Unit 2 – lesson 1
Othniel
Big Idea: Obey God.
Key verse: Jeremiah 7:23b – “Obey me. Then I will be your God. And you will be
my people. Live the way I command you to live. Then things will go well with you.”
Bible Passage: Judges 2:1-3:11
Thoughts for leaders Obedience to God is often taught to be black and white, yet lived in only shades of grey.
In this lesson, two things are being taught: one, that God’s commands make sense (He’s
not asking you to do things just to amuse Himself) and two, that God’s commands are
to be obeyed completely – even if we’re not sure why.
It may be worth asking yourself: do I do this? Or am I also, like the Israelites in the book
of Judges, happy enough with “mostly” following God. After all, that’s already better
than most people who call themselves Christians, right? Yet the half-way obedience
the Israelites showed at the height of their victory, resulted in disaster for generations
after! Because they failed to drive people out of the land that God had given them,
those people and their descendants continually drew Israelites away from worshipping
the True God and into the seduction of worshipping false gods. We may not always see
the “why” of what God is asking of us, but we can trust Him that obedience is always for
the ultimate best!

Drill Sergeant: Attention!
I have been sent by top officials to take over command of this post. Reports have come
to my attention that this post is completely lacking in discipline and it’s time to whip
you kids into shape! From now on, you will do as I say when I say it and how I say it! I
have new rules, and they will be obeyed! From now on, anyone who breaks any one of
my rules will be thrown into the dungeons immediately. Is that understood? I said IS
THAT UNDERSTOOD?
Wait for response.
Drill Sergeant: Alright! Now, then, let’s begin with the new rules.
Unrolls a long scroll.
Drill Sergeant: Ahem. Number One. No person shall be found biting their own elbow.
Looks up at the kids.
Drill Sergeant: Is that understood? Excellent.
Invariably some of the kids – probably boys – will begin trying to bite their own elbows. Let
them try. It’s not possible. The sergeant can pretend to read the scroll and not notice their
attempts.
Drill Sergeant: Number Two. No person unable to draw a breath shall be allowed to
participate in any games or activities.
Yes, expect a room full of breath-holders. It will pass!
Drill Sergeant: Number three: No person shall be found standing on their head for any
period longer than three hours.
Looks up from the scroll.
Drill Sergeant: And I will notice! Do not think you can get away with that!

Attention Grabber continued…
Drill sergeant reads from his scroll again
Drill Sergeant: Number four: In the case of space alien visitation, no galatic war shall
be started by any person or persons at 10:10 Kids.
Looks up again
Drill Sergeant: So. No starting wars with aliens. Got it?
Resumes reading from scroll.
Drill Sergeant: Number five: Any persons with more than six arms shall report
immediately to their supervising commander for explanation and possible dismissal.
That will be all.
Dismissed!
Sergeant clicks heels together and marches smartly out of the room.
Optional ending:
Leader: Wow! That drill sergeant really takes those new rules seriously! What do you
think? Do you think we can follow his rules? Will it be really hard to remember to obey
them? I thought they were kind of silly, actually. I mean, who goes around biting their
own elbows? I don’t think I’ll have a hard time obeying those rules!
You know, some people think God makes up strange and useless rules, too. They think
He’s like today’s drill sergeant. Our lesson today reminds us that God’s rules are for our
best, and if we disobey God, we usually end up hurting ourselves! God makes rules to
help us, not to annoy us, and the rules He gives us make sense, even if we don’t see it at
the moment. We’re going to learn what happened to a people group called the
Israelites who thought they knew better than God.

I bet everyone here can think of a rule they don’t like! But has there ever been a rule
you didn’t like but that you knew was for your own good?
One rule I have heard, is not to take candy from strangers. I might not like that rule
because what if someone offers me my absolute favourite candy? Then I would want to
disobey! But do you know why that rule was made? That’s right – to keep me safe. So
even if I don’t like that rule, I know it’s meant to keep me safe.
Some people say that God has too many rules and they feel like He is being like a really
mean drill sergeant by telling us what to do! ButGod’s rules are for our own good, and
He helps us to obey them! When we disobey God, He knows that bad things often
happen, and so to protect us, He asks us to obey Him. Let’s find out what He meant, by
looking at the story of a country called Israel.
Early in the Bible days, there was a country of people called Israelites. They were very
special to God – in fact, He chose them to be the people He was going to live with. He
rescued those people from slavery, found them a place to live, and asked that in return,
they worshipped Him and followed the laws He gave them.
There were people, called Canaanites, living in the country God wanted to give to the
Israelites, and God did not like the way they were living. They liked hurting people,
they hated God and they were always getting into trouble, so God told the Israelites
when they moved there, they had to get the Canaanites to leave. God helped Israel win
many battles against the Canaanites until finally, the whole country belonged to Israel!
They were so excited to finally have a country of their own! In fact, they were so excited
that they forgot to get the rest of the Canaanites out of the country! They made some
of them into slaves because it made them feel important to have their own slaves. They
became friends with some of them. They had business partnerships with some of
them. The Israelites figured God wouldn’t mind, since most of the Canaanites were
gone, at least.
This made God very sad, because He knew what would happen if those people stayed.
He knew the Canaanites would tell His people lies about God, and that His people
would start listening to their advice and doing bad things. He reminded His people that
He had asked that they kick all the Canaanites out of their country, not just some of
them, and all of Israel cried and said they were sorry… but they still let the people stay
there.

Teaching Time continued…
What happened to Israel? Did God get so angry that He hit them all with lightening
bolts? Do you think God made the Canaanites leave Himself?
You know what He did? Nothing. He let everybody live, but just like He knew would
happen, eventually the Canaanites got stronger, and the Israelites started listening to
them and believing what they said, and soon all of Israel forgot about God. It didn`t
take long before the Canaanites made the Israelites their slaves, and took over their
special country!
It makes God sad when we disobey, not because He is such a mean God, but because
He loves us so much, He wants the best for us. When we disobey, we don’t get to live in
God’s best way. When the Israelites disobeyed, they thought it was no big deal, but
God knew they would become slaves again if they didn’t make the Canaanites leave
their country. He wanted His people to live in their own country as free people, and
instead they became slaves and lost their land all because they didn’t obey God.
When we obey God, God promises that means we will receive His blessings. When we
disobey, He knows we will get hurt, and He doesn’t want that. Is there anything we can
do when we disobey? Is it too late to start obeying?
God says it’s never too late to do the right thing! In fact, even after the Israelites
became slaves to the Canaanites, when they remembered God and all He had done for
them, the Bible says they cried out to God to save them – and He did! He sent a hero
named Othniel to fight against the Canaanites and free the Israelites to live in their
country again as free people! Everyone was so thankful, and as long as Othniel was
alive, the whole country was obedient to God again.
Just like Israel, when we realize what we did was wrong, we can call out to God and ask
for His help. We sometimes still have to deal with the results of disobeying God, but He
rescues us and helps us live the way He wants us to in the future.
God is not a drill sergeant. He is not trying to make our lives miserable with His rules.
He just knows the best way for us to live and be really joyful, not just have pretend
happiness. So even when His rules seem hard, we can trust Him that He loves us and
wants the best for us, no matter what!

Prayer Journals
Leader: In our Bible story today, the Israelites didn’t completely obey one of God’s
commands. What was that command? (to not let the Canaanites live in their land.)
Leader: They didn’t see it as a big deal, because they figured they already had what
they wanted: a country of their own, so how could it hurt? But what happened to them
when they didn’t obey God completely? (the Canaanites led them away from God, and
they ended up becoming their slaves).
Sometimes we don’t understand what a rule is for. This might make us think we don’t
need to obey it. Can you think of some rules that people break all the time? (walking
only at crosswalks, not talking on cell phones in vehicles, swearing at school, etc.)
Discussion questions:
- Have you ever had a rule that you thought was unfair? Do you think there might
have been a reason behind it?
- Have you ever disobeyed a rule, then later wished you could go back and do it
over again differently? What happened?
Leader: God’s rules are different than people’s rules because He knows what will
happen in the end, and because He always wants what’s best for us. Even if we don’t
understand a rule, or think it doesn’t apply to us, obeying God is always the best choice!
Take time to go through prayer journals. Pray for the requests that are there, and praise
God for answered prayers! Remember to ask for God’s help to be obedient to HIS
commands, even when we don’t understand why.

Jeremiah 7:23b – “Live the way I command you to live. Then things will go well with
you.”
Have the kids line up against one wall (or behind a marked line) in a room. As they walk
to the other side, they must say one word of the memory verse for every step they take.
The object of the game is to get the entire team to touch the wall (or cross the line) on
the other side. You may make it a competition between two teams by the time you get
to steps 4 & 5.
You may need to repeat steps (especially initial ones) to help kids get the hang of the
verse.
1st time through – everyone walks together, reciting the verse out loud as they walk
2nd time through – everyone walks together, but takes turns saying the next word in the
verse as they walk. They each take a step for every correct word.
3rd time through – Have each kid take turns saying the next word in the verse, but they
may only take a step on their turn to say a word, and only if they get it correct (they do
not move if they forget or say a wrong word). This round, they may ask for help or
hints.
4th time through – same as 3rd time, without hints
5th time through (only if your group is confident) – take turns saying the next word in
the verse. If someone gets a word wrong, they have to return to the beginning of the
line and start again.

The Queen’s Desire
The object of the game “Queen’s Desire” is to be the first team to receive twelve
tokens. You do this by giving the Queen what she desires, but she is a fickle queen!
This is a game of creativity, so you don’t need to give the queen exactly what she
desires, you just have to convince her she likes it! (e.g. You may find a Kleenex, rip a
hole in it and find a marker to colour a part of it red and smooth talk her into believing
it’s a beautiful, red lace handkerchief).
Appoint one leader to play the part of the queen. If you have a large group she may
need knights or ladies-in-waiting to assist her. Divide the group up into teams of 4-8
people. (One volunteer per team). Teams come, one at a time and draw a card from
the stack. If they accept the challenge, they assemble their item and go to the Queen
with their challenge card to receive their token. If the Queen accepts their offering, she
will collect the challenge card and give the team their tokens. The first team to collect
twelve tokens wins. You may try to sweet talk the Queen into extra tokens for extra
effort, but be warned that while she may occasionally do this, she may take a token
back if she feels like it, too!
If you choose NOT to complete the challenge on the card, you may leave it FACE UP on
the challenge table, and draw a second card. You MUST accept one of the two
challenges. Be warned that the challenge your team discarded is now available for
other teams to attempt as a bonus card.
The next team then draws a card. They may also choose to discard their card face up on
the challenge table and draw a second card, but they must choose one of those two
cards. IN ADDITION, they may choose from any of the previous challenges face up on
the table to complete as well.
Some challenges require the participation of more than one team. In this case, both
teams earn that number of tokens.
