Themes First! - Our Communities Objective: This activity supports individual learning outcomes as students complete tasks at their own levels, reinforcing symbol recognition, matching, reading/listening comprehension, and fine motor skills. Materials: • Community sight words worksheets (provided) • Pencils or markers Instructions: 1. Print the community sight words worksheets (1 set per student). 2. Laminate the worksheets for reuse and provide dry erase markers to the students, or instruct students to write directly onto the worksheets. 3. Provide students with: a. Worksheets b. Pencils or markers 4. Students should: a. Read the words in the boxes and use them to complete the sentences. Variation: Using a strip of paper, instructor covers the correct words for each sentence. Remove the strip of paper to show the words only after students have filled out their worksheets. TEACHING IDEAS FOR CENTERS Encourage students to complete the sentences without referring to the model. TEACHING IDEAS FOR INDEPENDENT WORK When working through this lesson, use a structured work system to encourage independence.
