My new coat, designed by God A priest’s prayer book comes in four volumes called the “Breviary,” and now you can view the book via an app for your phone. But, I still like holding a prayer book to pray. I am in Volume III for Lent and Easter. In the back of the volume is a folded piece of paper with the following story. I don’t even remember where the story came from, but I read the words often during the Lenten and Easter season. This story is called, “My new coat, designed by God.” The author is unknown. Or is it? I have a new coat; it was designed by God and given to me by Jesus Christ. All I had to do to receive this coat was to believe in God’s only Son. I find it fits me perfectly un-less I allow myself to become puffed up with foolish pride, then it’s too tight. If I walk with my head high, trying to be above those around me, then it is too short. But if I walk humbly as I should before God, it fits me just right. How is the coat made? The shoulders are wide and roomy so I can help my fellowman carry his burdens. The collar is made of God’s mercy; yes, the mercy of God’s promises. First that I may become his child and second, that I will one day dwell with Him in that home prepared for His saints. The cuffs are narrow, so there is no room to tuck away grievance and hard feelings toward my neighbors. The pockets are oversized; one is for the love of God; the other is to hold my love for my fellowman and all human-ity. There are three buttons on my coat, which stands for faith, hope and charity. I check on them often so none may become loose or lost. The lining is made of God’s forgive-ness, which I need so often that I want it next to me at all times. The belt is made of God’s love which encircles me every day. The material is thick enough to protect me when the storms of life come my way, but not too thick that I will not be able to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit who guides me. There are many threads in my new coat, but not one thread of doubt that God’s promises are true. Do you wonder about the color of my coat? Why, it’s the color of Jesus’ eyes that must sparkle when a lost soul accepts Him. I will need my coat all through life. When I travel through the valley of death and when I view the future, I will always wear my new coat. Now, do you know what my coat is all about? How about yours? It is the same, you know, if you are willing to accept it. And, why wouldn’t you? After all, it was designed by God and given to you by Jesus Christ. Fr. Dave

Meditations on the Stations of the Cross

by Dr. Ron Thomas

The stations of the Cross is a devotion and reflection in which we walk alongside Jesus on His way to Calvary. By prayerfully participating in this meditation we are able to clearly see through His passion and death the depths of God’s love for mankind and the price He paid for our salvation. This presentation includes powerful meditations by Dr. Ronald Thomas, Assistant Professor of Theology at Belmont Abbey College, with prayer responses by students from the college

“I am a returning Catholic who had never learned the Sta-tions. After listening to this CD a number of times, I understand and will be confident to do this devotion.” Judy, SK CA

Synod SnippetsBy Fr. Jason Signalness

Last week, I began to discuss Section VIII of Chapter 3 of the Synod Directory, which focuses on Matrimony. I conclude the discussion in this week’s column, begin-ning with a discussion of when and where weddings may take place. If both the bride and groom are Catholic, the wedding is normally to take place during Mass. If one of the cou-ple is a baptized Christian, but not a Catholic, the wed-ding should normally take place outside of Mass (156). Weddings in our diocese cannot take place on Sundays or Holy Days of Obligation, but may take place in a Sunday Mass anticipated on Saturday evening (157). Marriages between Catholics take place within church buildings and only the bishop can grant exceptions to this rule (158). As a sidebar, it is possible for a Catholic marrying a non-Catholic to have the ceremony in the non-Catholic person’s church (for example, a Lutheran church) so long as the couple fulfills the Catholic marriage prepa-ration requirements beforehand, which would include obtaining permission for such a ceremony. Statute 160 makes the important point that “only one religious marriage ceremony is permitted.” The ex-change of vows, the consent, is what makes a marriage. If two ceremonies are celebrated, it causes confusion about when the marriage took place. The best man must be a man, the maid or matron of honor must be female, and the same is true of grooms-men and bridesmaids (162). And speaking of the wed-ding party, they should be dressed modestly and in a manner which respects the sanctity of the Blessed Sac-rament, the house of God and the Sacrament of Matri-mony (163). Statute 165 explains that “modern novelties are strictly forbidden during any Catholic marriage cere-mony…,” referring to things like “unity candles, unity bowls, sand rituals and the release of butterflies or other creatures or anything of the like.” The statute also ex-plains that “wedding music must be sacred religious music, including music performed immediately before and after the ceremony.” The final article in this section discusses separation and divorce. It reminds us that “in marriage, Catho-lic parties contract a sacred obligation to maintain a common life” (171). This means husbands and wives should live together. Only for a serious reason should they live apart. But if a serious reason exists, as in the case of abuse, it may be acceptable (or even advisable) for them to live apart. However, that does not mean the marriage bond is broken in any way. Statute 172 reminds us that “dating divorced persons constitutes a proximate occasion of sin, unless freedom to marry has been proven by a Tribunal,” a Church court.

vocation view— A surprise encounter can turn our lives around. God offers us living water. Come and drink. (John 4:5-42)

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION In today’s Gospel Read-ing from John, we hear the story of the Sa-maritan woman whom Jesus confronts at the well. Jesus and His Apostles are traveling from Jerusalem in the south to Galilee in the north. The quickest route, although inconvenient in some ways, was through Samaria. Jesus’ followers went to the nearby village of Sychar to procure food while He sat tired and thirsty by what is called Jacob’s Well. It was about noon, the hottest part of the day, and a Sa-maritan woman came to the well to draw water. Jesus breaks three Jewish customs in His exchange with the woman. First, He spoke to a woman, something forbidden to men with strange women; second, she was a Samaritan woman, a group with whom Jews did not normally mix; third, He asked her to give Him a cup of water, which would have made Him ceremonially unclean from using her cup or jar. The woman was rightfully shocked. However, Jesus told her that He could give her “living water.” At that time some spring water was carbonated and

Reading I : Exodus 17:3-7Is the Lord in our midst or not?• In the Exodus reading, the Israelites grumble about their

experience in the desert.• Their thirst represents Israel’s real question, “Why did

God make us leave Egypt?”• Yahweh responds graciously to the needs of the people.

Reading II : Romans 5:1-2, 5-8We are at peace with God through Christ.• The wonder of God’s free gift of salvation in Jesus is

subject of the passage from Paul’s Letter to the Romans.• God responds to our need with compassion and mercy.• God’s love is poured out in our hearts through the Holy

Spirit.

Gospel : John 4:5-42Whoever drinks the water I give, will never thirst again.• In the story of the Samaritan woman, Jesus uses water as a

symbol of God’s revelation and God’s Spirit.• The exchange between Jesus and the woman causes

conversion to take place.• The woman identifies Jesus several times, each time with

greater understanding. First, he was a Jewish man, then a prophet, and finally she makes a comment about the Messiah.

Continued from page 4 REFLECTIONit seemed “alive” as it bubbled up from the ground, so it was called “living water.” Jesus meant that the water He offered was alive in a different way because it could both give life and quench spiritual thirst. Although the whole situation is amazing to the woman, she is particularly struck by how much Jesus knows about her. She reports to her fellow Samaritans “He told me everything I ever did.” That is not what she found so surprising though. What truly astonished her was that in spite of that knowledge, Jesus still loved her. Jesus loves us as well, despite our many shortcomings and sins.
