NO AdORATION ON THANKSGIVING dAY! The Adorers of the Divine Mercy Adoration Cha-pel would like to thank Jesus for the following favors granted: Thank you Jesus, for the abundant harvest! Praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord, for a suc-cessful election for our nation.
“If you can’t think of something you are grateful for, you are not ready to eat turkey!” I had a friend from my first parish who always made the following announcement at the Thanksgiving table before Grace was said: “If you can’t think of something you are grateful for, you are not ready to eat turkey!” He made every-one go around the table and say what they were most grateful for that year, before Grace, and “dishing up” was allowed to proceed. Of course, there was the usual groaning and com-ments about the food getting cold, etc. But family and friends who gathered around that particular table knew they had to come prepared. They also knew that what was said gave wit-ness to the very reason for gathering in the first place and it usually was a heartfelt experience that was often remem-bered long after the pumpkin pie had settled and the leftovers packed away. My friend is long gone, but I would hope that his family continues the tradition of expressing gratitude for all the right reasons. And so, Thanksgiving 2016 is only days away and by now I suspect the menus must have been prepared and checked several times. My brother and I will be cooking in St. Paul for my father’s family, a tradition we began about ten years ago. He and I will prepare a traditional holiday meal for the fam-ily we only recently came to know and for us it is a labor of love and gratitude for finding them, but that is another story. I would hope that all of us will first and foremost be thankful for family and friends and our relationship with them. For without them, it would be just another day and an ordinary meal. We should also be grateful for our parish family, our Catholic Faith, and to live in a country where we are free to express our Faith. And there is so much more to be thankful for, if we take the time to think about it. Are we all aware of what we are grateful for this year? Hopefully, we’re not trapped in the mode of being negative about our problems or the latest news? This civic holiday has all the makings of a religious day of gratitude for it forms the foundation of almost any faith, but especially the Christian faith. Gratitude is a recognition that God has blessed us with many gifts, great and small, that should never be taken for granted. For Catholics, the conclusion of a “Jubilee Year of Mercy” should be at the top of the list. The Jubilee concludes this weekend with the end of the liturgical year. Are we grate-ful for the mercy shown to us through the Church and our neighbor? I will conclude this Thanksgiving greeting with my grati-tude for this year. I am grateful to be your pastor at St. Antho-ny, St. Katherine and St. Paul and for all those I now call my new parish family. The kindness and warm welcome from so many has been only part of the blessings I have received. For the staff and volunteers and especially the faith shared by young and “not so young,” I am most grateful. Thank you for your part in all of that. God bless you and your family during this time of gratitude. And finally, I will conclude with what my Mom always told us before going to someone’s house for Thanksgiving: “Eat everything on your plate… and don’t be pigs!” She always said it with love… Happy Thanksgiving!
Fr. Dave

Stewardship Thought Today we celebrate Christ the King and are reminded that all was created through Him and for Him. Does my steward-ship of the blessings entrusted to me give evidence that Christ is Lord of my life?• Whatever time we have is a gift from God and we are asked to use it wisely, to serve God and others.• The Tax Reform Act makes a Will vital and essential for ev-ery American. To preserve your hard-earned estate for those you love and have supported in life, distribute that estate le-gally by a Will.
Sunday Readings and BackgroundsSolemnity of Christ the KingWeek of November 20, 2016
Vocation View—The Church needs shepherds. Pray that the bishops will lead us well and rely on the power of God. (2 Samuel 5: 1-3)
Reading I : 2 Samuel 5:1-3David is anointed King.• When the Israelites anoint David as king, they
claim him as brother, a condition for kingship required to prevent foreign rule.
• After the kingship ceased, people longed for the time of David, an age of peace and prosperity.
• Some people hoped for a renewal of the king-dom. Others were looking for a specific person, a messiah of either kingly or priestly rank.
Reading II : Colossians 1:12-20Give thanks to the Father.• The Letter to the Colossians presents a different
image of kingship.• Kingship now involved preeminence over all
creation.• The kingdom has moved into eternity, and
Christ is the first within it.
Gospel : Luke 23:25-43You will be with me in paradise.• At the crucifixion, Jesus died with the sign
nailed over his head, “The King of the Jews.” Jesus did not fit the common image of the anointed king or messiah.
• In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus promises a place in his kingdom to one of the criminals executed with him.
• The good thief was promised a place in “Paradise” because Jesus’ death marked the beginning of a new way to salvation.
