304L for food processing vessels: stainless steel for your health “For us, hygiene and ease of cleaning are crucial properties. These high requirements demand a material that is corrosion-resistant and totally inert. In order to meet these criteria, we have been using grade 304L (1.4301) for many years. Stainless Europe is one of the few suppliers who can offer us this in widths up to 2m and thicknesses up to 6mm with the guaranteed surface finish that we require to meet food industry standards.”

Ziemann-Bauer GmbH.

316L for tank containers: stainless steel for your safety “Nowadays, we are building the majority of our tank containers in the form of a cylindrical tank with a capacity of 21 to 25 cubic metres. For decades Stainless Europe’s 316L (1.4404), among other products, has proved itself to be safe for the transportation of dangerous liquids and gases. Stainless Europe’s guarantees in respect of mechanical properties and surface finish allow us to respond positively to our customers’ demanding requirements".

Van Hool nv.

304D for Beer Barrels: stainless steel for your pleasure “We derive numerous benefits from the use of Stainless Europe’s 304D in the production of beer barrels. Its biological inertness and corrosion resistance make it naturally suited to comply with food industry standards and to withstand internal and external cleaning with detergents. Its mechanical properties also give it numerous attributes. Ease of forming allows us to achieve deep draws, while still achieving the final surface smoothness levels specified by our customers. Its high strength in the cold-rolled condition is also of value in the production of chimes, which are very strong and able to withstand extreme storage conditions; from -10°C in winter to +50°C in summer.”

Portinox SA.

Our customers' points of view

INNOVATIONThe fluctuations in alloy prices, particularly nickel, have accelerated Stainless Europe’s development of new grades.

Two new offers are therefore particularly relevant:

> the duplex series, dual-phase austeno-ferritic grades, with a high chromium level and reduced nickel content.

> the 200 series, austenitic grades in which a proportion of the nickel is replaced by manganese.

Our new offers: Duplex and 200 series austenitics

Our customers' points of view

201D for drillpipe, technical and economic performance“We looked for an alternative to the traditional 304 that offered an equal level of processing performance combined with reduced cost. Our cooperation with Stainless Europe pointed us in the direction of the 201D grade, which offers similar mechanical and physical properties to the conventional 304. From now on, with the agreement of our customers, we are going to use Stainless Europes’ 201D, in particular for the production of drillpipes, in accordance with DIN 4922.”

Sergio Paparelli, Paparelli srl.

Our 200 series austeniticsIn addition to the 201 and 201LN (low carbon dedicated to cryogenics and railway carriage body structures) standards, Aperam offers the exclusive 201D, a grade with unique properties, similar in all respects to those of 304:

Pitting corrosion: with 17% chromium and a sulphur content of less than 0.002%, its pitting corrosion resistance is close to that of 304.

Crevice and general corrosion: with 4.5% nickel and the addition of 1.6% copper, its resistance to general corrosion is often close to that of 304, and its crevice corrosion resistance in acid environments is equivalent to that of a 301 grade.

Intergranular corrosion: with a carbon content of less than 0.05%, the risk of intergranular corrosion is controlled.

Our 201D also offers mechanical properties, formability and weldability comparable to 304, thus minimising your substitution costs.

Stainless Europes’ 201D is the only manganese grade in the world to be available in 2m wide.

Our Duplex familyThe duplex are dual-phase austeno-ferritic grades, combining high mechanical properties with a corrosion resistance range similar to austenitics. These adavantages provide our customers high performance alternatives in terms of purchase costs thanks to both thickness reductions and operating costs of installations.Stainless Europe offers four duplex grades: the historical DX2205, DX1803, DX2304 and lean duplex DX2202.

KARA, a range of competitive solutions

Knowledge, Performance, Accuracy and Responsibility – these are the values of our KARA brand, which unites Stainless Europe’s ferritic solutions. We have chosen for our Industry professionals, a range of solutions suited to various applications.

What is ferritic stainless steel?Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. Stainless steels are steels with a maximum of 1.2% carbon, at least 10.5% chromium and other alloying elements. Stainless steels include the Austenitics - containing nickel, and the Ferritics - generally without nickel. The absence of nickel has no impact upon the stainless steel’s resistance to the most common form of corrosion - pitting corrosion. It is the passive layer of chromium oxide which forms naturally and continuously on the stainless steel surface which provides it with lasting protection against corrosion. Consequently, it is the chromium ithin stainless steels which gives the resistance to pitting corrosion. KARA ferritics can therefore meet your corrosion needs whilst not being subject to the price variations of nickel.

for water pipes

“Since June 2007, and its homologation by the approval bodies for drinking water installations in Switzerland (SVGW) and in Germany (DVGW), the ferritic stainless grade 1.4521 (the equivalent of Stainless Europe’s K44) has become the best alternative to standard 316L for the manufacture of water pipes. The Swiss market has almost fully converted, with 1.4521 becoming de facto the new standard for this application, which represents a use of millions of metres per year. Copper and 316L have rapidly disappeared from the Swiss water pipe market.” R. Nussbaum AG.

for distillation column packing in the petrochemical industry

“FLEXITRAY® valve trays from Koch-Glitsch combine high capacity and excellent efficiency with a wide operating range. Using proprietary design techniques and a wide range of valve types, a well-designed FLEXITRAY® valve tray provides an economically attractive solution for grass-roots column construction projects. Depending on the customer’s requirements, FLEXITRAY® valve trays could be made of AISI 410S, the equivalent of the K10 from Stainless Europe.”Koch-Glitsch LP.

Martensitics, our complementary offer

The martensitic state offers a very specific metallurgical structure, obtained after heat treatment: quenching and tempering.

It confers specific properties on the material:> high hardness suitable for cutting,> a high modulus and therefore rigidity and resistance to deformation,> good resistance to abrasion and wear.

These specific characteristics are found in numerous technological applications such as hand tools, but also in everyday objects, particularly in clocks and watches, telecommunications and fashion accessories.Stainless Europe supplies as-rolled steel ready for quenching in 1,000 mm wide coils.

Our subsidiary, Services & Solutions Precision Europe, is able to supply steel as-rolled or already quenched, in a wide range of dimensions.

Economic and technical analysisImpact of variations in raw material costs on our product offer: an illustration relating to variations in nickel prices. In addition to technical characteristics, it is important for users to be aware of the cost of their requirements. Among the alloys that constitute a stainless steel, nickel, chromium and molybdenum are those which have the greatest impact on price and price variations. Nickel remains the principal element in stainless steels to exhibit this price volatility. The graph below illustrates this volatility. With 2 nickel levels (and other factors remaining constant) the graph shows the cost of grades within the Stainless Europe portfolio.
