Andrea Brown D.P.T. ’06Physical Therapist Genesis Rehabilitation at Sewickley in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Andrea completed LVC’s program in physical therapy, earning her bachelor’s and doctor of physical therapy degrees in six years. She now applies her skills as a physical therapist at Genesis Rehabilitation, a multipurpose rehabilitation center in Pittsburgh. She loves working with older patients and finds it rewarding each time she helps someone gain mobility and independence.

Tyler Frantz ’07Fourth Grade Teacher Pine Street Elementary in Palmyra, Pa.

Tyler came to LVC planning to teach high school, but the opportunity to work with grade-school children made him realize elementary education would be a better fit. LVC made it easy to change gears and pursue his new passion. A positive student-teaching experience led to the interview for his current job, which he landed before he even graduated. Tyler’s approach to being an educator is broad. In addition to leading his classroom, he serves on Palmyra’s math committee, coaches the Envirothon Science team, and is head coach of the junior high girls’ soccer team.

Sophia Lunt ’05, Ph.D.Assistant Professor Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich.

Sophia’s passion for scientific inquiry began at LVC and led her to a Ph.D. in chemistry at Princeton and two years as a postdoctoral associate at MIT. Now Sophia is researching tumor biology at Michigan State, funded by a $368,400 grant from the Department of Defense. Sophia credits LVC for introducing her to the world of scientific research and for developing her writing and speaking skills, which she considers “crucial skills for scientists.” Her article, “A Domino Effect in Antifolate Drug Action in Escherichia coli,” was featured on the cover of the journal Nature Chemical Biology.

“ A month into my freshman year, my advisor was already encouraging me to get involved in research. The next thing I knew, I was headed to New York, Washington, and San Diego to present findings at conferences. That’s the kind of attention you get at LVC.”

Craig Layne ’05 Communications Coordinator Tri-County Regional Planning Commission in Harrisburg, Pa.

As an LVC student, Craig Layne interned at Harrisburg’s NPR affiliate, WITF-FM, adding professional context to his growing interest in journalism. After LVC, he attended the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism on a full scholarship, earning a master’s degree in journalism. After four years as a reporter for TV stations in Harrisburg and Erie, he returned to WITF-FM as the host of the Morning Edition news program. Craig’s communications skills and leadership experience led him to his current position—coordinating with 103 municipalities to address travel issues.

Deborah took a forensic accounting course at LVC and knew she had found her niche. Three accounting internships as an undergraduate led to a job at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where she worked for two years before earning her master’s degree in accountancy with a concentration in forensic accounting. Now, just seven years after leaving LVC, she is an associate at a regional accounting firm.

Tighe Sheldon ’07Recording Engineer DreamWorks Animation in Los Angeles, Calif.

Right out of LVC, Tighe Sheldon got a job as a production assistant for Howard Schwartz Recording in New York City, where he worked on films for DreamWorks, Disney, Pixar, and Blue Sky Studios. Five years later, the relationships he’d built with directors and producers led to his being hired as DreamWorks Animation’s first-ever full-time recording engineer. Tighe’s short but illustrious career includes work on hit films Tangled and How to Train Your Dragon.

Ruth didn’t know what career path she wanted to take when she came to LVC and still wasn’t sure when she left. But the skills and perspectives gained through her liberal arts education left her with many options. After graduation, Ruth worked as a legal secretary, went to law school, and now works at a firm practicing civil defense law. Ruth didn’t know it at the time, but she was preparing for her law career during her time at LVC. “My English major helped hone my analytical and writing skills, which I use every day in my work.”

Alan’s interest in becoming an actuary began in seventh grade, so when the time came to choose a college, he was drawn to LVC by the excellent reputation of its actuarial science program. While Alan was at LVC, two actuarial internships provided valuable professional experience; one led to a full-time job offer after graduation. Now an associate at John Hancock Financial Services, Alan works in the daily operations and risk reporting functions of Variable Annuities Hedging. He is a member of the American Association of Actuaries (MAAA) and a fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA).

Professors get things started with personalized academic planning, ensuring that students graduate in four years with relevant, meaningful skills and experiences. Career counselors help students explore professional options and learn how to market themselves in the world after college—whether the first stop is the workplace or graduate school.

Complete PreparationAs a pre-professional college, LVC continually asks students to learn in ways that prepare them for their eventual careers. Across the curriculum, LVC professors stress the development of such portable skills as clear spoken and written communication, critical analysis, and the ability to infer meaning from evidence. These skills help LVC students thrive in internships, impress in interviews, and approach any professional situation with confidence.

Career DevelopmentAt LVC, career counselors are available to students at any time, as early as the first days of their first year. To help students explore professions and develop post-graduation plans, LVC career counselors use a battery of computer-based assessments that give students a clear picture of their personal strengths. Counselors work closely with students as they develop résumés, draft cover letters, and prepare for job interviews. Additionally, counselors help students applying to graduate, medical, or law school prepare for their entrance exams and write their application essays.

Beyond counseling, career development offers a variety of tools, services, and programs to help your son or daughter research and prepare for entry into the professional world. Internship and job fairs give students opportunities to meet large numbers of potential employers face-to-face. LVC’s online JobCenter allows students to post résumés and connects them with employers looking to fill jobs or internships. The Office of Career Development hosts annual career days both on and off campus to help connect students to employing organizations and offers a robust array of programs to coach students in reaching their professional goals.

Global Alumni NetworkLVC’s 16,000+ alumni work in many professions around the world. Most feel a strong connection to their alma mater and are glad to lend a hand to LVC students getting their start in the world. The College’s online alumni mentoring program—Career Connections—links students with a database of more than 450 alumni and parents who have volunteered to mentor them about careers, job search techniques, graduate school options, and strategies for making the transition from college to the professional world. Through the online JobCenter, students can search for alumni by LVC major, industry, interest, region, or country.

Specifically designed to give first-year students a glimpse into potential career options, LVC’s career shadowing program—Project CLOSE-UP—pairs alumni with students, providing on-site, professional experience.

Internships

One of the reasons our graduates fare so well in the job market is that many of them graduate with experience in the workplace. Professors and career counselors help students in every major identify and land internships in their chosen fields. Some of these lead to full-time job offers. Lebanon Valley College is a private, coeducational college founded in 1866 and dedicated to the liberal arts.

CAMPUS/LOCATION

58 buildings on more than 340 acres in Annville, Pennsylvania, a town of 5,000 near the Pennsylvania Dutch countryside.

STUDENTS

1,648 full-time under- graduates. The ratio of women to men is 54:46.

FRESHMAN CLASS PROFILE

415 students. 81 percent were in the top 30 percent of their high school class, and the average SAT score is 1076.

FACULTY

106 full-time faculty members, 91 percent of whom hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees in their field; student-faculty ratio of 12:1 and average class size of 20.

Our application process includes an Early Decisionopportunity and is otherwise rolling. We encourage completed applications by March 1 for fall semester admission and December 1 for spring semester admission.

FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Approximately 97 percent of students receive grant or scholarship aid from LVC. Generous academic scholarships are awarded to students whose high school records demonstrate a commitment to challenge and achievement. Total financial aid awarded in the form of LVC grants and academic scholarships for 2013-2014 was $26,350,483. The average grant and scholarship package totaled $16,418.
