This issue begins with an article on Bael tree and its importance. This followed by the regular

feature on Bazar Samiksha which it is hoped that readers may find useful.

A new feature of the current project is to monitor prices on weekly basis for those NTFPs for

which minimum support prices have been declared by Govt. of India.

Many NTFPs reveals price variations within the year and from year to year. We are including price

trend graphs for Cassia tora from this issue.

The bael tree is a moderate sized,

slender, aromatic tree found in dry forests on

hills and plains of central and southern India,

Mayanmar Pakistan and Bangladesh. It is

cultivated throughout the country as well as in

Sri Lanka, and Philippines commonly known

as bael,bilwa, beli fruit, bael stoneapple and

woodapple. It grows upto 18-25 meter tall. Bel

is also called Siva Druma (Lord Shivas

favorite tree) is held sacred by Hindus. The

leaves being offered in prayers to Shiva and

Parvati, commonly found in wild area in

tropical forests. Large production is from

Madhya Pradesh, Chhattishgarh, Uttar

Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. It has many

grades important in the market known as

Narendra Bel- 4, Narendra Bel- 5, Narendra

Bel- 6 and Narendra Bel- 9.

It has enormous traditional values

against various disease and many bioactive

compounds have been isolated from this

plant. Its fruits leaves, bark and root are

important in medicine .Almost in all villages

people use bael pulp in squash (Sharbet) as a

cold drink in summer season. It is beneficial

for constipations and sunburns. It is also

useful in the treatment for fever, bronchitis, 1/2diabetes, diarrhea and piles. The fruit 2 to

1/43 inches in diameter, globular or ovid in

shape, colour grayish brown, outside surface

hard and nearly smooth. Rind about 1/8 inch

thick and adherent to a light red pulp, in which

are ten to fifteen cells, each containing several

woolly seeds. It has a faint aromatic odour and

mucilaginous taste.

The demand of bael pulp is high in

summer season. There are two grades

available in the market viz., Bhatti and natural

ripe .Collectors pluck bael fruit before

maturity and modifying in ripe form by used

in bhatti and boild both are available in the

market, it has also variation in the price,

processed bel powder used to make agarbatti

in industires. Whole part of bael is important,

its pulp used in many kind of edible herbal

products and wastage also used in hawan

samagri. Important markets of Madhya

Pradesh supply bel pulp to different

processing industries. Some important

markets of bael are Katni, Mandla, Betul,

Jhabua, Chhindwara , Shivpuri and Sheopur

in M.P are traded in bulk quantity.

The market information data base maintains

price information of different NTFPs. In

Fig.1 graphs of bel species market price from

the two decades in Katni and Dhamtari market

analyse that price has increased very sharply

from Rs.1400-1500 in 2011 .Due to high

demand increased in Rs. 2400-2500 in

2014.Similarly price fluctuation shows in

other market in Madhya Pradesh.
