formwork and pour concrete at height in the tank walls. 20 Properties were removed from the Flood Risk Register upon completion of the works.

Lakes Estate, Hebburn Northumbrian Water
Seymour secured a contract with Northumbrian Water to reduce the risk of flooding to 21 homes in Lakes Estate, Hebburn.
Phase 1 works included the construction of over 450 metres of rider sewers and the construction of 20 manhole chambers to address localised incapacity within the combined sewer network serving a residential area within the Hebburn area.
Phase 2 works were awarded under a separate contract taking approximately 8 months to complete. The works included the construction of a 5600m3 modular precast concrete gravity storm attenuation tank, comprising of internal half channels, benching and access manholes to alleviate surcharge within the main trunk sewer as well as 2 tunnels constructed using a trenchless pipe jack technique at 8m deep, 1.5m diameter.
The works also include landscaping and reinstatement works comprising the local removal and re-alignment of an existing bund which surrounded the playing fields plus reinstatement of field drainage and playing fields over the tank area.

PORT, HARBOUR & SEA DEFENCES
This project involved the reconstruction of the sea defences between Hartlepool and SeatonCarew.
The works in this phase involved the removal of the existing sea wall, construction of 1000 metres of new reinforced concrete wall, protection with rock armour (up to 2.5t), concrete steps and ramps, promenade footpaths and cycle ways.
A significant part of the works was within the range of tidal water. Strict segregation of public/pedestrian was created using clearly marked and fenced pedestrian areas.
A method of working was devised to allow safe working during periods of low tides. Monitoring of the sea and weather conditions was maintained to ensure that heavy
Communication was established with the sea coalers to accommodate their activities without compromising the works.

The Town Wall is a length of coast protection and flood defence structure located parallel to the Port Authority Navigable Channel on the inner approachesto Victoria Harbour.
The wall was originally built in the 1300’s and is classified as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The Town Wall structure was determined as being at increasing risk of overtopping and failure due to wave action during storm events. The design solutions provided were severely constrained by the Scheduled Ancient Monument Status of the Town Wall Structure.
The first stage of the works completed by Seymour Civil Engineering was split into 2 elements:
Element 1 Reinstatement / rebuild of 3 x 40m long groyne structures insitu concrete.Element 2 Provision of approximately 180m of new insitu concrete toe protection to the existing Town Wall structure.
The works were all within the range of tidal water. A method of working was devised to allow safe working during periods of low tides. Monitoring of the sea and weather

CLEAN WATER
WWW.SEYMOURCEC.CO.UK
Seymour CEC were instructed to carry out a major programme of work to clean and upgrade the trunk water mains and improve water quality for one million Northumbrian Water customers in the North East.
Over a period of time, harmless sediment can build up on the inside of water mains and may result in discoloured water. Although discoloured water is not harmful to health, it is not acceptable or pleasant. To deliver the programme of works Seymour utilised two techniques to clean the pipes. Ice Pigging and Typhoon Jetting.
Using the Ice Pigging technique, slushy ice is injected into the pipe and the water
the pipe walls. The dirty ice is then flushed from the water pipe and the water is sampled and put back into supply.
Using ice is much quicker and safer than other cleaning methods. It usually takes us up to three weeks to clean a 2km section of pipe using ‘pressure jetting’, it takes just a few hours to clean the same amount of pipe using ice. As well as being more cost
uses less water than other types of cleaning so it is more environmentally friendly.
