OUR 2013-2014 IMPACT & JOURNEY

a message from president and ceo jill bauman and board chair scott sale, md

Dear Friends of Imagine LA:

Imagine LA thanks you for your support and we are excited to share with you our 2013-2014 impact and journey. This update includes our activities from January, 2013 to September, 2014.

PLANNING. Our journey of growth began in 2013 by looking at the spectacular results of our Family Mentorship Program and asking how to serve more families. Working with a team from the Berger Institute for Work, Family and Children at Claremont McKenna, we quantified the cost savings to society from helping a family stay housed, increasing their earned income and achieving success in school. The per family cost savings were a staggering $49,000 to $109,000 per year. These cost savings can be realized via our Family Mentorship Program, only a $10,000 investment. We also engaged our stakeholders — volunteers, families, resource partners and donors — and reviewed best practices to identify opportunities to enhance and scale up our program, operations and revenue. These efforts culminated in the creation of our 5-Year Scalability and Sustainability Plan (S&S Plan).

PEOPLE. A key strategy of the S&S Plan was to build our internal capacity. We hired key professionals to streamline and improve our program and operations, while preserving the essential relationship-building in our Family Mentorship Program. This investment has paid off: we are seeing improved family outcomes and increased volunteer satisfaction. We are encouraged to have a growing pipeline of faith community, company and organizational volunteer teams — a direct result of our new branding and outreach efforts.

PARTNERSHIPS. Our Family Referral and Resource Partners are vital to our program. Since 2013 we have added partners to refer more homeless families of veterans and survivors of domestic violence. We have also expanded our Resource Partner collaborations with health, wellness, educational, legal, job training and employment organizations to strengthen the support that we provide to our families.

FUNDING. After experiencing our first ever dip in revenue in 2013, we have come back strong. We will achieve our highest revenue to date in 2014 and are likely to hit the million-dollar mark in 2015. We credit our success to the support of recurring funders, as well as new fundraising strategies. Many of our key institutional funders have invested in our S&S Plan. Our inaugural Imagine Ball concert at the House of Blues brought in hundreds of new donors — many of whom have joined our new young professional group, Change Agents. We now offer individuals, circles of friends and corporations the unique opportunity to sponsor a family’s journey through our Family Mentorship Program.

SUCCESS. Each family/mentor team’s journey is unique and life changing for all involved. Please read on to see the change and success in the stories of families like Elizabeth’s and Kim’s.

GROWING. Our S&S Plan provides a road map for exponential growth, from 25 to 50 families in 2015, to 125 families by 2018, plus expanding our Family Mentorship Model to other cities.

We are so grateful for your continued involvement and generous support, and invite you to join us to be part of the change in 2015 and beyond.

We can imagine an end to the cycle of poverty. We just can’t imagine it without you.

Sincerely,

Jill BaumanPresident & CEO

OUR MISSION

Imagine LA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to mobilizing teams in the community to end the cycle of family homelessness and poverty. Our Family Mentorship Program matches volunteers from committed organizations to work directly with a family.

One team. One family.

Families are the new face of homelessness in Los Angeles. Kids struggle to stay in school. Parents wrestle with recovery, violence and unemployment. The cycle of chronic poverty places dreams out of reach.

IMAGINE A FAMILY

This year, Imagine LA was certified as a California Volunteer Service Enterprise, proving our ability to effectively recruit, train and manage volunteers.

IMAGINE A TEAM

Imagine LA surrounds each family in our program with a team of volunteer mentors. It could be your co-workers, your congregation or your service club that we train and guide. The mentor team helps the family escape the cycle of poverty, maintain housing and achieve self-sufficiency.

IMAGINE A CHANGE

Imagine LA works. Today, kids are excelling in school, parents are on career tracks and everyone remains in stable housing. Families are changing from surviving to thriving.

Imagine LA families and mentors work hard budgeting, studying, job hunting and tutoring. But it is not all work and no play. Imagine LA teams up with various partners throughout the year to create Family Fun

Events, which provide opportunities for bonding and often first-time experiences for the families.

When Kim left a ten-year abusive relationship, she and her children found enormous challenges. Finding a job was difficult, and the family they were staying with was evicted. “We had no money, food or home,” she said. “We slept in our car in a hospital parking lot for several days.” Eventually they found Door of Hope, a transitional shelter for families, which introduced Kim to Imagine LA. Kim learned to advocate for herself, followed a budget and went back to school. Imagine LA provided support for her children too. “The mentors gave my children something that even words cannot explain: Having people that cared, people that motivated and encouraged them.”

When she entered the Family Mentorship Program, Elizabeth had struggled with homelessness, chronic poverty and domestic violence. Soon after being matched with mentors from Holy Family Church, Elizabeth and her three children lost their small Pasadena apartment and could only find safe housing in Marina del Rey. It was a challenging transition, but the Holy Family volunteer team was there in support. Elizabeth learned how to budget, improved her parenting techniques, and was able to resolve significant dental and health issues. Elizabeth chose to go back to school, and she and the kids have all excelled in their classes. Inspired by the first team, a new team of mentors at Holy Family Church is now training to be matched with a second Imagine LA family.
