    Jockvale Rd. BRidgeThis months discovery o barn swallow nests

    put a stop to the demolition o the old JockvaleRd. bridge over the Jock River in Barrhaven. Thebird is a threatened species under provincial lawand its nests cant be relocated between May

    1 and Aug. 31. The city and its contractor aredetermining how long the road project might bedelayed and i there wil l be extra costs. Two newbridges are replacing the old bridge as part o a$24-million road improvement project.

    StRandheRd-aRmStRong BRidgeGloucester-South Nepean Coun. Steve

    Desroches will tell you he pulled the$48-million project rom the ashes le t by thecancelled north-south LRT plan. Un ortunately,the project has taken a beating since the 2010groundbreaking. The contractor went bankrupt,the citys bonding company wont acceleratework and the completion date has been puto until September 2014. The original openingdate was in 2012. Council recently approveddirecting $1.6 million more to the project usingmoney reed up in other capital works.

    aiRpoRt pkwy. FootBRidgeResidents in the area o Hunt Club and

    McCarthy roads have waited patiently ora sa e pedestrian crossing over the AirportPkwy. The project broke ground in summer2011 and last year o cials discoveredproblems with the poured concrete,orcing a do-over. The $5-million bridge ispart o a $6.9-million project to improvetransportation and transit access in the area.The city has maintained taxpayers wontbe on the hook or any delay costs. A rmcompletion date or the bridge hasnt beenannounced.

    hazeldean Rd. BRidgeThe $4.5-million vehicular bridge over the

    Carp River opened a couple months late inOctober 2011. Even today the new gatewayor Kanata and Stittsville receives criticism orits stately design. The delay happened when

    workers discovered the deck moved more thanwhat was anticipated during construction. Thebridge was part o the $65-million wideningproject or Hazeldean Rd.

    ottawa Stadium/lRthighway FootBRidge

    The $8.8 million pedestrianbridge is being promoted as thekey to making baseball work at

    the Ottawa Stadium. The bridgewill span Hwy. 417 between thestadium and the uture LRTstop at the Via Rail station. Thebridge ootings have been builtand the rest o the constructionwill happen during the highwaywidening.

    centRal-eaSt RideauRiveR FootBRidge

    The city is currently consultingthe public on a new pedestrianbridge over the Rideau River

    between Somerset St. E. andDonald St., linking SandyHill and Overbrook. The costestimate in 2011 dollars was$7 million and was expected toincrease with infation.

    Rideau canalFootBRidge

    The proposed $17.5-millionpedestrian bridge over theRideau Canal would be built

    between Fi th Ave. and CleggSt. The 2013 budget has $2million or the design work, socouncil will need to nd therest o the money in uturebudgets. The bridge wouldhelp pedestrians accessLansdowne Park.

    kettle iSland BRidgeA $1-billion vehicular bridge

    between Ottawa and Gatineauwould pass over Kettle Island, at thehead o the Aviation Pkwy., underthe National Capital Commissionspre erred plan. Mayor Jim Watsonthinks the money would be betterserved or public transit projectsand the province recently said itwouldnt support a bridge overKettle Island. Neighbourhoods areat odds over the need or a bridgeand the location. The current studydates back to 2006.

    o-tRain FootBRidgeA $1.5 million-pedestrian

    bridge is planned in Little Italyover the O-Train track betweenHickory St. and Adeline St. Thenew bridge is expected to helppeople access amenities aroundPreston St. Several new condotowers are under development inthe area.
