THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT Morning Worship – 9:30 a. m.

March 21, 2021

“Jesus bleibet meine Freude, meines Herzens Trost und Saft. Jesus wehret allem Leide, Er ist meines Lebens Kraft,

meiner Augen Lust und Sonne, meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne; darum lass' ich Jesum nicht aus dem Herzen und Gesicht.” SDG

-- Johann Sebastian Bach, 1685 – 1750 (BWV 147, Chorale #10; perhaps better known as the original first stanza of “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.”

Literal translation: “Jesus remains my joy, my heart's comfort and essence. Jesus forbids (or prevents) all woe. He is my life's strength, my eyes' joy and sunlight, my soul's treasure and gladness.

So I will not let Jesus out of my heart and my sight.” (SDG - Soli Deo Gloria)

PRELUDE O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß (BWV 622) J.S. Bach (O Man, bewail Thy Sins So Great)

John Black, Organ What A Friend We Have in Jesus arr. Nigel Williams

Alexandra Nichols, Violin *CALL TO WORSHIP/PRAYER OF ADORATION (from Psalm 63:1-8)

O God, You are our God, earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

SO I HAVE LOOKED UPON YOU IN THE SANCTUARY, BEHOLDING YOUR POWER AND GLORY. BECAUSE YOUR LOVE IS BETTER THAN LIFE, MY LIPS WILL PRAISE YOU.

I will praise You as long as I live, and in Your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise You.

FOR YOU HAVE BEEN MY HELP, AND IN THE SHADOW OF YOUR WINGS I WILL SING FOR JOY. MY SOUL CLINGS TO YOU; YOUR RIGHT HAND UPHOLDS ME.

*HYMN He Leadeth Me: O Blessed Thought!

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (first silently, then in unison):

WE COME BEFORE THEE, GRACIOUS GOD, IN HUMBLE CONFESSION AND REPENTANCE, TRUSTING THE HOLY MERITS OF THY SON OUR SAVIOR, FOR WE ARE UNDONE BY SIN. CLEANSED AND CLOTHED IN HIM, MAKE US CONTENT THIS DAY IN THY SERVICE. LET US DO NOTHING, SAY NOTHING, DESIRE NOTHING, WHICH IS CONTRARY TO THY WILL. GIVE US THANKFUL SPIRITS AND HEARTS FULL OF PRAISE FOR ALL THAT THOU HAST GIVEN US, AND FOR ALL, IN THY WISDOM, THOU HAST WITHHELD FROM US, AMEN.

A PRAYER OF ASHTON OXENDEN, BISHOP OF MONTREAL, 1808-1892

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON (unison) Jeremiah 31:31-34 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the

house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which

they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. And no longer shall each man teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’

for they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

“In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen.” *GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

World without end. Amen, amen. SPECIAL MUSIC Amazing Love (You Are My King) Chris Tomlin

Numbers 13:1-3, 23-33

The LORD said to Moses, “Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders.” So at the Lord’s command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders of the Israelites.

*** They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan.” Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great height. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

John 12:20-33Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves Me must follow Me; and where I am, My servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves Me.” “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to Him. Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not Mine. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to Myself.” He said this to show the kind of death He was going to die.

TODAY is the fifth Sunday of our annual Lenten coin drive to benefit Heifer International. All funds raised through this drive enable the Sunday School to purchase domestic animals for impoverished families worldwide. The purchase of these animals will help feed families as well as generate income for them through the sale of eggs, cheese, milk, wool and other animal byproducts. Last year the pandemic restrictions discontinuing in-person worship commenced the third week of Lent, but several of you continued to direct special contributions to compensate the anticipated loss of coin income. Some brought coins to the office, others wrote checks for the value of the coins they had, and still others simply made designated donations … and through your generosity we received just about the exact amount as in 2018 (and just a bit less than the record amount received 2019). Under current protocols we will NOT have the children collecting these coins during the service of worship as in years past, but we will continue this annual appeal (which I think began seventeen years ago). You may leave your bagged coins (and/or bills) in the offering plate, bring them to the office, or designate a donation by check and send it to the church office.

TODAY-- DOLLARS!

CALLING ALL CHOIR MEMBERS: The choir will convene Palm Sunday (March 28 - next Sunday) promptly at 8:30 a.m. on/around the front steps of the church to rehearse, before joining in the 9:00 processional around the building, after which we will sing "The Palms" for the congregation. CDC and American Choral Directors Association guidelines have approved outdoor group singing, and we are excited to finally sing together in person!
