Hooked On The outdoorsBy Mike Johnson

As the mercury rises, the days of sunlight get longer, and the school bellsno longer ring…..I harken back to the good ol’ days of the Summers of my youth. There we certain things that happened that truly marked that Summer was here forme…..First was “The Day” after the last day of school for the year, my Dadparading me down to Mike’s Barber shop and getting a crew-cut for the Summer. In addition to countless days spent at the community pool, the true highlight ofeach Summer and something we looked forward to was the neighborhood campingtrip…..8 families, both parents and kids alike, heading out in their wood paneledstation wagons off into the wilderness for a long weekend of getting in touch withnature while camping….and in the process creating a library of lifetime memoriesthat are vivid today as they were 40 years ago.

OK I want to get this camping thing across right though. Last year I wastalking to a friend in England and she told me her family just got back from themost epic “glamping” trip….I assumed she said camping trip and I was just missingit a bit because of her accent. Well, it turns out that here is such a thing as“glamping”….it is a combination of glamour + camping. These are places you goto luxurious locales, where spacious tents are already set up for you. There isoften lighting, air conditioning and comfortable beds, and in some cases even “tentservice”. This is a very cool concept…..but what I am advocating here isCAMPING….not glamping…you know the kind where you pitch your own tent, sleep in sleeping bags, make campfires, cook your own meals, etc, etc.

There are few if any smells better, and certainly none more appetite-inducing, than the smell of bacon and coffee being cooked over an open campfirein the early morning. There are few sites more mesmerizing than the overwhelmingamount of stars that can be seen in the night sky once you get away from the citylights. Fewer things feel more absolutely refreshing than grabbing a shower afterspending a day in the woods. Few things are spookier than hearing strange animalnoises off in the distance at night, or a ghost story being told around the campfireunder a full moon. You see, camping is a total sensory experience…one that shouldbe experienced on a regular basis, and best done when shared with others.

One could say camping is something that is innate in all of us, and actuallycomes in stages. Remember making “tents” under the dining room table using avariety of blankets, sheets, and pillows when we were in our single digits age-wise? Then came the camping, or should I say sleeping out in the backyard in ourearly to mid-teens. Then eventually this morphs into the real thing….a tent, in thewoods, in a remote location. So, what we are suggesting here is nothing foreign toany of us….all we are suggesting is to get out and do a bit of camping this Summer. For information on camping opportunities in the local area, check out: http://www.campingnc.com/Piedmont.htm

In closing, I want to remind everyone about the First AnnualCommunity Press Fishing Tournament announced in the last edition. Allaward categories are still wide open…..there are champions to be crowned;will you be one of them? Hey, maybe take a fishing pole when you gocamping…you just never know if you might come across a bit of water that lookspromising. Thanks for taking the time to read this article….wishing you a wonderfulSummer and of course….. Tight Lines!!!!!

Mood Matters

9

by Jennifer Locklear, MS EdS, LPCS, LCAS

Grief: Just the word can trigger emotions, whether the intensely raw and new, or unearthed reminders of losses from long ago, and everything in between.

Grief and Loss: it’s not just about deathAlthough death is the most commonly thought of form of loss (and cause of grief), grief can arise out of any loss: death,

divorce, moving, the loss of a friendship, the loss of a job, your baby going away to college.

New grief can bring past grief back to the surfaceIt is not uncommon for a loss to bring the grief of past losses back to the surface. A week before writing this article, my

sweet, fluffy kitty Thomas died unexpectedly. As I grieved Thomas, I also remembered my childhood Siamese catTootsie, who has been gone for fifteen years. I thought of Tootsie with a mixture of great fondness and some sorrow.

The Five Stages of GriefPerhaps you have heard of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s Five Stages of Grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and

Acceptance (Kessler). These stages are not intended to put our experiences into a neatly wrapped box, but rather are adescription of what Kübler-Ross noticed as commonalities of many grieving people.

Denial: This first stage encompasses the shock, confusion, and numbness that occur immediately after a loss. A personmay be frantically (or terrifyingly, or numbingly) asking themselves what just happened, and nothing makes sense. Denial

is a tool to survive.

Anger: As the shock of a loss begins to wear off, anger and sometimes bitterness tend to set in. This can take manyforms – anger at yourself, doctors or caregivers, God, even the person who died. Letting yourself feel and experience

the anger is an important part of the healing process.

Bargaining: Bargaining includes statements such as, “it should have been someone else.” “If only I had made him go tothe doctor sooner.” “If she had told me something was wrong, we could have done something sooner.” Bargaining is a

response to our pain – we would do anything to have avoided the loss and the pain.

Depression: As the loss becomes an even deeper reality, sadness and depression are natural responses. As with anger,it is important for the healing process to experience these feelings, as painful as they are.

Acceptance: People will sometimes say about a loss “I will never accept this, it is not OK.” Acceptance does not meanbeing OK with a loss; it is about accepting that the loss is a permanent change. After the death of a loved one, a

person’s role may change. If you were a caretaker for your loved one, for example, you may keenly feel the absence ofsome of the duties of your daily routine. Grief is not about getting over it, it is about getting through it and eventually

remembering with less pain.

These stages are a reflection of what people tend to experience in grief. However, the stages are not a hard and fastrule. People might experience a variation of any one of the stages: for example, experiencing sadness instead of

depression. A stage could be skipped altogether. Multiple stages can be experienced at the same time. Stages can bere-visited. Grief is a very individual process; there is no one right way to grieve.

( Mood Matters continued from page 9 )

Feel your feelingsWhen grieving, people are sometimes surprised by the intensity of their emotions or even the presence of certain

emotions. Grief can be complicated. If your loved one was suffering, you might feel a measure of relief. If a relationshipis complicated by abuse, the survivor might feel some reprieve. These more positive feelings can cause confusion andsometimes guilt. There are no right or wrong feelings to have; you can give yourself permission to feel what you feel.

Connect with your support systemDuring the time after a loss, friends and family are often willing to help but don’t know what to do. Consider takingsomeone up on their offer to help by reaching out and asking. While you may need some alone time, it may also be

helpful to balance that by spending time with a supportive friend – to talk to, go out with, or just quietly be.

Consider attending a support groupConsider if it would be helpful to connect with others who have also experienced a loss. No two losses are the same, but it can be helpful to see that others are experiencing similar feelings. Two options are GriefShare (find a group at

www.griefshare.org) and online groups at griefnet.org.Take care of yourself

During a great loss, you may find that you are not at the top of your game. Grief takes a lot of energy and can be verytiring. Try to get enough rest at night. Take some time to relax when you can. Although it is important to experience the

often difficult feelings in grief, it can also be helpful to take a break from it for a little while. Participate in a hobby.Consider scheduling some time with a friend to do something you both enjoy.

Ask the ExpertsWho better to ask about the best spot to play thankids. We thought we should look at what kids haveto do other than video games. This is not a knock on video games. Video games actually teach childrenpatience, stragetic thinking and other good qualities. But playing video games all day just is not the answer.Outdoor activity; physical activity is just what thedoctor ordered. So we asked Zack and Luke wherethey like to go and what they like or dislike aboutsome local places to play. The play area at Lewisville Town Square is alwaysa favorite. Both boys said they like the climbing butZack wished there was more on which to climb.“It feels it’s for younger kids” Zack said while

climbing. Both Zack and Lucas enjoyed meeting a newfriend Rory in the play area at the town square.Rory, Zack and Luke had fun together climbing andplaying ball. The town square has a pavillion, which isgreat for shade. The boys also like having the path onwhich they could ride their scooters and skateboards. The three boys got to play ball in the open spaceat the square. Rory’s mom is a soccer coach. Shegot to help the boys with some kicks too.Next on the tour was Joanie Moser play area andpark. Zack thinks the play equipment is a little olderand more of it. Personally, I like the open space at thetown square. The Joanie Moser play area is set backby the trees.

The conclusion for this adventure is a tie. The new friendand light open space, along with the shaded pavilion, at theLewisville Town Square was great. The higher (or moredetailed monkey bars, along with being able to ride scootersand skateboards around a larger path at Joanie Moser, wasalso fun for the boys.Zack asked why there isn’t a skate park in Lewisville. Thereisn’t even one close by. The only skate park (and it looksdeserted) I’m aware of is in Wilkesboro. It is a shamethere isn’t something to do for the kids a little big for mon-key bars. Maybe in the future. So get the kids out, have them meet new friends, and enjoyall of our local play areas. Next adventure, Tanglewoodand Jack Warren Park. Let us know of your local, kid friendlyadventures.

17

Going up the hill in Joanie Moser, there is a field with a patharound it. Zack and Lucas both enjoyed the concrete path.Zack rode his skateboard and Lucas rode his scooter.

Jewelers’ RowThe birthstone for July is Ruby. Rubies are preciousstones, a brilliant red color. Rubies go back as far as youcan imagine, as a desired stone. It is said Cleopatracherished her rubies. Rubies have a hardness rating of 9which makes them excellent for everyday wear, if you areso inclined. Care for your rubies with a warm water andsimple dish soap, rinse well. Do not use harsh chemicals.

August is represented by the semi-precious stone peridot. The T is silent. Peridot is a vibrant green stone. Peridot hasa green apple look. The hardness rating is only 6 to 7. Becareful if wearing every day. This is an excellent color forSummer fun fashions. Clean with a soft toothbrush andmild soap and water.

You will also find a complete list of birthstones on ourwebsite www.Our CommunityPress.com.

Meet OllieOllie Fobbs works at Lowe’sFood in Clemmons. You can findOllie there doing his job early inthe day. His terrific smile andfriendly personality make himeasy to find. What you don’t know about Ollieis while he is working his day job,he is a published author and aMinister of God. Rev. OllieFobbs has just published his elev-enth book.

Rev. Fobbs was ordained in 1986 and as he says, he stillran from God for ten years. His change of heart came oneday while listening to Dr. Billy Graham. Ollie made a choiceto stop running and spread the word of the Lord. His books,Inspirations of the Heart, (and now Inspirations of the Heart11) are available on Amazon. And while this is not an adfor Rev. Fobbs, I just feel compelled to let you know hiswords have lifted me in a time of darkness. Many of you know, from reading this publication, I wentthrough a tough time being on oxygen for eleven months.( Funny, I just saw the coincidence in Ollie’s 11th book, tomy 11 months on oxygen.) While going through my situa-tion, many of you wished me well and kept me in yourthoughts and prayers. I appreciated all of the wonderfuluplifting and concern from you.I continued to try to go about life as normally as possiblewhile wearing my oxygen, which included trips to the gro-cery store. One day, at Lowes’s in Clemmons, I exchangedhellos with the man dressed in white doing his job. He boldlytold me, “You’re going to be off that oxygen one day”. Ireally felt something when he said it. The doctors couldn’tfigure things out and one even told me I would always beon oxygen. Family too, was not convinced I would ever beoff of it, because the doctors didn’t think so, and I wascontinually failing the pulmonary tests.Ollie introduced himself only as Ollie, and I introducedmyself as Sarah. We chatted a little that day about Godand his works and about faith. What I left with was hope, which I had almost given up completely.I am sure all 11 of Rev. Ollie Fobbs’ books are inspira-tional and worth the read. To me, he will always be Olliethe gentleman I met at Lowe’s Foods, the person spread-ing hope. Thank you Ollie

Huge radio telescopes are used to scan the heavens, searching out the faintest signal. The larger telescope,

the fainter the signal it can detect. If we listen to our body, we can pick up the faintest,

earliest warnings that something is amiss. These messages can be detected long before the health

issue becomes serious.Ignore these warnings, and your body may have to

literally scream to get your attention!Be sensitive to things like:

· Changes in digestion or intestinal gas· Pain when attempting to turn or bend· A persistent cough or throat clearing

· Increased frequency of urination· Sudden loss or increase of weight

· Dark circles under the eyes· Inability to fall asleep or stay asleep
