O u r 4 0 t h A n n i v e r s a ry Ye a r H a s B e g u n We begin the 40th anniversary celebration of our parish this weekend with the theme “Stir Into Flame”. The party started at Hot August Nite on Friday, August 30th. This event is our annual thank you to the men, women, and youth who ac-tively serve in the various ministries of our parish. It is they, along with our parish staff members, who are grateful to God for giving us the opportunity to serve all parishioners in our lovely parish.

The theme “Stir into Flame” is taken from the second Letter of St. Paul to Timothy. Paul had appointed Timothy to serve as the Bishop of Ephesus and he wrote him to encourage him in his ministry (as Timothy was a young man who frequently got discouraged!). Paul writes to him:

“For this reason, I urge you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands.

For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather of power and love and self-control”

(2 Timothy 1:6-7) Our theme will be used throughout the year as a reminder of the power and presence of the Holy Spirit here from the beginning of our parish in 1980, how the Holy Spirit has lived and lives now in our parish life, and how the Holy Spirit will direct us in the years to come. A number of opportunities will be offered in the coming months for “stirring into flame” the virtues of faith, hope and love as we continue our journey to form loving disciples of Jesus Christ who make a difference. (Parish Mission Statement) The final event of our 40th anniversary will be Mass celebrated by Bishop Vann on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at 11am. May the Lord bless this time of gratitude and new hopes for St. Tim-othy Parish!

T h e P r o m i s e o f S t . T i m o t h y ’ s C h u r c h We had no building but we had land and a promise. The excitement of being involved in a Church from the ground up drew us in. I was a dreamer and I knew St. Timothy’s had the potential to be a great church. So we came with friends and neighbors to start at the beginning. Since there was no building all the religious education classes took place in parishioners’ homes. Phil and I, along with several other couples volunteered and organized our HS youth into small faith formation groups. We started with maybe 30 youth. We met in

several homes of which ours was one. Every Monday night 8-10 HS students came to our home. They came to learn about what it means to be Christian and Catholic. We discussed God, the world, friends, parents, and school. Nothing special, just us and them and the power of God and Prayer. There was a connection, a meeting of the Spirit and heart. We could feel God’s presence and it trans-formed us all. Those evenings with the youth changed me. They brought me closer to God. I learned, first hand, what community and church were all about and the teens became steadfast friends and that connection remains today. Fast forward 39 years. January 2019. While living out of state my husband took ill and passed away. All I wanted to do was come back to St. Timothy’s for his funeral. Monsignor Urell graciously accept-ed my request. Friends, family, and even that youth group of yesteryear welcomed us with open arms. That connection was still there. After all these years God’s presence was there. It was beautiful. And I am forever grateful. In May 2019, I moved back to area. I am in awe of the beauty of St Timothy’s and I am thrilled to see all the activities and programs and outreach. I could have never imagined something so wonderful! But then I realize that this was not my plan but God’s Plan! His vision is so much more than I could ever dream! And His plan included me. I am ready to see what the next 10 years will bring. And the next 10 years, and the next 10. St. Timothy are you ready? And how about you? Are you excited for the next 10? Bring It On!! -Betty Foy

A R e f l e c t i o n o n t h e C l o u d o f W i t n e s s e s Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. Hebrews 12:1 A little less than a year from now, our parish will be officially celebrating the fortieth anniversary of its establishment in the Diocese of Orange. In fact, the celebration has already begun, opening with the festivities of last Friday’s “Hot August Night.” During the months ahead, we will be revisiting the history of St. Timothy’s, thanking God for giving us the gift of this faith community and honoring the men and women who have contributed to its life, its spirit and its evangelical mission to “make a difference.” We will remember the bishops, priests, deacons, lay ministers, office and maintenance staff who founded and nurtured our parish from its beginning. We will remember the architects, craftsperson's and workers who designed and built these sacred grounds, including especially our beautiful church. Of the original St. Timothy parishioners, many have moved away or fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, but some are still with us today. All old-timers have memories to share and we hope they will write these down and have them published in the Sunday bulletin. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews encouraged his flock to persevere in their faith by emulating the heroes of the Old Testament, the great “Cloud of Witnesses” who labored, suffered and died in the hope of redemption. In the same spirit, may we remember the founding fathers and mothers of our parish, God’s gift to all of us. (by Bill Kramer)
