THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Morning Worship - 9:30 a. m.

September 6, 2020

Silent prayer for use in preparation for worship:

Dear Father, take this day’s life into Thine own keeping. Control all my thoughts and feelings. Direct all my energies. Instruct my mind.

Sustain my will. Take my hands and make them skillful to serve Thee. Take my feet and make them swift to do Thy bidding. Take my eyes and

keep them fixed upon Thine everlasting beauty. Take my mouth and make it eloquent in testimony to Thy love. Make this day a day of

obedience, a day of spiritual joy and peace. Make this day’s work a little part of the work of the Kingdom of my Lord Christ,

in Whose name these my prayers are said. Amen.

A prayer of John Baillie, 1886-1960

PRELUDE Morning Has Broken arr. Keith Chapman *CALL TO WORSHIP from PC(USA)’s “Lectionary Aids for Public Worship”

Be generous to one another, says the God of abundant grace. WE TRUST IN GOD, WHO IS THE GIVER OF EVERY GIFT. Be steadfast in your lives, says the God of wisdom. WE TRUST IN GOD, WHO ENDURES FOREVER.

THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU. Lift up your hearts. WE LIFT THEM UP TO THE LORD. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. IT IS RIGHT TO GIVE OUR THANKS AND PRAISE.

YOU ARE HOLY, O GOD OF MAJESTY, AND BLESSED IS JESUS CHRIST, YOUR ONLY SON, OUR LORD, WHOM YOU SENT TO BE OUR SAVIOR. THE CUP OF SUFFERING HE DRANK HAS BECOME FOR US THE CUP OF BLESSING AND SALVATION. IN HIS DEATH, HE HAS FREED US FROM DEATH’S DOMINION; IN HIS RESURRECTION, HE OPENED THE WAY TO LIFE ABUNDANT AND ETERNAL. BLESS AND SANCTIFY WITH YOUR WORD AND SPIRIT THESE YOUR OWN GIFTS OF BREAD AND WINE, THAT WE MAY RECEIVE BY FAITH CHRIST CRUCIFIED FOR US, AND SO FEED UPON HIM THAT HE MAY BE MADE ONE WITH US AND WE WITH HIM. ACCEPT THIS OUR SACRIFICE OF PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING AS A LIVING AND HOLY OFFERING OF OURSELVES, THAT OUR LIVES MAY PROCLAIM THE ONE CRUCIFIED AND RISEN, JESUS CHRIST, OUR LORD, AMEN.

The Nicene Creed

WE BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, THE FATHER ALMIGHTY, MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, AND OF ALL THINGS VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE;

AND IN ONE LORD JESUS CHRIST, THE ONLY-BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD, BEGOTTEN OF THE FATHER BEFORE ALL WORLDS, GOD OF GOD, LIGHT OF

LIGHT, VERY GOD OF VERY GOD, BEGOTTEN, NOT MADE, BEING OF ONE SUBSTANCE WITH THE FATHER; BY WHOM ALL THINGS WERE MADE; WHO FOR

US AND FOR OUR SALVATION CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN, AND WAS INCARNATE BY THE HOLY SPIRIT OF THE VIRGIN MARY, AND WAS MADE MAN; AND WAS CRUCIFIED ALSO FOR US UNDER PONTIUS PILATE. HE SUFFERED AND WAS

BURIED; AND THE THIRD DAY HE ROSE AGAIN ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES, AND ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN, AND IS SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE

FATHER. AND HE SHALL COME AGAIN WITH GLORY TO JUDGE BOTH THE LIVING AND THE DEAD, WHOSE KINGDOM SHALL HAVE NO END.

AND WE BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE LORD AND GIVER OF LIFE, WHO PROCEEDETH FROM THE FATHER AND THE SON, WHO WITH THE FATHER AND

THE SON TOGETHER IS WORSHIPED AND GLORIFIED, WHO SPOKE BY THE PROPHETS. AND WE BELIEVE ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH. WE ACKNOWLEDGE ONE BAPTISM FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS, AND WE LOOK

FOR THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD, AND THE LIFE OF THE WORLD TO COME.

Matthew 7:13-23(RSV and NIV)

“Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

“Watch out for false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will know them by their fruits.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in Your name drive out demons in Your name and perform many miracles in Your name?’ Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you evildoers.’”

Sermon Supplement, September 6, 2020 Exodus 3:1-15

(RSV and NIV)

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was burning, it was not consumed. So Moses thought, “I will turn aside and see this great sight -- why the bush is not burnt.”

When the LORD saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!”

And Moses said, “Here am I.”

Then He said, “Do not come near; put off your shoes from you feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” And He said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.

The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the affliction of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers; I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey — the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. And now the cry of the people of Israel has reached Me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring forth My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.”

Then Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”

And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought forth the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God upon this mountain.”

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ Then what shall I say to them?”

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

God also said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers -- the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob -- has sent me to you.’

“This is My name for ever, and thus I AM to be remembered throughout all generations.”

Instructions and Miscellaneous Details• We recognize the sensitive issue that some won’t attend a service without masks

being required, while others won’t attend a service if masks are required … as per the CDC Guidelines for Houses of Worship at this time, facemask use is strongly encouraged, but not mandated. We DO request all to do their best to maintain the recommended social distancing of six feet between non-family persons at all times.

• The 29Eleven room is designated as a “Masks Required” area; a 75 inch TV allows for live-stream viewing of the entire worship service.

• Roughly every other pew will be open in the sanctuary and pews will be marked off to leave a distance on either side of people from different households; ushers will be prepared to guide you in seating.

• The hymnals and pew Bibles need not be used; all worship materials are in the bulletins which you may pick up as you enter the sanctuary. Also, the worship materials are available online (gccp.org) for those who may prefer to use personal electronic devices.

• For now there will be no Passing of the Peace, nursery care, Children’s Church, or Sunday School until further notice.

• The offering plates will not be passed, but strategically placed in the narthex and by entrances for people to place tithes and offerings. Online giving is also encouraged.

• Observance of the Lord’s Supper (Communion) will continue the first Sunday of each month; prepackaged (sterile) individual cup/wafer packets will be available in the pew racks. Please refrain from touching any packet other than the one you will use.

• There will be no formal coffee hour/refreshment time until further notice. • TO HELP US WITH PLANNING, PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU PLAN TO COME TO WORSHIP.

Please go to www.gccp.org, and click on the heading subcategory on the home page “RSVP for Worship.” A form will pop up for you to fill out and submit. If you have difficulty navigating technology, just give the church a call to let us know you’re coming; leave your name, number attending, and a number we can call to confirm if necessary.

• Again, this is uncharted territory for us, and has continued much longer than originally anticipated; I trust all to be graciously understanding as we do our best to accommodate everyone, given our limitations.

September 6, 2020 WELCOME to all who are worshiping in our sanctuary today; welcome,

too, to all worshiping with us online! As done these past twenty-two weeks, the service will be archived and posted @ twenty minutes after the benediction and will be available for viewing and/or downloading for at

least one week. A special word of welcome to any and all visiting with us in person or online this morning … welcome to our fellowship!

Flowers Today are given today to the glory of God by Elaine and Jim Magyar “in loving memory of Elaine’s parents, Donald and Dorothy Stedman, who were married September 7, 1940, eighty years ago tomorrow,” and by Jeff and Joyce Devolve “in loving memory of our fathers, Frank and Russell, and in honor of all venerable folks isolated to stay safe.”

FROM THE MISSION COMMITTEE: If you would like to donate gifts for hurricane relief, please designate the memo line of your check or envelope “Hurricane Relief.” Thank you for your ongoing support of your Mission Committee.

IN SEPTEMBER we plan to continue our present schedule (one worship service live and live streamed at 9:30 a.m.); an adapted schedule for the resumption of Sunday School is in the works and you will be hearing about this VERY soon. Also, we are planning a monthly Wednesday Night Hymn Sing venue (the second Wednesday) in the sanctuary (following current sanitation protocols), which we hope will be a welcome option for a small but significant segment of our congregation who do not have internet access; it will also be available via Facebook. The first one is SEPTEMBER 9, 7:00 PM!

AND FOR THE TIME WITH THE CHILDREN:
