“Diverse, surprising, and casually entrancing. Words like ‘eclectic’ and ‘beyond category’ spring to mind in trying to describe how he’s taken elements of rhythm and blues, jazz, folk, rock, and even hip-hop, and blended them together seamlessly.”

Rez Abbasi QuartetBorn on the Indian sub-continent, Rez Abbasi moved to Southern California at the age of four. He studied at the University of Southern California and the Manhattan School of Music in jazz and classical music. Rez also made a pilgrimage to India where he studied with master percussionist, Ustad Alla Rakha. He is a vivid synthesis of all the above stated influences and genres.

Making New York home for the past 15 years, Abbasi is considered by many to be one of the foremost modern jazz guitar players on today’s scene. He has developed a unique sound both as a composer and an instrumentalist and has honed his skills with performances through out the world. He has performed and recorded with many greats including Grammy winner Ruth Brown, Peter Erskine, Kenny Werner, Barre Phillips, Tim Hagans, Marc Johnson, Billy Hart, Marvin ‘Smitty’ Smith, Gary Thomas, Rick Margitza, D.D. Jackson, Dave Douglas, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Tony Malaby, Pandit Ronu Majumdar, Pandit Kadri Gopalnath, Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Greg Osby and a host of others.

Among Rez’s other creative projects is

his long-standing association with bassist David Phillips, drummer Tony Moreno and alto saxophonist John O’Gallagher in the highly acclaimed, collective ensemble, “Freedance”. Rez is also musical director and producer for Indian/Canadian Juno winning vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia’s ensemble. He also plays an integral role in Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Indo-Pak Trio, Dakshani Ensemble, Dave Pietro’s Quintet and Sunny Jain’s Collective.

With five albums of original compositions under his belt, Abbasi continues to garner new groups of musicians to help his musical vision come to life. His 2005 recording “Snake Charmer” has created a stir in the music world partly due to his organic, original approach in blending two complex musical genres together, namely jazz and Indian music. 20th Century Guitar reviewed the CD as, “One of the best examples yet of how

to merge Indian music with jazz...Snake Charmer really breaks new ground.”

Abbasi’s most recent recording “Bazaar”, released in 2006 on the prestigious Zoho Music label, continues the group’s journey through uncharted territory and achieves results unparalleled in today’s jazz/world music scene. Rez makes wise use of his fellow player’s talents to create a larger sphere of sound. Besides Gary Versace on organ and Dan Weiss on drums and tabla, Kiran Ahluwalia returns as a central member of the group. In her own group, Ahluwalia focuses on the Indian genres of ghazal and Punjabi folk music. On “Bazaar”, however, the group stretches way out.

Abbasi says, “To create a world-based music steeped in jazz is my goal. In this way, I’m following in the footsteps of some of the greatest jazz musicians. Coltrane, Ellington and Gillespie all immersed themselves into music from around the world and then brought it back home. If I have that kind of unifying effect, I’ve succeeded.”

Dave BabcockFor over two decades, Dave Babcock has built his reputation as one of Canada’s finest saxophonists. This dynamic horn man is also known as a respected bandleader, singer and producer. His playing is steeped in the living traditions of Jazz, Blues and R&B, although he’s not limited to those styles alone. Dave has moved with the times and kept his finger on the pulse of today’s music while never forgetting his roots. He’s a career musician who’s always looking for new creative opportunities to continue his growth as an artist as exemplified by his debut solo album “Happenstance”.

Originally from Vancouver, Dave took up the saxophone and began his playing career in Edmonton. After graduating from the Grant MacEwan College music

program, he honed his skills with local acts playing a variety of Jazz, Blues, R&B and Pop music.

Since those early days, Dave has gone on to perform or record with artists like Long John Baldry, Tommy Banks, Solomon Burke, Glen Campbell, Petula Clark, The Coasters, Tom Cochrane, Albert Collins, Jack deKeyzer, Floyd Dixon, Cornell Dupree, The ESO, Amos Garrett, Crystal Gayle, Rosco Gordon, Colin James, Flaco Jimenez, Johnnie Johnson, K.D. Lang, Tom Lavin of Powder Blues, Jimmy McCracklin, Taj Mahal, Big Jay McShann, Big Miller, Geoff Muldaur, Maria Muldaur, The Platters, Doug Riley, Duke Robillard, The Rockin’ Highliners, Doug Sahm, The Temptations, Ian Tyson, Mary Wilson of The Supremes and Jimmy Witherspoon. He’s also warmed up for Willie Dixon, Dr. John, Delbert McClinton, NRBQ, The Pointer Sisters, George Thorogood and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

For over fifteen years, Dave has also led several of his own successful and critically acclaimed bands. They include soul project The Devotees, highly regarded jazz group The Jump Orchestra, tex-mex and zydeco band Fat Tuesday and retro show band The Kit Kat Club. The Jump Orchestra won an ARIA award for ‘Best Jazz Group’ in 1992.

Dave’s soulful saxophone and smooth vocals are currently being showcased in several settings. The projects he leads include The Dave Babcock Group, the instrumental smooth jazz group Audioluxe, hard swinging jazz band The Jump Orchestra and with his own high-octane blues outfit, The Nightkeepers. Dave is a long-time member of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival house band and also performs regularly with the Edmonton Jazz Orchestra.

Alexis Baro SextetAlexis Baro was born and raised in the mecca of Latin music, Havana, Cuba. Growing up in a musical family, he began playing the trumpet at a very early age, inspired by his mother and aunt who played with the national ballet and symphonic orchestras of Cuba. Alexis was classically trained and also received a teaching certification from the Amadeo Roldan music institute in Havana.

Since relocating permanently to Toronto in January of 2001, Alexis has been branching out and exploring other musical influences such as jazz, R & B, funk and calypso through his work with artists such as Evaristo Machado, Son Ache, David Rudder, Kollage, Cassava, Ruben Vazquez, Donnie Osmond and The Clash. Baro has toured extensively throughout Cuba, Canada, and Europe, performing in various festivals and events.

In 2004, Alexis was a co-winner of the National Jazz Award for best acoustic group (Kollage). In 2006, he was nominated as best jazz trumpeter and best Latin jazz artist at the National Jazz Awards. He has toured with NOJO, Canefire, The Puentes Brothers and Adonis Puentes. He has recently recorded with Hilario Duran and Paquito D’Rivera. His debut CD is entitled “Havana Banana”.

Laura Crema QuartetA native of Vancouver, vocalist Laura Crema possesses a lush, unique voice with great depth and resonance. Her influences are broad and diverse as she blends jazz with popular music and improvisation. After earning a degree in Fine and Performing Arts from Simon Fraser University, Laura continued her studies with legendary jazz vocalists Sheila Jordan, Jay Clayton, Nancy King and Kurt Elling.

Laura is an accomplished dancer, choreographer and interdisciplinary performer. She has received numerous awards and grants including an “Emergence” Canada Council Grant for her work in the interdisciplinary arts. She has performed at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival on numerous occasions and also been showcased on CBC’s “Hotair”, “After Hours”, “Coastal Grooves”, “Richardson’s Roundup”, “North by Northwest” and on CKUA.

Laura’s previous CD “Almost Blue” was released under the Maximum Jazz record label/Universal Canada and has received excellent reviews and radio airplay in Canada, the U.S., and Europe.

Her newest recording “Spring is Here” was released in the fall of 2007. The twelve songs on the CD range from Billy Strayhorn’s “A Flower is a Lovesome Thing” to the Beatles “Blackbird”. Her voice’s understated warmth recalls such 1950s vocalists as June Christy and Chris Connor. As Nate Dorward of Coda Magazine says in his January/February, 2008, review of the disc, “… she … has a knack for bringing out a tune’s emotional contours.”

Dee Daniels with Chris Andrew TrioVancouver-based vocalist Dee Daniels offers the jazz aficionado an ultimate treat - jazz served up with full-bodied silky tones that soar to the height and captures the depth of her four-octave range. Her warm presence and performance ability is evident, whether fronting combos in intimate jazz clubs, big bands, or symphony orchestras in concert halls.

Daniels’ style was born in her stepfather’s church choir in Oakland, California, honed through the R&B era and brought to full fruition during a five-year stay in Europe from 1982 to 1987. During those years, she had many

wonderful opportunities to perform with such ‘Legends of Jazz’ as Toots Thielemans, Johnny Griffin, Ed Thigpen, and Monty Alexander to name but a few.

Two other personal highlights while in Europe include having had the opportunity of singing the Blues with the late, divine Sarah Vaughan in The Netherlands, and singing Gospel with the late great Joe Williams in Germany.

Dee’s international career includes performances in eleven African countries, Australia, Colombia, Hong Kong and Japan, as well as in North America and many countries throughout Europe. She has also established herself as a jazz vocalist in demand by the classical music world. She performs her Great Ladies of Swing and The Soul of Ray: The Music of Ray Charles POPS programs with symphony orchestras across Canada and the USA.

Her most recent CD “Jazzinit” on Origin Records was picked by Geoff Chapman of Coda Magazine as one of his “Top Tens of 2007”. On the album, Dee puts a jazz twist on a variety of hits from the 1950s to the 1980s including the Otis Redding/Aretha Franklin classic “Respect”, “Can’t Hide Love” by Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder’s “Another Star”, plus tunes by the Doobie Brothers, Lionel Richie, James Taylor and Elvis Presley. It is a rich-textured marvel of fresh-polished looks at classics of yore. Her signature dramatic sense and emotional thrust are ever-present on the disc.

Dapp TheoryDapp Theory is a quintet that blends “contemporary funk, groove and hip-hop into jazz with such seamless, casual precision it’s almost freaky.” (LA Weekly) Awarded the Chamber Music America “New Works” commission in 2006 and voted “Rising Star Keyboardist” by Down

Beat Magazine in 2004, leader, Canadian-born pianist/composer, Andy Milne is one of the most respected young voices in jazz today. With Dapp Theory, Milne combines the talents of percussive poet John Moon, saxophonist Loren Stillman, bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Kenny Grohowski, collectively helping to re-draw and extend the boundaries of jazz.

Milne formed the band in 1998 as a vehicle to “tell passionate stories, promote peace and inspire collective responsibility towards uplifting the human spiritual condition.” Since then, the band has evolved and built a loyal following, in large part due to their commitment to grass-roots touring, an ideology more often associated with rock ’n’ roll bands. Dapp Theory’s style is indefinable yet highly recognizable, blending influences ranging from Joni Mitchell & KRS One to Thelonious Monk & Van Halen. Their last CD, “Y’all Just Don’t Know” (Concord Records), released in 2003 included an ambitious collaboration with folk-rock icon Bruce Cockburn. Their next release will feature all new Milne compositions which blend various instrumental textures, infectious grooves, layered with lush harmonies and poignant lyrics.

Canadian-born Andy Milne has toured and recorded with Ravi Coltrane, Ralph Alessi, Carlos Ward and Carla Cook and has collaborated with a range of artists. He moved to New York in 1991 when Steve Coleman, his teacher at the Banff Centre for the Arts, invited him to join his core unit Five Elements. Enthusiasm for the young pianist was shared by M-BASE associates Cassandra Wilson and Greg Osby, who also invited him to perform with their groups. Milne recorded 12 CDs with Coleman and remained an integral member of all of his projects until 1997. Often compared to innovators like Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner,

Milne’s original style places him among the young pianists poised to continue that legacy of inventiveness. Andy’s 2007 solo piano recording “Dreams and False Alarms” featuring originals and interpretations of 1960s-era folk and pop music received outstanding reviews. His October, 2007, solo piano performance at the Yardbird Suite was one of the highlights of our fall season.

Praised by the New York Times and National Public Radio as one of today’s truly creative voices, saxophonist Loren Stillman has been gaining recognition on the New York scene since his teens. A semifinalist in the 2002 Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition, he has performed with Charlie Haden, The Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Carla Bley, Michelle Rosewoman, and John Abercrombie. Stillman’s most recent recordings as a leader “The Brother’s Breakfast” (2006, Steeplechase) and “It Could be Anything” (2005, Fresh Sound) have received critical acclaim including a four-star review from Downbeat Magazine. Downbeat has also given him a Rising Star award.

Vocalist/percussive poet/MC John Moon uses sound and visuals to change the way people interpret what they hear. Inspired equally by Salvador Dali and Ornette Coleman, he spits rhymes of collage - half painter, half poet. He is a graduate of DC’s Duke Ellington High School for the Arts and regards the “current state of despair in the world” as his ultimate inspiration for creating beauty in the world.

At 22 years of age, bassist Chris Tordini is rapidly becoming an in-demand bassist in New York’s creative music community. He graduated from the New School University in May 2006 and soon after was asked to join Dapp Theory and play on the band’s upcoming CD. While attending school, Tordini

performed professionally with a number of his teachers, including Rory Stuart, Ari Hoenig, George Garzone, and Andy Milne. He has also performed with some of today’s most compelling musicians such as Dafnis Prieto, Mark Shim, John Ellis, and Rich Perry.

Brought up in a musical household in Miami, 24-year-old drummer, Kenny Grohowski has been performing since the age of 14. His rich musical background is demonstrated by the growing list of his collaborators including Vernon Reid, Peter Cincotti, Bobby Sanabria, Rory Stuart, Cassandra Wilson, Giovanni Hidalgo, John Benitez, and Bobby Valentin. Grohowski has been a member of bassist Lonnie Plaxico’s band since 2003 and performed at the 2007 Latin Grammy Awards with the award winning group RBD.

Michael Herring’s VertigoMichael Herring is a double-bassist, composer and arranger now living in Toronto. His focus is on jazz, although he performs in a variety of genres, including folk, reggae and performance art. He has a strong sound and musical personality, and thrives in open and improvised settings.

Michael grew up in Victoria. He moved to Toronto where he studied with Canadian jazz greats David Young and Don Thompson in the University of Toronto’s Jazz Performance Program. He attended the Jazz Workshops at the Banff Centre for the Arts in 2000 and 2003 and lived in New York in 2004. All of these opportunities led to studies with Drew Gress, Mark Helias, Dave Douglas, Kenny Werner, Joe Lovano, Joey Baron, Tony Malaby, Angelica Sanchez, Johannes Weidenmueller, James Genus, Mark Turner, Rufus Reid and Ray Brown.

Michael Herring’s Vertigo is an original jazz sextet comprising some of the

strongest voices in the next generation of Canadian jazz. The group’s initial recording “Coniferous Revenge” was released in 2006. It features eleven of Herring’s original compositions. The album has garnered critical acclaim, including being picked as one of the Top 5 Debut albums of 2006 by All About Jazz New York. The music brings to mind the classic 1960s sextet sound of Wayne Shorter and Booker Little combined with a more current mix of groove-driven, improvised elements of tight horn arrangements, ensemble colours and rhythmic buoyancy.

Besides Michael Herring, Quinsin Nachoff, William Carn, Don Scott and Nick Fraser, all from Toronto, the inclusion of David Binney adds a New York “downtown scene” tinge enabling the group to transcend standard jazz fare. A recent winner of the alto saxophone “Rising Star” category in the 2007 Downbeat Critics’ Poll, David Binney is one of the most prolific young jazz musicians on the scene today. One of his earliest groups was Lost Tribe which appeared at the Yardbird Suite in the early 1990s. Binney has recorded at least a dozen albums as a leader or co-leader. His distinctive saxophone sound and innovative compositions have been heard from basement clubs in New York to festivals around the world.

Shelley Jones QuartetA highly experienced stage and studio performer, Shelley has sung in many different genres of music but Jazz and R&B remain her first love.

The past year has been especially busy for Shelley as she has been writing, recording and performing on numerous independent musical projects. Her voice and music have also been featured regularly on the radio station Magic 99.

With two solo albums to her credit,

Shelley is about to release her third CD which has her collaborating with musician/producer Andrew Glover. Together they have co-written eleven tracks, which are a mixture of Smooth Jazz, Blues, Pop and Latin.

Darryl Meyer QuintetAfter graduating from Grant MacEwan College in 2005 with a concentration in Jazz Performance, Darryl traveled to New York City and studied with jazz great Ari Hoenig. Since his graduation Darryl has been noted for playing with Jim Brenan, Jim Head, Chris Andrew, Mike Lent, John Taylor, Juno nominated blues guitarist John Campbell and New York Voices’ Peter Eldridge and Greg Jasperse. In 2006 Darryl was featured on Andrew Glover’s double disc release “Smooth” and “Not So Smooth.”

Besides having an extensive performance history, Meyer is also a teacher and clinician. In 2005 he was an artist in residence at Saskatoon’s Sasktel International Jazz Festival and in 2006-2007 an artist in residence at the University of Alberta. In the summer of 2007 Darryl became the youngest member in the Faculty of Music at Red Deer College.

This evening’s music will showcase original compositions by one of New York City’s finest drummers, Jeff “Tain” Watts.

Doug OrganDoug Organ plays the organ! He has even done so (and sometimes piano) with lots of super people like Mike Rud, PJ Perry, Hugh Fraser and Jake Langley. Doug moonlights as a record producer, having cut discs for Ann Vriend, Don Berner, Beth Arrison, and The Uncas, and keeps busy with his groups Red Ram, The Whitsundays, Lovertine, Toque, and The Wet Secrets.

Lester Quitzau TrioIn a field where intangibles like feel and integrity count for so much, Canadian roots music artist Lester Quitzau has forged an exemplary career that has earned him great respect and appreciation by musical peers and fans alike. A mellow guy who throws down a heavy groove, this Juno Award winning singer-songwriter and guitarist started with a solid blues foundation that has now grown into an eclectic and constantly evolving musical journey. Whether coaxing languid, hypnotic sounds from his slide guitar in an intimate solo concert, performing with soulmate Mae Moore or with roots group Tri-Continental, Quitzau continues to be innovative and passionate with his music.

It’s been well over 6 years since Lester has performed in Edmonton in the trio format and on this tour, Lester will be joined by Mike Lent on bass and Sandro Dominelli on drums and percussion for an evening of original, soul soothing, roots, blues and jazz that will at times, without a doubt, rock.

Bob TildesleyBorn in Calgary, Bob Tildesley played in R & B bands there before moving north to Edmonton at age 20 where he quickly emerged as the city’s leading jazz trumpeter – and indeed one of Canada’s finest – through his work in the late 1970s with pianists Tommy Banks and Bill Emes and saxophonists Bill Jamieson and P.J. Perry, all associations that would continue into the 1990s.

An expressive soloist, particularly skilled with mutes, Tildesley showed himself to be as adept playing bebop with Perry on the LP “Session” and

the CD “Quintet” as handling blues and swing on two CDs recorded in Edmonton by the legendary Kansas City pianist Jay McShann, “Hootie’s Jumpin’ Blues” (1996, Stony Plain) and “Still Jumpin’ the Blues” (1998, Stony Plain). Tildesley has been no less willing a participant in post-bop, post-modern and “free” situations, including bands with Jamieson and work in the 1980s and 1990s with the Alberta Creative Musicians’ Association, the Alberta Jazz Repertory Orchestra and Eyvind Kang’s Slavoe Tango Ensemble.

His other recordings include LPs with Tommy Banks (“Jazz Canada Montreux 1978”) and the Regina drummer Andy Cree (“The Andy Cree Quintet”, 1989), as well as CDs with the Calgary pianist Brian Buchanan and the Edmonton saxophonist Kent Sangster. Tildesley toured the Canadian festivals circuit with Eyvind Kang in 1991, P.J. Perry in 1993 and Kent Sangster in 1998, but has otherwise had an undeservedly low profile nationally.
