Our Country's Weather Today
HOW DEEP IT IS
THE DISTANCE ALL THE WAY AROUND
THE DISTANCE ACROSS THEWIDEST PART
THE DISTANCE ALL THE WAY AROUND THE PUDDLE
WE WILL USE STRING TO MEASURE THIS, AND THEN USE A YARDSTICK TO MEASURE THE LENGTH OF
STRING
THE DISTANCE ACROSS THE WIDEST PART
WE WILL USE A YARDSTICK TO MEASURE THIS IN FEET
HOW DEEP IT IS
WE WILL USE A RULER TO MEASURE THIS IN INCHES
Things you will need:
• A long piece of string
• A yardstick
• A ruler
• Worksheet
A pencil
• Scissors
• Make a group of 2 with the person sitting next to you
• When we go outside, we will measure one puddle together as a class
• You and your partner will then find your own puddle on the playground
• Together, you will measure the circumference, diameter and depth of your puddle
• Make sure to write down your measurements on your worksheet!!
Using your materials, take measurements of:
• The circumference by laying the string all the way around the puddle and then using your yardstick to measure the part of the string you used
• The diameter by holding the yardstick across the puddle at its widest point
• The depth by putting the ruler in the puddle in different places until you find the deepest part
Your pencil
A leaf
Your finger
A rock
Your group will share
• the circumference, diameter and depth of your puddle when
you used the string, yardstick and ruler
• the things you came up with to use
• the new circumference, diameter and depth of your puddle with the things you used
