APRIL SHOWERS BRING US CLOVERS
FSQA Certification
Food Safety and Quality Assurance is required for youth who are showing livestock at county or state fair. I wanted to thank all that were involved with the March 21st training. We had 109 youth receive certification that evening. You can print off your certificate to put in your project award binders from 4-HOnline under the member list homepage in the Member Re-ports section.
If you were unable to attend, please check when your certifica-tion expires. There will be a make up training Tuesday, June 6, 2017 in Christy 4-H Hall from 6:30-8:30. Members who are 7th through 12th graders may test out as well. Call Katelyn at the Extension Office to set up an appointment for that. One weeks notice, minimum is required.

Swine Weigh-in April 15
The Swine Weigh-in and check-in will be held Saturday, April 15 from 8:00am-10:30am at the Story County Fairgrounds. If you would like to have the swine check-in crew come to your farm, you must have 15 head minimum at the site. On farm visits will be done on the evening of April 17th (this year only because Easter is on Sunday the 16th). If 15 or more pigs will be tagged at your location, please request a volunteer to come to your site. Please communicate your request to Katelyn Blake by April 7 at [email protected] or 515-382-6551.
The maximum weight for derby pigs on April 15 is 60 pounds with no minimum. Derby hogs will be allowed one additional pound of weight for every additional day after the 15th. Therefore, derby hogs may not weigh over 62 pounds on April 17th.
*NEW THIS YEAR!* Market swine do NOT have any restriction on maximum weight at weigh
in day. NO market hogs or purebred gilts will be weighed, but all will be tagged on April 15th. ALL pigs will be tagged this year. For the Story County Fair, you may weigh in a maximum of 15
pigs for each exhibitor.
Purebred breeding gilts do NOT need to come to the weigh-in, but you may choose to bring them to the weigh in for tagging if you would like. Youth/families are responsible for identify-ing them in iowa.4honline.com on or before May 15.
State Fair Pigs do NOT need to come to the weigh-in, but you may choose to bring them to the weigh in for tagging if you would like. Pigs must be tagged with a 4-H tag that will collect a DNA sample at the same time. Families must request tags and tagger from the Extension office, tag their own pigs, and return the tagger and DNA sample envelope immediately. Families are then responsible for identifying their state fair pigs in 4-HOnline.
This year's show will be non-terminal (except for derby hogs), so county fair pigs may also go to the Iowa State Fair!
Dog Project Meeting May 16

Animal ID Entry 4-HOnline Help Sheet Page 7
4-H GROWS LEADERS Learn more about how we’re empowering young people in your community with skills to lead for a lifetime. Visit extension.iastate.edu/4h
Log in to 4HOnline:
Open a web browser and type in: https://iowa.4honline.com Log into Family Account. Continue to Family Page.
Note that in some species, certain selections will activate extra entry fields [Example: selecting Registered will in some
cases show a Breed drop down box.]
Read the information at the top of each screen, particularly if you are considering exhibiting at the state fair. Some
fields that are NOT required (bold) are actually necessary for state fair animals. For each animal entered, enter all the
information requested and click the save button. All fields in bold are required.
NOTICE that you have options to print the information that you entered on screen.
If you WISH to print the information on screen, you have two options:
The Member List screen includes all of your family members enrolled in 4H: members, leaders, volunteers.
Click “Edit” to the right of the member listed to go to that member’s Personal Information Screen.
Locate and click on the Animals/Livestock link in the upper left.
There is a drop-down box and a list of any animals that have already been entered (there may not be any yet). Select the animal type that you want to enter and click the add button below the drop-down box.
1. Print Animal Information – This option is located at the top of each individual animal screen, and
prints a paper copy of the information that is on the screen for that specific animal. If you want
one for each animal, you have to open each animal’s info screen and print the form for each. This
is the equivalent of the old paper ID forms, but in Iowa 4-H shows, we will always use the online
data, not any paper, as identification.
2. Animal Exports (to Excel) – Option is located on the Animal List screen, and returns all information
in an Excel spreadsheet, one line per animal. Each animal type uses different fields, so if you have
identified dogs and horses and llamas, you’ll export twice. This is for family info only—will not be
accepted anywhere as a valid identification because it’s editable.
REMINDERS: *Families are not able to enter information for any weighed-in animals (mkt. beef, sheep, meat goats
& swine). Those animals are entered by county staff. Youth must go into 4-HOnline and verify the
information is correctly entered by May 15th.
*All animal ID’s must be submitted no later than May 15th, 11:59 p.m.
