Meet The Follow The Voyage Team:

Captain Michael Campbell

Students will experience the TS Kennedy’s voyage through

Captain Campbell’s eyes as they read his frequent updates from the ship’s bridge.

Cadet Emily Casella, Blogger

3/C Emily Casella will post daily blogs written especially for students. Emily will take her followers behind the scenes aboard the TS Kennedy from the bridge to the engine room. She’ll take classes, get her hands dirty as she joins fellow cadets with the ship’s maintenance, and interview the people who keep the TS Kennedy running. Emily will even provide a glimpse into how cadets relax and have fun. Her goal is to answer every question that followers back in the classroom may have about life and learning at sea. In port, Emily will share her adventures as she experiences the fun, sun, food, and culture of Curacao, Barbados, St. Thomas, and Fort Lauderdale.

Buck, FTV’s Official Mascot

Buck is hopping in Emily’s duffle bag and climbing aboard the TS Kennedy for Sea Term 2017…and he’s bringing along his cell phone. Although Emily will try her best to keep him under control, Buck is determined to explore the ship, take selfies in some out-of-the-way places, and post them on Emily’s blog. How will Buck kick up his peg leg while in port? Stay tuned!

Nancy A. Franks, Follow The Voyage Coordinator

That’s me! It has been a pleasure hearing from all of you! I am thrilled that you will be participating in the 2017 Follow The Voyage program with your students. Get reading for an exciting learning adventure! In addition to reaching out to educators from coast to coast, I have been busy developing curriculum that will tie in with the posts by Captain Campbell and Emily. (And you too, Buck!) I retired in June after a successful and rewarding thirty-two year teaching career in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Serving as the Follow The Voyage Coordinator is the per-fect “next step” for me. I am also the proud stepmother of 3/C Andrew Franks who is majoring in Marine Engineering. You may reach me at [email protected].

The Official Read-Aloud Of Massachusetts Maritime

Academy’s 2017 Follow The Voyage Program:

Carry On, Mr. Bowditch

By Jean Lee Latham

Join with classrooms across the United States as they participate in Follow The Voyage 2017

and read Carry On, Mr. Bowditch while Marine Engineering and Marine Transportation cadets

sail on Sea Term 2017. Teachers and students will enjoy the twenty-four chapter guides

created exclusively for Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Each guide includes a list of key

vocabulary words, examples of figurative language and golden lines found in the chapter, map

skills connections, and related web sites and video links.

Review: Readers today are still fascinated by “Nat,” an eighteenth-century nautical wonder and mathematical wizard. Nathaniel

Bowditch grew up in a sailor’s world—Salem in the early days, when tall-masted ships from foreign ports crowded the wharves. But

Nat didn’t promise to have the makings of a sailor; he was too physically small. Nat may have been slight of build, but no one

guessed that he had the persistence and determination to master sea navigation in the days when men sailed only by “log, lead,

and lookout.” Nat’s long hours of study and observation, collected in his famous work, The American Practical Navigator (also

known as the “Sailors’ Bible”), stunned the sailing community and made him a New England hero.

Give Captain CAMPBELL

And The Massachusetts Maritime Academy Cadets A

SOUPer Salute!

Humanitarian relief is a part of every Sea Term for Massachusetts Maritime Academy cadets. Throughout the fall of 2015, cadets gathered donations for an orphanage and school on the small island of Ile Vache, off the coast of Haiti. At the start of Sea Term 2016, sixteen pallets filled with medical supplies, soccer equipment, diapers, and shoes, were delivered to the island by the TS Kennedy. The recipients were very grateful to Massachusetts Maritime Academy cadets. The cadets were proud to have helped the people of Haiti. During Sea Term 2017, give Captain Campbell and his the hardworking cadets aboard the TS Kennedy a SOUPer Salute. Parallel the humanitarian work of the cadets by helping families in need in your community. Collect cans of soup for a food pantry near your school.

Set A Collection Goal:

125 cans

Massachusetts Maritime Academy is celebrating its 125th birthday. Work together to collect 125 cans of soup before the TS Kennedy returns; one can for each year since the Massachusetts Maritime Academy was founded.

Get The Word Out: ● Send home the notice provided to

parents and guardians. ● Have students create posters to hang

around the school and in the community. ● Ask students to decorate a large box with blue and gold paper. Write “Give

Captain Campbell And The MMA Cadets A SOUPer Salute!” on the box.

● Invite staff members to get involved. ● Post reminders on your social

media pages. ● Contact local supermarkets and stores.

They may wish to donate some soup. ● Keep a running count. Post the number of cans collected and the number of cans of soup needed to meet the goal of 125.

● Invite local businesses to match the number of cans collected by your class.

● Engage in a friendly soup can collecting competition between another classroom or school that is participating in the 2017

Follow The Voyage program.

Find The Soup Recipient: ● Look online for the names of food pantries in your area.

● A local church, synagogue, or library may be able to help. ● Arrange a time for the soup to be picked up at your school by a representative from the food pantry or schedule a time when

you can drop off the soup.

Don’t Stop! Once you reach your goal of 125 cans, don’t stop! Keep collecting cans of soup until the TS Kennedy returns to Buzzards Bay.

Take photos of your soup collection!
