esPeCiallY fOr Men at tallman Medical spaFor many men, skin care is a mere afterthought. Beyond the world of shaving their faces, it is rare for a man to devote time to his skin, especially the skin on his face. However, proper skin care is essential for the present

and the future. Keeping the skin healthy and clean will help prevent wrinkles, acne, razor burn and sagging. Men are just as susceptible to these problems as women, and proper skin care should never be neglected.

Men generally have larger pores and oilier skin than women, which can attract more dirt and grime. Regular cleansing should be an integral part of any man’s skin

care routine. The use of a face wash product designed specifically for men and a Clarisonic on a daily basis will yield the greatest results. Shaving can cause ingrown hairs, razor burn, nicks and cuts. To minimize this damage, use hot water when cleansing prior to shaving to soften the hair follicles. Apply a thick layer of Murad’s cleansing shave before shaving and always rinse with cool water to close the pores. Moisturize your face after shaving with a product formulated for men. Healthy nails contain about 18 percent water. In the winter you are constantly moving between the warm, dry air indoors and the freezing temperatures outdoors. These extremes can reduce the moisture level in your nails, leaving them dehydrated. As you probably know, dried out nails are likely to break, split, and chip.

The protection plan: Intense hydration is the name of the game! Nails are made up of flattened dead cells containing keratin, but moisturizers can make them flexible, supple and less likely to split and break. So after every hand wash try to apply moisture rich hand cream, not only to your hands but get in the habit of rubbing it into nail beds and cuticles as well. At night rub in Avoplex cuticle oil.

save YOur sKin with these winter sKin tiPs:1. As weather conditions change so should your skin care

routine. Find a moisturizer that is oil based, rather than water, as the oil will create a defensive layer on the skin that retains moisture.

2. Apply sunscreen on a daily basis. No, sunscreen is NOT just for summertime. Winter sun, along with snow glare can damage skin if not properly protected. An SPF of 30 or above is recommended by dermatologists

3. Take care of your hands! We all know the dry, winter months can cause dry, cracking skin on your hands. The skin there is much thinner and has fewer oil glands than the skin on the rest of your body. Wear gloves when you go outside to prevent irritation. Apply an oil based lotion or crème before going to bed.

4. If your facial skin is uncomfortably dry avoid using harsh peels, masks, and alcohol based toners or astringents, all of which will strip vital oil from your skin. A mild milky or gentle foaming cleanser will thoroughly clean your skin without over-drying it! Follow with an oil based moisturizer or heavy night cream if you are prone to breakouts.

5. We all love those hot showers after a long day in the cold and wind, but those extreme temperatures can wreak havoc on your skin! The intense heat of a hot shower or bath will actually break down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to a loss of moisture. Try to keep your bathing ritual to lukewarm water and apply oil based body lotion immediately after while your skin is supple to soak in the moisture.

6. Steer clear of scented deodorants and anti-bacterial hand soaps. These can be harsh on the skin, stripping it of its natural oils. The experts suggest using mild cleansers for your hands and soap-free products.

7. Last, but certainly not least is exfoliation. Sloughing away dead skin cells is the first step to pampering your dry, scaly skin. This allows your moisturizers to penetrate deeper. If your skin is sensitive, start with a gentle exfoliant with micro-beads or sugar, if you have normal to combination skin us a sugar or salt scrub. This will slough dry scaly skin, but it’s always a good idea to exfoliate gently leaving your skin with a nice healthy glow.
