2014 was an exciting year for Girl Guides Singapore (GGS).

In keeping with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts’ (WAGGGS) Millennium Development Goal ‘Education

opens doors for all girls’, GGS rolled out a wide array of programmes during the year. This included events at home like the

World Thinking Day celebrations, the introduction of new partnerships leading to new and innovative programmes and badges, and several

international Guide camps and conferences. All these activities gave our members and girls opportunities to interact, cultivate leadership and life skills, as

well as build self-esteem and confidence.

2014 saw a few new appointments. We welcomed Ms Koh Kah Sek (Group Financial Controller, Far East Organisation) as Vice President and Audit Committee Chair, as well as Ms Ho Shyan Yan (Partner, Assurance, Ernst & Young LLP) as our new Treasurer.

As you know, the programmes that we run are only made possible by the generous support of individual and corporate supporters and donors. Thank you for your ongoing support of our annual cookie sales. Our Guiders, Guides and Brownies appreciate your generosity and warm welcome when they approach you each year. We look forward to your continued support for this year’s special SG50 edition.

Another highlight was GGS Carnival 2014. This was not just a fund-raising event but an opportunity to bring the spirit of Guiding to everyone. Altogether, 105 stalls were set up at the three venues: Guide House; Nan Hua High School and Changkat Changi Secondary School. Guiders, Guides and Brownies from 70 schools manned the stalls. In addition, we hosted 42 underprivileged children from Chen Su Lan Home, Fernvale (MINDS) and Marymount Centre, giving them a taste of Guiding.

As it is the SG50 year, the funds raised have been matched dollar-for-dollar by the SG50 Care and Share Grant Scheme initiated by the Government.

To have a better overview of the funds needed by GGS and to consolidate our fund-raising efforts more effectively, we have appointed Ms Yvette Cheak as Fundraising Chairman.

I will always be grateful to our Council and Executive Committee members and staff whose tireless service knows no bounds.

It has been an honour and a real pleasure for me to serve Girl Guides Singapore.

Chief Commissioner’sReportGirl Guides Singapore (GGS) started the year with a strategic review, GGS21, to take stock of where GGS is and what it needs to stay relevant in the 21st century. Together, the Executive Committee (Exco) and Guiders identified resilience, integrity, compassion and empathy as the key attributes that our girls need to reach their full potential in a fast-changing world.

We are committed to developing programmes that would enable our girls to groom these attributes, broaden their thinking, and engage in active lifelong learning. Our theme, Imagine More, clearly embodies the immense potential opportunity that lies ahead.

As part of an on-going effort to meet the evolving needs of our girls and Guiders, we embarked on several major initiatives in 2014. This included revamping the Brownie and Guide handbooks and making them available online; reviewing the Puan Noor Aishah (PNA) Award criteria; and expediting leadership renewal in the Exco.

During the year, we were truly honoured to have Her Majesty the Queen of Brunei Darussalam visit the Guide House, hosted by our Patron Mrs Mary Tan. The visit strengthened our belief that Guiding is an international Movement that has far-reaching impact and is anchored on a common vision of enabling girls all over the world, in more ways that we can possibly imagine.

GGS also partnered with public and private organisations to promote awareness and advocacy amongst our girls on global issues. Examples include the GGS PUB Water Challenge Badge to equip Guides to become water conservation advocates; and, the Science Investigator Badge – supported by Rolls Royce Singapore - to spur interest amongst Brownies in science, engineering and aviation.

Participation in regional and international conferences and training, such as MOE’s Values-In-Action (VIA) Learning Journey and the AP Region Conference for Leaders of Girls 2014, cultivate a strong sense of sisterhood, values and passion for Guiding. Our representatives emerged from these events brimming with confidence to lead and to share their new insights with fellow members.

I would like to thank all Guiders and volunteers for your unrelenting focus and passion. Your collective efforts have created meaningful and memorable programmes for our girls to experience different aspects of Guiding and hone the attributes that we believe in.

Looking ahead to GGS’ centenary in 2017, it is our aspiration to further strengthen our Girl Guiding Movement to withstand the test of time. Our aim is to make what may seem impossible possible for our girls. The work has begun.

Mrs Joy Balakrishnan has been instrumental in setting directions for Girl Guides Singapore (GGS) since assuming the role of President in 2007. Under her leadership, GGS has progressed significantly. Her key achievements include:

4

Raising Volunteerism at GGS

She set up an effective volunteer management system

for GGS by spearheading the Volunteer Coordinator Pilot

Project (2009), working with Dr Eileen Aw.

Chairperson, World Centenary Fundraising Dinner (2011)

Under her leadership, GGS held a successful dinner event at the Fullerton Hotel. The event raised $500,000 and honoured former

Patrons and Presidents who had contributed tirelessly to the

Guiding movement.

Spearheading the GGS Fundraising Committee

This provides a structured approach to garner

substantial funding for Guiding activities, such as the camp enhancement

project (2012).

Driving GGSí Annual Cookie Sales

She provided enthusiastic leadership

and an expanded support network to promote

and drive sales.

Initiating GGS-Youth Olympic Games Partnership (2010)

More than 100 Girl Guides and 10 Young Adults gained first-

hand experience of supporting a large-scale global event,

by being involved as results runners, flag bearers and

mascots.

World Thinking Day 2011 Project with 5 Community

Development Centres

This fostered strong community spirit and empathy as 1,000 Girl Guides were directly involved in distributing hampers to 1,000

low-income families.

To recognise her outstanding service and contribution to developing Girl Guiding in Singapore and the Asia Pacific region, Mrs Balakrishnan was presented WAGGGS’ top regional award – the Asia Pacific Region Appreciation Award - in 2013. In 2014, she received the Laurel Leaf - GGS’ highest award.

On behalf of GGS, we would like to thank Mrs Balakrishnan for her invaluable guidance and support. We wish her the very best for the future!

From May 2015, Ms Chang Hwee Nee will join GGS as its new President.

On 22 February, more than 4,000 Brownies, Guides and Adult Leaders of Girl Guides Singapore (GGS) gathered in their Divisions to commemorate World Thinking Day (WTD) 2014.

The four hosting schools - Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School (South Division), Yishun Secondary School (North Division), New Town Secondary School (West Division) and Changkat Changi Secondary School (East Division) – were abuzz with excitement.

The WTD theme for 2014 - ‘Education opens doors for all girls’ - aligned with WAGGGS’ Millennium Development Goal #2. World Thinking Day presents a unique opportunity to learn about life for girls and young women in different countries and to understand different Girl Guide and Girl Scout experiences across the globe.

In line with this, GGS’ organised various activities related to five focus countries: Armenia, Bangladesh, Benin, Egypt and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Participants learnt about their cultures through activities such as Bangladeshi basket-weaving, making voodoo dolls from Benin, Egyptian belly-dancing, tasting apricots from Armenia and rolling hula hoops like the children of St Vincent & the Grenadines. The girls earned the WAGGGS World Thinking Day badge after completing all the stations.

Donations from Singapore to the WTD Fund totalled $4,500. The fund will enable WAGGGS to provide grants to the focus countries to support MDG#2 as well as deliver leadership training to young women and support member organisations around the world.

Girl Guides Singapore Celebrates World Thinking Day

GGS President Mrs Joy Balakrishnan said, “GGS continues to prepare girls and young women to thrive in a changing world by helping them reach their fullest potential. We develop dynamic programmes for our Girl Guides and Brownies that equip them with competencies for the 21st century, including character, creativity, citizenship, communication and collaboration skills. We are grooming girls who will be independent learners, concerned citizens, active contributors and confident individuals.”

Siak Ru Jing, a Guide from South Division, shared, “One of the best things about Guiding is the opportunity to try new things. I’ve had many opportunities to set and achieve goals, identify and develop my strengths, and learn life skills. I enjoy working on meaningful projects with fellow Guides and schoolmates to help others.”

WTD was a wonderful reminder that every GGS member can put learning into action and step forward to serve the community. Together we can change our world!

Her Majesty visits Girl Guides Singapore

On 23 April, Mrs Mary Tan, Patron of Girl Guides Singapore, hosted Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha to a visit of the Guide House. Her Majesty Raja Isteri had accompanied His Majesty Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, on a State Visit to Singapore. HM Raja Isteri is the Royal Patron of the Brunei Darussalam Girl Guides Association.

Greeting Her Majesty upon her arrival was Chief Commissioner Ms Kim Lay Eng and the Guard of Honour formed by Brownies from River Valley Primary School and Girl Guides from Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School. A rousing welcome song led them into the Guide House where Ms Kim gave a presentation on GGS programmes and partnerships. The Guide House tour that followed brought Her Majesty to view the library, training room and flatlet.

During the tea reception, Guides from Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School assisted as hostesses while Brownies from Chongzheng Primary School performed ethnic dances for Her Majesty and the guests. To commemorate the visit, Mrs Mary Tan presented a framed Vanda orchid to Her Majesty; in return, she expressed support for Girl Guides Singapore through a personal contribution.

What an honour and an unforgettable day it was for the members of Girl Guides Singapore, Guides and Brownies who played host to this historic visit by Her Majesty!

Held every two years, the 2014 Wee Kim Wee Challenge Shield saw overwhelming response. Altogether, 53 teams – each with four Guides – took part in the preliminary round on 25 January. The top two teams from each Division qualified for the Finals on 1 March.

The Challenge Shield was a gift to Girl Guides Singapore from the late Dr Wee Kim Wee, Singapore’s fourth President. The cooking competition offers a unique platform for Guides to learn about cross-cultural heritage and international cuisines.

With its Imagine More theme, the 2014 Challenge required participants to first select a local dish from a WAGGGS member country, then use their creativity to modify the recipe to include an ingredient from any recipe found in Cooking for the President - the cookbook produced by Dr Wee’s wife and their daughter, Ms Wee Eng Hwa.

Within three hours, the Guides had to prepare, cook, serve and deliver a presentation about the two dishes. The Guides were evaluated on their cooking abilities, table decoration and presentation skills. In the process, the Guides learnt not only about the importance of teamwork, time management and resilience, they also gained insights into Mr Wee’s contribution to Singapore.

Ms Maureen Wee, Dr Wee’s youngest daughter and guest-of-honour at the Finals, was very impressed by the Guides’ high standards of culinary skills. International visitors from France, America, Cambodia and Africa, along with various school leaders, supported the event wholeheartedly.

Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School eventually emerged champion. They received the coveted Wee Kim Wee Challenge Shield 2014, which they will hold until the next Challenge in 2016.

On 31 May, more than 4,000 Brownies, Guides, Guiders, Young Adults, members of the National Council, Exco and Trefoil Guild, GGS volunteers, staff and friends came together for a day of fun at the GGS Fundraising Carnival. For the first time, the Carnival was held at three different geographical locations - the Guide House (Central), Changkat Changi Secondary School (East) and Nan Hua High School (West).

Mrs Joy Balakrishnan, President of GGS, was guest-of-honour at the Guide House. The vice-principals of Changkat Changi Secondary School and Nan Hua High School graced the occasion at their respective schools.

Altogether, 105 stalls were set up at the three venues: 59 in Guide House; 24 in Nan Hua High School and 22 in Changkat Changi Secondary School. Guiders, Guides and Brownies from 70 schools across the four Divisions manned the stalls.

GGS hosted a group of 42 children from the Chen Su Lan Home, Fernvale (MINDS) and the Marymount Centre to a day of fun at the Guide House.

GGS CarnivalThe Carnival raised a total of $97,386. It was a welcome blessing that the whole amount was matched dollar-for-dollar by the SG50 Care and Share Grant Scheme initiated by the Government. The Care and Share Movement was launched in conjunction with SG50 to bring the nation together to show care and concern for the needy.

To launch the GGS Gardens by the Bay (GB) Ambassador’s Badge, two training sessions were held in June and September. These were followed by five facilitation sessions:

Sustainable Garden (June): Over four days, 23 Guides facilitated an educational workshop for 80 children daily. By using interactive experiments, they showcased GB’s Energy Conservation Strategies, including the use of selective cooling in the two Conservatories, aquatic filters in the lakes, and solar collectors on the Supertrees.

The Guides honed their presentation skills, conservation knowledge and cross-cultural understanding through interactions with the children. They felt a deep sense of achievement as they educated the children and won positive feedback from parents and visitors.

Orchid Showcase @ Singapore Gardens Festival (August): 22 Guides taught visitors to fold the Ornamental Orchid Origami. The Guides learnt patience and resilience along the way as they taught the challenging craft activity and worked with large crowds. Visitors were delighted to learn from the Guides. The Guides also acted as ‘World of Orchids’ trail ambassadors to help visitors appreciate the flora.

Celebration of Light (October): 28 Guides were craft facilitators for GB’s Deepavali activities. They taught children to create ‘Kolam’ art pieces using colourful rice grains and drew fun artworks on visitors’ hands and arms using henna.

Frozen Fables for Christmas (November): 23 Guides acted out winter stories from Greece, Scandinavia, America and Korea to GB’s young visitors. It was a fun and enriching experience as the Guides learnt to muster up courage to perform in public.

Christmas Paper Craft (December): 6 Guides taught children how to make Christmas cards inspired by the Christmas Wonderland Luminarie sculptures and intricate snowflake patterns. It was a meaningful way for the Ambassadors to end 2014.

To date, 54 Guides have attained the GB Ambassador’s Badge.

On 15 March, 699 Brownies and 2,054 Guides joined in the PUB World Water Day event at the Marina Barrage.

The day began with a 2.4km Community Walk for Water that took them from Gardens by the Bay East to Marina Barrage. Flagging off the walk was Minister for Environment and Water Resources, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, and Mayor for Central CDC, Mr Sam Tan. Guest-of-Honour Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean was joined by GGS President Mrs Joy Balakrishnan and Chief Commissioner Ms Kim Lay Eng.

Some girls dressed up gamely in water-themed head-gear and as water droplets. Following the walk, they performed a water dance and participated spontaneously in the GGS Project Runway Fashion Parade to showcase their costumes. Awards were given out for the most creative water droplet and head-gear designs.

Guides and Brownies tried water-related activities - such as windmill-making, sailing, quizzes and games - at the exhibition.

Another event highlight was the GGS PUB Water Challenge Badge launch. A PUB and GGS collaboration, the Badge aims to educate Guides and Brownies on the importance of Singapore’s water sustainability and conservation. It equips them as water advocates to encourage the community to support this cause. To date, 100 Brownies and 58 Guides have attained the Badge.

Throughout 2014, we continued to pursue international events that support GGS’ goals of developing leadership capacity at every level and deepening the Guiding experience in Singapore. Returning participants are energised and equipped with new skills, insights and ideas that can be channelled to support GGS’ development.

World Thinking Day (WTD) celebrations in Singapore on 22 February saw the launch of GGS’ theme for 2014: ‘Education opens doors for all girls’.

To celebrate international friendship, International Commissioner Tan Ngee Tiang led a delegation of 18 girls and adult leaders to Johor Bahru to join Girl Guides Association of Malaysia’s (GGAM) WTD celebrations on 1 March. Brownie Commissioner Ms Tan Pau Cheng felt this was a good platform to collaborate and strengthen Brownie programmes. Regina Cheong, a Queensway Secondary Guide, was thrilled have a photo taken with GGAM President Datin Seri Hajah Rosmah Mansor to top off a memorable trip.

Deputy Chief Commissioner Ms Goh Soon Poh was GGS’ representative at the Commonwealth Chief Commissioners’ Conference (30 June - 4 July), whilst various young leaders attended WAGGGS’ 35th World Conference (5-9 July, Hong Kong) and the Asia Pacific Region Conference for Leaders of Girl (30 November - 5 December, Melbourne, Australia).

Ms Wong Jingyi, young leader and 35th World Conference observer, said: “The event is excellent for driving awareness and discussion about issues such as Youth Learning and WAGGGS International Experience. An online facilitated forum ensures the Guiding and Scouting world continues to share ideas even after the conference.”

YA Lim Shan Shan said: “Meeting Guide leaders from all over the world at APRCLG helped me appreciate different customs and traditions. I enjoyed learning about different strategies used by countries to encourage girls to join Guiding.”

To enable girls to gain international experience through camping, GGS supported the participation of three Guides, three YAs and Guider Ms Aileen Tan at ‘F14ME’ (4-11 January, Pukekohe, New Zealand). YA Kimberly Lum said, “F14ME has broadened my horizons and fuelled my passion for Guiding. These memories will last a lifetime!” For Dinnie Afiqah from St Anthony’s Canossian Convent, a quote shared at camp - ‘Having friends…to talk with and confide in, is important to the well-being of society’ – was a meaningful reminder to be a good friend to others.

Two Adult Leaders, Ms Goh Phing and Ms Siti Raudha Abdul Rashid, led 10 Guides to “Xplore” (30 July - 6 August, Dublin, Ireland). The Guides learnt many valuable lessons such as how resilience and hard work contributes to one’s achievements. Foo Yihn from CHIJ St Theresa’s Convent shared, “A rock under extreme pressure would eventually become a diamond!”

Jane Kwek from Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School recalled fondly lighter camp moments, such as when strong winds blew away their kitchen shelter!

We hosted 100 visitors passing through Singapore. A growing number of Brownie Units continued to take up pen-pal programmes and many Guide Units initiated exchange activities with overseas Units through the school-based Trips for International Experience Programme.

Upcoming 2015 activities promise to enhance international Guiding experience, in line with GGS’ and WAGGGS’ goals.

GGS @ Conferences MOE Conference for the Co-curriculum

On 18 October, six Guides shared with MOE conference attendees their experience with GGS badge programmes.

The Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden Green Ambassadors team talked about how the hands-on teaching approach was useful in helping them learn about plant life, as well as in boosting their presentation skills and confidence. They learnt the important values of tenacity and persistence, which enabled them to overcome visitor rejections and achieve their required number of conducted tours. Their focus on delivering engaging tours was rewarded by overwhelmingly positive feedback.

The Gardens by the Bay Ambassadors team shared about the training projects which helped to shape their knowledge about sustainable gardens and their social interaction skills. To address time and task management challenges, the Guides constantly guided and encouraged each other. The end

Commonwealth Chief Commissioners’ ConferenceGGS’ representative Ms Goh Soon Poh joined participants from 26 countries - some from as far as the Bahamas, Uganda and Papua New Guinea - to renew ties and share ideas at the Commonwealth Chief Commissioners’ Conference (30 June-4 July, Kuala Lumpur).

Themed ‘Inspiring Women’, the event explored key topics, such as ‘Developing Inspirational Leaders’. It also showcased notable Guiding community projects, like Canada’s Operation Earth Action which drives environmental service activities for Guides and UK Girl Guides’ Pop Concert for more than 21,000 girls annually.

Conference participants visited the Girl Guides Association of Malaysia headquarters where they experienced ethnic dances and songs, local delicacies, local crafts and games.

Ms Goh said: “We learnt and shared many interesting ideas and made new friends. I was reminded that Guiding is an international movement, with leaders and girls who come from very different backgrounds. What we share is a common mission to develop girls and a common bond with the Guide Promise and Law.”

results included the successful delivery of highly informative programmes to visitors and stronger friendships between fellow Guides.

The Guides’ enthusiasm and confidence impressed the Conference participants.

‘Anything’s Possible’ @ APRCLG 2014Contingent leader Mrs Esther Fong, together with young leaders Valerie Pang, Siti Nubaya Jumain, Hasnita Binte Surani, Nurul Huda Binte Mohamed Hud and Lim Shan Shan, represented GGS at the Asia Pacific Region Conference for Leaders of Girls 2014 in Melbourne, Australia (30 November - 5 December).

Themed ‘Anything’s Possible’, the event offered a host of interesting programmes packaged as ‘rides’, in line with its theme park concept. Knowledgeable Guiders delivered highly-engaging indoor and out-door sessions, from workshops to hands-on games. They skillfully incorporated WAGGGS’ education methods, such as ‘Learning By Doing’ and ‘Connecting With Others’. For example, the eight Millenium Development Goals were sung to the familiar tune of ‘This Old Man’ to boost recall!

The ‘Free Being Me’ and ‘Girl Maya’ workshops emphasised positive self-esteem, thinking and attitude. Guiders were reminded to inculcate self-belief – a pre-requisite for becoming a positive influence to the girls they lead. An Advocacy workshop showed how small actions can influence people around them to make good decisions that improve lives.

Effective facilitation challenged attendees to not only re-evaluate the principles and core values of Guiding at international and member organisation levels, it also focused their efforts on the key aim of finding new ways of promoting and advancing Guiding. Thought provoking questions were posed to set everyone thinking about the ‘means’ and ‘ends’ of achieving goals.

Attendees sharpened their communication and leadership skills through active participation. Reflection sheets, notes and personalised conference folders further reinforced learning. Attendees collected a theme patch every day; when put together, the five patches formed a large souvenir patch.

APRCLG 2014 was powerful and enriching. It has inspired us to promote Guiding wherever we are!

In 2014, Brownie Branch focused on education to equip our girls with valuable life skills for our fast-changing world.

On 8 March, more than 100 Brownies and Brownie Guiders, together with Public Hygiene Council Chairman Mr Liak Teng Lit, joined the Recycling Outreach and Litter-Picking programme to raise awareness of recycling amongst Bishan residents.

On 27 September, GGS and Rolls Royce Singapore launched the Science Investigator Badge with a Seletar campus tour. Insightful presentations by two female executives gave 63 Brownies a better understanding of engineering in our daily lives. Engineer Ms Teddy Ong from International Engine Component Overhaul shared her passion for engineering and conducted simple experiments that led the Brownies to explore, discover and think for themselves. FlyScoot’s Head of Training Captain Eva Maria Thien challenged the Brownies to become ‘high-flyers’ by sharing lessons from her 20-year flying career.

At the Gardens by the Bay Badge launch on 1 November, more than 100 Brownies and Brownie Guiders toured the conservatories to learn about plants from different countries and their environmental threats.

At the Clean and Green Singapore carnival for schools (4 & 5 November), several Chief Commissioner’s Award Brownies presented NEA Badges Programme highlights to the public; they also shared dengue prevention tips from their Mozzie Buster badge work with Wonderland pre-schoolers. GGS Chief Commissioner Ms Kim Lay Eng presented NEA Resource Conservation and Public Health Champion badges to 168 Brownies and Cub Scouts at the Uniformed Group NEA award ceremony.

On 15 November, 66 Brownies learnt practical skills - including basic first aid, fire safety and life-saving – at the first-ever Emergency Preparedness (EP) Workshop at Central Fire Station. After a CD Heritage Gallery tour to understand Singapore’s fire service history, SCDF Lieutenant-Colonel Bob Tan presented Certificates of Participation to the Brownies, encouraging them to be resilient Young EP Ambassadors.

We look forward to even more enriching educational journeys in 2015.

2014 was another fruitful and vibrant year for Guide Branch, marked by meaningful programmes aimed at bringing out the best in our Girl Guides.

The newly-launched two-level PUB Water Challenge Badge equips Guides with essential knowledge about Singapore’s water sustainability and enables them to become advocates in our schools and community as PUB Water Ambassadors. By end-2014, 33 Guides had attained the Level 1 badge and 25 Guides had completed the Level 2 badge.

Guide Branch also collaborated with the Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) to launch the SKM Badge, with four badge levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Gold Crossover. To earn the Gold Crossover Badge, Guides and Scouts must collaborate in teams of six to plan, implement and execute a project advocating kindness in their communities. SKM’s General-Secretary Dr. William Wan presented 64 Guides and Scouts with the Gold Crossover Badge during the Kindness Badge Award Ceremony on 13 November at Suntec City.

Following two rounds of training, 57 Guides were able to conduct nature tours for children and visitors at the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden (JBCG). This enabled them to earn their Green Ambassador Badge.

Another 54 Guides completed the Gardens by the Bay Ambassador’s Badge. As this programme imparts in-depth knowledge about plants, garden trail planning and community engagement, the Guides gained competencies to become active ambassadors for Singapore’s natural heritage.

Altogether 43 Guides from 19 schools successfully attained the Baden-Powell Award (BPA) - the highest award conferred by the Chief Commissioner. 2014 saw the highest number of BPA recipients in three years, following two rounds of stringent testing of 199 applicants.

A total of 62 Gold, 18 Silver and 10 Bronze Puan Noor Aishah (PNA) Awards were given to Guide Units to recognise their achievements in Guiding.

Nine Guides received the President’s Guide Award from President Tony Tan on 10 December at the Istana.

Young Adult Branch2014 saw Young Adults (YAs) participate actively at international Guiding events and take the lead in organising activities in a wonderful demonstration of self-directed learning and initiative!

YAs Thoo Wan Ling, Kimberley Cham and Synth-Di Tan attended ‘F14ME’ in Auckland where they learnt new skills, trekked up the Pinnacles and abseiled with YAs from other countries.

Volunteering with ‘Helping Hands’ at Pax Lodge in the United Kingdom (UK), YAs Kareen Chan, Nur Siti Hawa and Chua Siew Ying helped re-paint the dining area, facilitate a wide game and teach bedroll-tying to Brownies.

YAs at the Asia-Pacific Region Conference for Leaders of Girls 2014 learnt innovative ways of running Guiding meetings, whilst Rani Jessie gained fresh Guiding insights from the UK Learning Journey with the Training Committee. YAs exchanged best practices with Malaysian Rangers and trainers as part of the GGS Trainers’ Fellowship Weekend.

YA Branch supported many local initiatives. Two afternoons of car-washing raised funds to sponsor Marymount Centre children for a day of GGS Carnival fun, food and games! They also co-organised Camp’s Wide Game for Guides and ensured participant safety at checkpoints island-wide. YAs acted as Activity and Division Leaders at the National Camp for Uniformed Group members held at Home Team Academy.

To build a pool of testers for the Guides’ Foot Drill proficiency badge, GGS Camp Commissioner Ms Hasna Alsagoff conducted stringent foot drill command training for 14 YAs. YAs also learnt about the WAGGGS-Dove ‘Free Being Me’ programme from Ms Karen Chatto, WAGGGS’ Asia-Pacific Development Executive.

To re-live their Guiding days, YAs organised a retreat at Camp Christine. Its packed programme included craft-and gadget-making, outdoor cooking and a campfire with traditional songs in a BP Ring. Choong Jia Chee, HQ Chapter committee member, said, “We had loads of fun making bread-and-butter pudding, campfire cones and even a catapult!”

Dunman High’s YA Chapter hosted a Creative Pioneering session where 26 YAs built structures such as see-saws, swings and slides. Escape Artist and Laser Tag activities taught YAs team spirit, motivation, resilience and quick response under difficult situations. YAs even learnt the art of hair-braiding, nail-painting and making cucumber eye masks at a personal grooming session, complete with a fashion parade grand finale!

2015 promises to bring YAs even more enriching activities.

2014 started on a high note. As North Division’s service learning partnership with Sree Narayana Mission Home for the Aged Sick (SNMH) entered its 4th year, Empathy Training Workshops were held for 16 Brownie Packs and Guide Coys. A year-long calendar featured visits and activities, which culminated in a memorable outing to the Yishun Pond with the elderly residents.

On 22 February, Yishun Secondary School hosted World Thinking Day celebrations and North Division Day. Ms Caroline Lim, VP of GGS, graced the occasion which featured hands-on activities from WAGGGS’ five focus countries. Division Day highlights included a telematch, as well as poster design, dialect karaoke-singing and fusion dance competitions; these encouraged the Brownies and Guides to try out various aesthetic activities and showcase their talents.

In June, 28 Guides attended North Division’s Camp Training at Camp Christine. Camp Commandant Ms Angeline Tey led four pre-camp training sessions and taught the girls new skills during the camp. The Guides – many of whom were first-time campers – learnt to network, exchange ideas and share best practices; they also received patches depicting various camp activities and skills.

The Brownies and Guides enjoyed the outdoors. Naval Base Secondary School and Yishun Town Secondary School Guides and Guiders co-organised the Wide Game Challenge at Botanical Gardens for the Brownies, while Guides from 15 companies honed their creativity and camp craft skills at the Outdoor Challenge.

North Division Committee held a 2014 review and 2015 planning session to develop enriching Brownie and Guide programmes. Ms Kwok Honey from Seng Kang Secondary School also shared her learnings from Foxlease and Pax Lodge in the UK.

2015 promises to be another fulfilling Guiding year of fostering friendships and learning for the North Division!

American author Zig Ziglar once said, “Ability can take you to the top; but it takes character to keep you there.”

It was with this in mind that the South Division Committee embarked on organising various activities that would let the Brownies and Guides have fun, whilst inculcating values such as resourcefulness, teamwork and tenacity for tough times.

South Division Day was held on 23 August at Balestier Hill Secondary School. It presented a good platform for the Guides of Balestier Hill Secondary School to learn about event planning, teamwork and leading large groups. They organised a myriad of fun and educational activities, such as four-legged race, ketupat-making, ‘it’s hip to SIGN’, Watch-and-learn, and Challenge of the Mind. The Guides and Brownies demonstrated sheer grit and determination as they participated in the activities.

On 18 October, the South Division Guides and Brownies enjoyed a good time of bonding during the ‘Playoffs’ event held at Singapore Chinese Girls School. The activities- such as ‘Powers of Observation’, ‘War-time Communication’, ‘Straw-heart Portrait’ and ‘Pin Knockout’- tested the Guides’ and Brownies’ ability to use their senses. They helped the girls to learn about the importance of teamwork, strategising, planning and ownership to accomplish their tasks well.

The South Division Committee was glad to see the development of their Guides and Brownies, in the areas of teamwork, perseverance, determination and resourcefulness.

nature.

2014 was enriching and meaningful as our Guide Units organised many activities which included Brownie Units; this contributed significantly to strengthening bonds across the Division.

East Division’s World Thinking Day celebrations at Changkat Changi Secondary School included activity booths and performances aligned to this year’s theme ‘Education Open Doors to All Girls’ and the five WAGGGS focus countries.

Guide Units from Bedok Town Secondary School, CHIJ Katong Convent, Geylang Methodist School (Secondary), St. Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School jointly organised the 7th East Division Brownie Revel. Held on 8 March at CHIJ KC, the event was an ideal platform for leadership training.

On 31 May, Guides, Brownies and GGS supporters in the East converged at Changkat Changi Secondary School for the GGS Carnival. Vice-Principal Mrs Valerie Pinto graced the event, which had stalls offering a selection of games, craft items and cooked food.

Brownies from Yumin Primary, Feng Shan Primary and Chongzheng Primary Schools took part in ‘Cooking the Brownies Way’. This combined activity was a resounding success as the Guides helped with the fire while the Brownies cooked.

On 1 November. more than 1,200 Brownies and Guides took part enthusiastically in East Division Day at Chung Cheng High School. Themed ‘Metamorphosis – A New Era!’, the talent showcase included dance, cheerleading, fashion, music and singing, as well as a display of skills and creativity in toy-making, scrapbook designing, recycling crafts and mini-gadget construction.

Guides from Anglican High School and Changkat Changi Secondary School showed their passion for cooking, table-setting and international cuisines in the Wee Kim Wee Challenge. Changkat Changi Secondary School eventually emerged Runner–up.

At the national level, our committed Guiders organised various initiatives for cluster collaboration, whilst our Brownies and Guides supported activities, such as the Jacab Ballas Children’s Garden and Gardens by the Bay Ambassadors programmes. These experiences have groomed our members to become more confident, resilient and appreciative of nature.

The Guides learnt outdoor skills

like pioneering, and soft skills in communication,

leadership and conducting Guiding

activities in interesting and engaging ways.

West Division celebrated World Thinking Day 2014 at New Town Secondary School with a Learning Carnival featuring the culture, food, craft and games of the five WAGGGS focus countries. Guides and Brownies welcomed guests-of-Honour GGS Deputy Chief Commissioner Ms Goh Soon Poh, Trefoil Guild President Ms Choy Poh Kee and NTSS Principal Ms Wong Yu Yuh with a thunderous Adiji Yell and Welcome Song.

More than 700 Guiders, Guides, Brownies, family and friends in the West joined in GGS Carnival 2014 at Nan Hua High School (NHHS). Highlights included games, crafts, food stalls, as well as performances by Guides and Brownies from NHHS, Commonwealth Secondary, Boon Lay Gardens Primary and Jurongville Secondary Schools.

From 5 to 7 June, 39 Guides from nine Units joined the West Division Patrol Leader Training Camp at Camp Christine. Led by experienced trainers, the girls learnt outdoor skills like pioneering, and soft skills such as communication, leading groups and conducting Guiding activities. Guiders refreshed their Guiding skills and gained new ideas and confidence to lead their Units.

On 12 July, led by Guider Ms Wee Yee Ing, seven Guide Units joined hands to run a Craft Workshop for Brownies and Guides from 11 schools. They ran various stations, including Time-Gemstone, Shrinkable Plastic, Perler Beads and Fabric Flower Hair Accessories.

West Division Day on 16 August in Zhenghua Secondary School featured activities such as gameshow quizzes, Captain’s ball, telematches, and the making of crafts, posters, gadgets and sandwiches!

On 29 August, 350 Brownies and Guides from 17 Units attended the West Division Campfire at Assumption English School, where Principal and Guest-of-Honour Mrs Mabel Leong urged the girls to continue to grow, love and serve in Guiding. The Unit Identity competition brought much laughter to the girls.

Guides from Nanyang Girls’ High and River Valley High Schools jointly organised the West Division Heritage Trail on 30 August. Participants learnt about Tiong Bahru’s rich past and the importance of preserving Singapore’s culture and heritage.

Training Committee embarked on two new projects in 2014: the Learning Journey to visit the Foxlease Centre and Pax Lodge in the United Kingdom (3-12 September), and a Trainers’ Fellowship Weekend (5-7 December).

The Trainers’ Fellowship Weekend was organised at Camp Christine in Singapore to facilitate the sharing of invaluable learning experiences of volunteer trainers. Participants included 12 GGS Young Adults Branch and 15 Girl Guides Association Malaysia (GGAM) members from Selangor, Perak, Kedah, Negri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur. Event highlights included Asia Pacific Chairman Ms Low Lih Jeng’s first-hand sharing of recent Guiding developments in the Asia Pacific Region; and, a special session on ‘Conducting a traditional Girl Guide Campfire’ by former Chief Commissioner, Mdm Chan Siok Fong.

In 2014, staff trainers conducted two rounds of PLTC, Camp Training and Sixers’ Training at HQ level to meet overwhelming demand from the Units, even though the initial plan had been to run only one round of training.

In addition to running its regular twice-yearly Basic Training Course (BTC) for new Guiders and teachers, Training introduced a one-day BTC pre-camp training session. This was based on previous participants’ feedback that an extra training day would enable proper mastery of camping skills, such tent-pitching and gadget-making. Skills Training for Guiders was expanded to include more sessions for Brownie Leaders.

On 4 September, 3 staff trainers and 8 volunteer trainers – comprising Brownie and Guide Guiders – went on a Learning Journey to the United Kingdom (UK). Their main aim was to better understand and experience ‘non-formal’ methods of education, for enthusing and empowering the next generation of girls. This is a key focus area of WAGGGS.

The first stop was Foxlease Centre in Lyndhurst, Hampshire. Set in 65 acres of breath-taking landscape, the historical Girlguiding UK campsite offers outdoor activities and camping facilities. Against the backdrop of tranquil meadows and grazing cows, the Princess Margaret Lodge offered a unique and conducive learning environment for the trainers.

The comprehensive day-time programme included outdoor challenges, such as low ropes, led by Foxlease trainers. The energised GGS group tackled the gruelling team-building ‘Gutter & Ball’ task with gusto and set a new challenge record – what a proud moment it was!

In the evening, WAGGGS trainers Jacqui Dixon and Lisa Upward gave valuable insights to the new WAGGGS training framework and ‘M.A.G.I.C.’ – an initiative which encapsulates the five essential elements underpinning WAGGGS’ ‘non-formal education’ initiative.

The second stop of the learning journey was Pax Lodge, one of WAGGGS’ four World Centres. The opportunity to interact with and learn from the Girlguiding UK Headquarters team was priceless and unforgettable. The group was given an introductory briefing to the new WAGGGS-Dove Free Being Me body confidence initiative and participated in an engaging discussion on ‘International Awareness’.

The team’s unanimous feedback was that this watershed trip by GGS Training Committee had fuelled their passion for Guiding. They returned home on 12 September, eager to share and put into practice what they had learned.

Camp2014 was a fruitful year for Camp. We continued to support ‘traditional’ camp requirements effectively whilst reinventing ourselves to meet the expectations of a new generation of girls.

We held a 1 1/2-day Quartermastering course for Guiders and Young Adults (YAs). Participants learnt about meal planning and food storage at outdoor camps; hands-on activities included erecting kitchen shelters, making kitchen gadgets and cooking.

Guide units responded enthusiastically to the Campsite Yeoman Service opportunity to clean Camp Christine on alternate Saturdays. By bringing Guides and Guiders to the campsite, Camp Christine has gained mindshare as an interesting camping location.

YAs, together with their friends, GGS staff and Yishun Town Secondary School Guides, helped to unpack and label the new canoes, life vests and paddles at Pandan Reservoir. This will enable 110 Guides to complete the canoeing course, which is sponsored by MOE’s Special Project Grants, and attain the Boatswain Badge. Four YAs and staff are on target to achieve Level 1 Canoeing Instructor Certification. GGS HQ office will handle all enquiries and bookings for canoe usage.

Camp Committee tapped on social

media to engage with and enthuse a new

generation of tech-savvy

Guides.

Wide Game CompetitionAnother key highlight for Camp was the Wide Game Competition that it co-organised with YA Branch for the Guides on 7 June. The competition showed how social media technology know-how and hands-on learning could be combined to enthuse and engage with a new generation of tech-savvy Guides.

‘Out-of-the-box’ thinking helped to create a brand new learning activity which led the Guides to explore all corners of Singapore. For the first time, QR codes were used to provide competition clues. In order to track their progress, participating Patrols used Instagram to post photographs of completed tasks to the Game Command Centre.

Guiders-in-charge used Whatsapp chat to keep in constant contact with the Command Centre, emergency personnel and Guides. Emergency vehicles were stationed at strategic locations to ensure participant safety. Everything ran smoothly, blessed by fine weather.

Post-event feedback from Guiders and Guides alike was overwhelmingly positive. This highly-interactive game mode created an energising and memorable learning experience for everyone involved!

Trefoil GuildThe Trefoil Guild’s goals are to keep alive the spirit of Guiding in its members and to garner their support for the Movement, especially Girl Guides Singapore. Many regular activities were organised during 2014 to foster camaraderie amongst Trefoil Guild members.

Highlights include:

– Gate-ball training sessions on Monday mornings near Block 196, Bishan Street 13.

– A monthly “makan” group. Formed on 28 October, the group’s first gathering at the Orchard Café featured good food and fun.

– A trip to Kota Kinabalu from 26 to 29 September. Trippers met with the Sabah Trefoil Guild and visited the Disabled Centre which the local Guild supports. They participated in cultural

activities and visited the foothills of Mount Kinabalu.

Trefoil Guild and the Scouts’ Guild hold joint activities every year. In 2014, the Scouts’ Guild and Seniors in Scouting invited Trefoil Guild members to their Chinese New Year ‘Lo Hei’ lunch and Ukelele Singalong. In turn, the Scouts’ Guild was invited to Trefoil Guild’s Down Memory Lane campfire.

Trefoil Guild supported GGS’ fundraising efforts enthusiastically by selling home-made cakes at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Members also ran three stations at the Carnival: a Cake Shop offering cupcakes and other cakes donated by members and prominent bakeries; Café Atas which served a selection of beverages; and, an action-packed gate-ball game stall.

Members also participated in GGS’ World Thinking Day celebrations, AGM and World Water Day.

In 2014, the Shop undertook the ambitious project to re-design the Brownie, Guide and Guider T-shirts. The new designs were rolled out in January 2015 to replace the old designs that have been around for about 10 years.

The Shop introduced many new items in 2014, such as Science Do-It-Yourself (DIY) project kits and resource books about Singapore’s nature hotspots and wild places. The books were well-received by Guiders and parents as they cover relevant content that is helpful to Brownies and Guides who are working on their outdoor badges, such as the Observer and Naturalist proficiency badges.

The Shop received visitors from all over the world during the year. As patch-collecting continues to be popular, the Shop constantly seeks new ideas to create fun and interesting patch designs. For example, to commemorate the celebration of Singapore’s 50th anniversary of independence, the Shop has designed SG50 patches that will be launched in 2015.

Special thanks to everyone who contributed their time and ideas to support the Shop’s efforts in 2014. This includes the T-shirt Committee (Mrs Wah Teng Siew, Ms Caroline Lim, Ms Ng Kim Geok, Ms Tan Pau Cheng, Ms Ng Jin Fang and Ms Woo Shea Leen) and the Guides who had rendered their services during the Shop’s peak period between January and March.

General AdministrationThe focus in 2014 was on capacity building to enhance staff members’ skills and knowledge. Training Officers Ms Carolyn Ang and Ms Jasmine Cheong attended the Advanced Certificate in Training & Assessment (ACTA) between January and June. Executive Officer Ms Chui Sheok Cheng is currently pursuing a part-time Master of Community Leadership & Social Development degree course at SIM University.

Staff also attended various talks and workshops during 2014, including:

– Risk Assessment Management System briefing led by John Lim, Ministry of Education’s Head - Uniformed Groups, and Character & Citizenship Education Branch (CCEB) Officer Ms Poon Mei Xian (25 April)

– Cancer Awareness Talk by Kevin Wang from Singapore Cancer Society (30 July)

– Interactive workshop on Improving Teamwork by Ms Farheen Mukri (4 December).

To promote team bonding, a one-day Malacca trip was organised for staff on 23 September. They visited heritage sites, such as St Paul’s Church, Malacca Clock Tower, Queen Victoria Fountain and Jonker Street, and enjoyed authentic Peranakan meals together.

On 23 February, staff members were actively involved in preparing for and running the World Thinking Day events held at four different schools located across Singapore.

Staff also assisted with the World Water Day celebrations at Marina Barrage on 15 March. They manned an exhibition booth and distributed goodie bags to the Guides and Brownies.

For the GGS Carnival, staff members helped with food preparation, coupon sales and clearing up at the Guide House.

Staff successfully managed sales at selected Fairprice outlets and at Lucky Plaza to support the annual Girl Guide cookie sales drive in November. It was a complete sell-out!

Congratulations to GGS Wardens-cum-Trainers, Ghazali Bin Jumaat and Mail Ravanan, who received their 25-year and 15-year Long Service Awards, respectively.
