While the summer season draws near—to the delight of students and teachers alike—and many look for-ward to vacations, mission trips, and Vacation Bible School, the Christian community continues to celebrate the wonder and mystery of the Holy Spirit.

Who or what is the Holy Spirit?

Author L. William Countryman re-minds us that Jesus understood the Spirit under Hebrew and Aramaic names (ruah, ruha) which happen to be of feminine gender…which is why many refer to the Spirit as “She.”

The ancient words for Spirit also mean “wind.” Jesus says that the Spirit is indeed like the wind. You do not know where the wind comes from or where it going. (John 3: 8) Likewise, the Holy Spirit always has about it an element of elusiveness

and surprise.

We cannot pin the Spirit down. “She” does not stay in the same place or keep doing only one thing forever. The Spirit always contains the possibility of change and growth, of adaptation to new situations and addressing new challenges.

Writes Countryman, “She is indeed present: not at a particular address, not under human control, but in the same way the wind is present, free, powerful, often unexpected. Jesus promises that the Spirit will lead us in truth. The Spirit takes what be-longs to Jesus and proclaims it to us….”

Such is our hope…that we become more like Jesus as the Spirit forms and fills us with the very qualities which made Jesus the unique char-acter that he was and is. Referring

to the gifts of the Spirit, Eugene Pe-terson paraphrases the letter to the Galatians this way:

God…”brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit ap-pears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holi-ness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

May the Holy Spirit blow upon us all and fill us anew with these life-giving gifts!

Blessings,

Pastor Rudy

OUR FAMILY SUMMER 2018

Our June gathering will include a lunch of pizza and salad, and an amazing program by award-winning ac-tor, Mary Ann Jung, as she offers a first-person portrayal of Clara Barton. (You will remember Mary Ann from last year’s first-person portrayal of Amelia Earhart.)

The cost is the usual $6 for pizza and salad. Please bring cookies to share! Donations to offset the pro-gram cost are welcomed.

The date is Thursday, June 21, at noon in the Fellowship Hall. Invite a friend! And please RSVP by Mon-day, June 18, to the church office at 703-361-7800 or [email protected]. If you have questions, please contact Denise Childers, Director of Senior Adult Ministries at [email protected].

There will not be a July gathering, but August features Senior Adult Ministries Sun-day on Sunday, August 19. Martha Stokes, Director of Community and Church Rela-tions for Pinnacle Living (formerly Virginia United Methodist Homes, Inc.) will be our guest preacher at each worship service. Following 11:00 am worship, all Seniors are invited to a celebration luncheon prepared and served by members of our Youth Group.

Moving into the Fall, our luncheon/programs will be offered on the 2nd Thursday of each month (instead of the 3rd Thursday), to prevent overlap with other commu-nity groups. We welcome all adults 55 and over to join us on this journey of spiritual growth, building relationships, and having fun and fellowship.

Welcome to Senior Adult Ministries

Thank you!!!

Thank you to all the wonderful children’s ministry volunteers who served this past school year!

Please take a minute to thank those ministry leaders who made a difference in your child’s life!

OUR FAMILY SUMMER 2018

The Wesley Singers make their way to the surf and sands of Virginia’s southeastern shore for the Beacon of Hope summer tour. Eighteen sing-ers will serve as singing ambassadors for Grace UMC in the cities of

Newport News, Hampton and Virginia Beach the week of June 19-21. Virginia Wesleyan University will serve as the home base during the tour.

The Beacon of Hope tag evolved from a lively discussion during a Wesley Singers’ choir rehearsal in March. The singers wanted to capture the 2017-2018 choir theme of “shining their light” for Christ for the summer tour. The image of lighthouses and shining lights emerged. Lighthouses emit a beacon of light through a system of lamps and lenses to serve as a navigational aid to safely guide ships at sea or on inland waterways. Beacons of light, hope for maritime travelers… Naturally the lighthouse image stuck and “beacon of hope” was born.

The tour will feature community concerts. The underlying theme of the choral repertoire will support the light of hope and strength of God. We look forward to spreading the light of hope to others in a hands-on mis-sion project at the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center (JCOC) in Virginia Beach.

Thank you for supporting The Wesley Singers and their “Music and Mis-sion in Action” this summer. Help us kickoff our tour by attending the home concert at Grace UMC on Monday, June 18, at 7 pm. We covet your prayers, too, as we make our way to the southeastern Virginia coast!

Mission Encounter 2018 Smith Mountain Lake, July 27-29

Mission Encounter is a weekend event held for the Virginia Conference and attended by women, men, youth and even children! It is a great opportunity to study/learn more about the needs in mission work in our world and what we as United Methodists are doing about them. Please go online to take a look at this year’s brochure: https://www.vaumw.com/events/mission-encounter. Darlene Runaldue is the Assistant Dean to this year’s event and would be happy to answer any questions. Our own Barbara Barrick, will be one of the featured guest speakers during the mission time to help women’s prison ministry.

A Note of Thanks

When we started the band, SonRise was the name suggested to us by Rev. Milton. It was a good name. It is a good name. However, if you do an internet search, there are lots of churches/bands/services using some form of that name. The struggle for us was how do we get our music out there for folks to hear while cutting through all the other SonRise names. During the recording process of the CD we knew we must address our band name. After many suggestions, discussions and votes the name we decided upon was One Waypoint.

If you search the internet for the definition of the word "waypoint," most of the sites call it an interme-diate or stopping point on a jour-ney. Some sites mention a land-mark or a point of reference. The journey of the band as a group started with the journey of the band as individuals. As the lyrics of our song "We are God's People"

state: "we've all got a story how we came to Christ, a journey of faith and love, for some the road was long, others knew God all along...." For each of us, God is our waypoint, our point of reference as we glide along this glorious journey of life.

The journey of the CD started in 2014. The idea kicked off with a con-cert in March of that year. We were brimming with excitement as we started laying down tracks. During the process a number of unfore-seen circumstances delayed the production, the details of which are not important. What is important is in the end prayer, patience and perseverance were rewarded. (Of course that lesson is probably one we have all learned many times and know is true with the promise of our Lord.)

We the band, One Waypoint, the band formerly known as SonRise, would like to say "thank you." Thank you for all the support we've received over the years during the evening service, the kickoff concert and the album release concert on May 5. Thank you to those who came out on a rainy day for the One Love Manassas festival where the band was one of the performers. Thank you for all those who kept the faith when it seemed like the CD would never happen. Without the support of Grace leadership and the congregation the CD would still just be an idea.

So what's next for the band? In the short term, we will be leading some services on a Sunday in July. Beyond that, we don't really know what's in God's plan, but we are open to where He will lead.

Thanks to those who joined us for our groundbreaking on May 20. It was a great opportunity to honor the work and ministry that will evolve through this expansion.

As our property changes from week to week, and we begin to make draws on our construc-tion loan, we hope you will be a part of the process. Have you made a commitment toward our Lighting the Way campaign in 2018? It's not too late! In fact, we are seeking 50 more commitments toward this cam-paign between now and the end of the year. You may donate weekly or monthly, we are simply looking for intentional giving toward our expansion project. Please use the commitment card (inside).
