DIRECTIONS
You’ve probably heard
that superbug infections
are on the rise due to
antibiotic resistance. The
Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention says that
approximately two in
100 people in the U.S.
carry methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus
(MRSA). There are many
things you can do to protect
yourself and your family’s
health from these antibiotic-
resistant invaders. Otsego
Memorial Hospital is
working hard to protect you, too. Otsego Health & Wellness sat
down with Dr. Nathan Mann, Primary Care Physician at OMH
Medical Group-Boyne Valley, to find out more about antibiotics
and their use.
WHEN TO USE ANTIBIOTICSBacteria and viruses are the two main types of germs. Most
bacteria don’t hurt you — some even help digest food. But
other bacteria cause diseases such as strep throat, urinary tract
infections, wound and skin infections, many types of pneumonia
and some ear infections. “The thing to remember with antibiotics
is they don’t only kill the bad bacteria,” says Dr. Mann. “They
can cause intestinal problems, medication interactions and side
effects, and by killing the good bacteria, can leave us susceptible
to other infections.”
Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections. Today, there are
over one hundred antibiotics, most tailored to treat a specific
kind of bacterial infection.
In contrast, viruses can’t be treated with antibiotics. Smaller
than bacteria, these tiny germs make you sick when they invade
and reproduce in healthy cells. Viruses cause many illnesses,
including colds, coughs, bronchitis, most ear infections and flu
(influenza and stomach flu). It’s hard to tell if an illness is caused
by a bacteria or virus, though, so consult your doctor.

All About Antibiotics
Squash ‘Superbug’ InfectionsTIPS FOR TAKING ANTIBIOTICS• Don’t ask for an antibiotic if your doctor says you don’t need it.
If you have a viral infection, avoid antibiotics. They won’t help
and could make you worse.
• Take your medicine as prescribed. Ask your doctor or
pharmacist what to do if you miss a dose.
• Finish taking your medicine even if you feel better (take all the
doses to kill all the bacteria).
• Don’t take old medications or someone else’s medicine.
According to Dr. Mann, having a primary care provider allows
the patient to have a conversation with their healthcare provider
regarding their illness, and make the best decisions for treatment
going forward.
PROTECT YOURSELF• Always handle, prepare, store, cook and refrigerate food
correctly and keep hands, utensils and food preparation areas
clean to avoid foodborne illness.
• Don’t let raw meat, poultry and fish — or their juices — come
into contact with other foods.
• Stay home from work and keep your child home from school
when sick.
• Get vaccinated. Ask your doctor which immunizations you and
your family should receive.
• Wash your hands thoroughly using soap and water for 10 to
30 seconds or an alcohol-based hand rub if soap and water
aren’t available.
WE CAN HELPDo you have a primary care physician? If not, OMH can help.
Dr. Mann is accepting new patients and families, as well as
many other OMH providers. To schedule your appointment,
please call (989) 731-7700. To review the long list of accepted
insurances at OMH and the OMH Medical Group, please visit

SELF-HELP FOR COLDSYour immune system might fight off some viruses
before they make you sick, but sometimes you just
have to let them run their course. If you or a family
member has a cold, you can get relief by:
• Drinking plenty of fluids.
• Resting.
• Using a cool mist vaporizer or humidifier.
• Spraying saline nose solution to soothe dry
nasal passages.
• Taking a fever-reducing medicine, when needed.
• Drinking warm water with lemon and honey; eating
ice chips; or using a sore throat spray or lozenges
(don’t give lozenges to young children due to
choking hazards).
• Contact your doctor if symptoms get worse or last
a long time.

When the long nights of winter set in and the weather turns
cold, even the most motivated exercisers can be tempted to
stay inside and hibernate. The winter months are brutal for
many people’s fitness routines, but there are some great
benefits to staying active during this time.
Working out in the winter can give you more energy
and improve your overall mood. Some research
even suggests that moderate exercise could give
your immune system a boost and keep you from
catching every cold virus you encounter. With
some simple adjustments, you can put exercise
back into your winter routine. Here are five tips
to get started:
Recruit a workout buddy. Finding a friend to
regularly exercise with can help you get those
running shoes back on even when you don’t
want to. Knowing someone is expecting you to
work out with them at a certain time will help
you stay motivated.
Get the right winter gear. If you prefer to
exercise outside rather than at home or the gym,
the right winter gear will help you to do so even
when temperatures drop. Dress in layers that you
can remove as you start to sweat, and avoid cotton,
which stays wet next to your skin. A layer of fleece or
wool topped by a waterproof layer helps to insulate.
When it’s cold, you should be sure to protect your head,
hands, feet and ears from frostbite with a hat, gloves and
extra socks.
Find a fun winter activity. Get excited for winter weather by
taking up an exercise hobby that you can only do in the winter.
Ice skating, curling, broomball, snowshoeing and skiing (if there’s
snow!) are all excellent winter sports to try.
Set a goal. Don’t use the winter months as time off, use them as time
to prepare or reach a goal. Want to fit into a great new swimsuit next
summer? Set a new personal record in your upcoming half marathon? Use the
winter months to get you there.
Consider moving your workout indoors. Try a new activity that you can do
indoors, such as fencing, dancing, yoga or swimming. If you prefer staying home, this
is the perfect time to up your reps for body weight exercises (push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups)
you can do at home.
Get moving this season with these five ways to winter-proof your workout.

Anterior Approach
Revolutionizing Total Hip ReplacementsThe human anatomy has not changed, but the instruments
used by physicians have, and it is this evolution of technology
and training that is changing how patients experience their
hip replacements. Residents of Gaylord and the surrounding
communities are benefiting from these advancements and the
surgeons who use them.
In July 2015, Otsego Memorial Hospital welcomed
orthopedic surgeon, Ryan Shephard, DO. Dr. Shephard
completed his residency at McLaren-Macomb Hospital in
Mount Clemens, Michigan, and utilizes the anterior approach
to total hip replacements.
“Essentially, the anterior approach has revolutionized the hip
replacement,” said Dr. Shephard. “Surgical technology has
evolved, creating instruments that allow the surgeon to move
around the muscle instead of cutting through it.”
The procedure calls for the surgeon to enter through the front
(anterior) of the hip, instead of the back (posterior) or the side
(lateral) approach.
INCREASED STABILITY, LOWER DISLOCATION RATEAccording to Dr. Shephard, because the surgery is performed
without cutting through the muscle, the patient can expect
increased stability with a lower dislocation rate. This is
a significant improvement when compared to older hip
replacement procedures. The improved stability also leads to
less activity limitations and lifelong restrictions.
“Patients who actively participate in high-level, non-impact
sports, such as skiing or tennis, should not expect to have the
same lifelong restrictions imposed on them as can be expected
with the posterior or lateral approaches,” said Dr. Shephard.
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY, GREATER ACCURACYThe advanced technology includes more than simply newer
instruments. It incorporates a surgical table that works in
conjunction with an X-ray component, allowing for the highest
level of accuracy when replacing the affected joint. OMH
purchased the Hana Orthopedic Table in the spring of 2015
and is one of only two facilities in northern Michigan with the
equipment and expertise to offer the anterior hip replacement.
Dr. Ryan Shephard shows how an anterior approach to a hip replacement works.

Anterior Approach
Revolutionizing Total Hip Replacements
Talent, training and technology are changing hip replacement
surgery, and patients cannot speak more highly of the benefits.
Although everyone will recover at their own pace, patients of
the anterior approach frequently experience a faster recovery as
their muscle tissue has not been cut.
One of Dr. Shephard’s most recent hip procedures performed
at OMH was completed on 70-year-old Nancy who was thrilled
with the results — especially as she is still in the workforce.
“My husband and I were amazed,” said Nancy. “Even the
nurses and physical therapists were surprised that I was
walking within 30 minutes of waking up from the procedure.
The greatest pain I experienced was the discomfort in my throat
from the breathing tube.”

anterior approach or to
